Fuel logging....OCD?
« on: August 10, 2012, 05:20:31 PM »
Do I have OCD?

For almost all cars I've ever owned, and the 3 bikes I've had, including my 2010 ST, I've logged every KM and every litre put into it.

Here's a link to Google Docs where I have it for the ST - click the tabs across the bottom for charts.  I'm averaging around 5.5 litres/100km at the moment.... and holding.

Rob's Google Docs Fuel Log

My riding habbits are all city, dodging Perth peak-hour in the morning, but catching it in the arvo. One up and not much of a load (except me!).

Does anyone have this habbit also? My wife thinks I'm nuts, but most probably would anyway.

How does that work out if you don't fill your tank every fill?

I have one that uses Office Excell and it allows me to input other expenses as well and so far for this year I'm spending about 20 cents/kilometre

6.34L/100kms or about 15.77kms/litre. (a lot of trailer use) fuel cost works out to about 9 cents/km

Mine is a lot simpler

Just use plastic or cash when gauge reads to low,   :p

I use the Tipsy method.  I keep an idea in my head of wheter fuel usgae is around expected, and keep track of tyre changes and costs and other maintenance as I go along.  All in an old accounts book.

started useing "fuelLog" on my galaxy nexus (android) when on holidays. it is good to know how much its costing as the price of fuel and accomadation these days i have to plan to a fine point sometimes. also keeps records of repairs, tyres and other farkles

on our recent trip eit trailer 5.87lts/100klm  with trailer two up at highway speed. slightly higher in play mode

makes it easier to plan finances for next trips

Already know what happens.. the further I travel the less fuel remains in the tank, therefore requiring intimitant stopping for more go go juice   :p :p :p

I'm with the Excel fraternity.  One page for daily travel, one for fuel and one for maintenance/rego/insurance costs.
The scarey part is when you add up what you spend, especially if your taste in farkles extends to Zumo 660s, tank bras, cruise controls, Starcoms etc etc.  That's before you figure in petrol at $1.40 plus and tyres at $200+ each.   :eek

We don't do it to save money.
It's a bit like the definition of a recreational boat- a hole in the water to pour money into.   :thumbs

shhhhh.... don't tell my financial secretary about the total-cost-of-ownership!

It's nice to know that I'm not the only one with OCD though.

I suppose the argument here is whether you actually want to know how much it costs to run the bike (or a car for that matter), or whether you simply accept whatever it costs as a necessary part of living and being able to get from one place to another. Either side of the discussion is equally valid, but from my point of view I prefer to know just how big of a black hole it actually is. Even saying that I don't record things like maintenance or insurance or rego, simply because I take the view that they are requirements that will happen regardless; however knowing if your fuel consumption dramatically changes over a short period of time could well turn out to be very useful information.

Just my take on the discussion.
Cheers,
Paul

But while you were away, all those investments you have were making even more money to replace what you spent!     ::)
