Well, bike all set for a bit of a road trip, new rubber on Saturday but thought I would check underneath as I had a suspicion there may have been some oil leaking. The smoke coming from near my right foot gave it away

Dropped it in to Honda this morning and it would appear that at least the O ring or the seal in the universal joint may have gone (or both).

One of the parts is readily available but the other one needs to come from Japan, soooo a bit of a wait for it

again!! There goes my holiday run, was to be around 7000Km and hopefully six days, bugger.

Oh well back to the drawing board to plan for the next one

How many km's has your STead on the clock, please.

That's bad timing, or maybe good if it failed far, far away. Hopefully the cost of repairs will be less than the cost of the ride

Your dead right Pete, there were a couple of spots I would have been in the middle of nowhere.

Saaz, the guy that does all the bookings for the bikes said to me that there were quiet a few km's on the bike and that a 5 dollar seal wasn't to bad for so many miles, then I reminded him of the minimum four hours labour costs to pull the rear end out to put the new ones in....he went quiet then. The cost of the ride would have been fuel and food and a bit of accommodation in van parks, I think you are right though the repairs should be cheaper than the ride.

Abe, there are around 120,000 k's on the clock and the mechanic has not heard of it happening.

all in all, I am glad it happened, well at least picked up at home, lots of hassles as we all know when things go wrong out on the road.

I will let you all know how it all goes

Was it leaking so badly that you wouldn't have been able to keep the oil up to it, say one litre every 500 kays? Slow drip or steady trickle?

Just wondering to what extent such a leak would have seen you hopelessly stuck.

Anything that drops oil onto the the exhaust is of a concern for me. I cleaned the area where I thought it was coming from and went for a run around the block only to find it all back again and smoking off the exhaust. The mechanic advised that there was a fair bit behind the rubber gasket (don't know what a fair bit is exactly).

May have been able to ride for days on end without any problems just topping up the oil and trying to ignore the burning oil on the exhaust. Knowing there was an issue and adding something else to watch whilst riding just adds to the ride when it is not needed. My understanding of my fatigue management would suggest that this is an issue that is better off fixed before heading out. Prior to heading out on any of my rides I need to know that my bike is in its best condition so as I can safely complete the ride, it is one of those mind things that helps me :-)

Wise words TJ, no point riding distracted if you don't have to. At least you've still got the plan and the roads will be there when you find some more time. Hope the leak gets sorted soon.

If the leak is up the front, it is likely to be engine oil getting into the shaft. An oil fire would not be nice.

No matter how disapointed I felt about it, I would never venture out on the bike knowing that something wasn't right.

It would be constantly on my mind and totally ruin the ride. A minor oil leak can very quickly turn into a major one, and you can bet it's going to happen at the most inappropiate time.

A wise move my friend, the ride will be there for you another time!

I've inadvertently given the impression I would have gone riding with it.

I wrote the question regarding the leak rate in the context of posts regarding being stuck a long way from help.
Hence, would it have been possible to limp home aided by oil top-ups?
Apparently, maybe. Also, in an "emergency", it may have been possible to rig a deflector to keep the dripping oil off the exhaust pipe.

Bad luck there TJ - knowing how meticulously good condition you keep your 'sporting gear' in, - good call.

I can probably 'pillion' you for 850kms if the withdrawal symptoms get too bad.

Dink TJ down here Diesel. I need someone to run Little Mango's shiny new motor in. 1000km at 60-65kph should do the trick. Just a day ride. What do you reckon TJ?

As with any FarRide/IBA ride , pulling the pin is harder than trying to keep on going. Does not make it any easier just sitting at home though...been there done that and very frustrating.

Still have that dvd if you want to borrow it TJ. Good call on the ride nothing worse than worrying if its going to make it. Have always worried big time about leaking oil on a bike especially anywhere near rear tyre.
