Wire Gauges and Amp Ratings.....
« on: September 28, 2012, 08:23:07 AM »
Does anyone have a guide that tells us what gauge wire a 10A one is? a 30A?

Or, conversely - what Amperage does a 2.4mm conductor equate to?

Cheers, Diesel

Hi Diesel,

I use this table when wiring up Hilux (2nd & 3rd batteries - driving lights - air horn - fridge - inverter - additional power outlets) and have never had a problem.

Also, look at the "related documents" near the bottom of this first link.

I hope this helps

What's a great shop to buy different gauge wires?   JayCar? Dick Smith?

Using the wire from Narva, (available in your friendly auto store)

Cable diameter         wire area (cross section)          Amps

         2.5mm                    .64mm (sq)                       5
         3.0                      1.13                                   10
         4.0                      1.85                                   15
         5.0                      2.9                                     25
         6.0                      4.58                                   50

Typically, the wires can safely carry a fair bit more current than the rating. The wiring looms would start to get very heavy very quickly if the larger wires were used. Remember not to bunch high current wires together, as they will build up heat and break down.

Yeah Mal - looking into side stand mod, HIDs (like Gavo's_ and re-running a lot of the farkles wire through a proper fuse box. Sick of failures while out in the boonies!         :cuss

ATM I have no headlights, no high beam, no cigarette socket power and no heated grips. Watched them start to fail whilst on my 4,500km ride to SA and Broken Hill.      :cuss :cuss

Will pull ALL tupperware off and re-wire - hopefully before SEQld OzSTOC Ride to Cabarlah!

Thanks for the loom you guru!     :-++

Cheers, Diesel
