Hi folks
I went for an 800km ride into the Riverland on the weekend and about halfway through I noticed the speedo needle resting at zero (my GPS indicated 110ish). Not long after, the FI light came on. The needle would start working again but the light remained on. I stopped, let it idle in neutral and put the stand down. The FI light blinked a long blink and then a short blink - Code 11 or Vehicle Speed Sensor. I had no other issues and the bike rode fine (although I reckon the fuel economy got worse, I was riding at about 4.9 l/100km and it was in the mid 6's or more whenever the FI light came on). With stopping and starting things would reset themselves but soon the needle would drop and then the light would come on a few minutes later.
Before I start peeling tupperware away and go searching for the elusive problem, has anyone else had a similar experience. The only other thing which may be part of the problem is the last time I had my fork seals done I reckon they used rotary hoe gearbox oil in the forks as they are rock hard and I get bad jarring hitting a small pothole. I was wondering whether that has shaken something loose.

Does not sound good.  Definitely interested in the cause when the mechanism ally minded see your issue

Dodgy speed semsor sounds like the culprit, I believe its easily replaced without too much drama.

I had the same a couple of years ago, new speed sensor fixed it.  Just let mechanic know it is at the gearbox as mine ordered an abs sensor instead!  Easy enough to replace.

If it's the speed sensor then

Item 9 Speed sensor part number  37700-MCS-003

Item 16 Might need a new O ring to go with it 91302-MAL-601

Thanks for the heads up Alan. Blue City Motorcycles at Mt Gambier has the sensor for Aus$204, it makes Partzillas US$76 + postage look very good

I have bought parts from Partzilla twice since July last year and so far GST has not been added. All I've paid is the postage quoted. Even if you add the 10% GST you're still in front compared to local.

US Cost to the door is $US96.06 or $AUD134.64 at todays rates.

I'll ask MotoAdelaide because I prefer to support Aussie businesses but sadly I can't afford to be a philanthropist this close to retirement. I suspect it will be Partzilla who get my money.

Sorry, i should have updated this.
I ended up purchasing the VSS through Partzilla and had it delivered after around 10 days and saved a bit over $50.
Using the info from the US ST site I decided to do the job myself. It required the removal of the right hand cowl. The tricky bit was made easier by tying string to the old part at the electrical connector for use in bringing the new connector up to where it plugs in. The only other tricky part is screwing the new sensor bolts (2) in and not cross threading them as you are working by feel. The upshot is, if i can instal a vss, pretty much anyone can. It was a good feeling to see the speedo working again and i gave it a good test the week before last by riding from Adelaide to Sydney and back over 5 days and the bike didnt miss a beat.
