Title: Bike Quip
Post by: Poppy Dave on June 28, 2012, 08:33:26 PM
I know this has been posted before but a couple of guys at the last RTE at New Norcia asked where I got several things on the bike from and I said I'd post it, so here it is:

Dave,
You just gave a link to email Bike Quip I assume you meant to give this link:-

For some time now the BikeQuip web site in the UK has been displaying this notice...

"Important Notice:  Bike-Quip is closed until further notice due to illness"

None of the links work and only the homepage is displaying, so it appears that Keith Munro's great range of quality products for the ST1300 and ST1100 are no longer available.

Pete after looking at your Bike-Quip screen at Strath when Steve and I had morning tea with you in May I came home and tried to order a screen but got the same message.

I love my Bike-Quip screen and recommend them to so many people.

I was one of those and was seriously considering the option.  Maybe if the owner isn't up to reopening, he'll sell the business and it will reopen.  In a worst case, maybe there will be a clearance sale- be sure to let us know if you hear of such a thing!

Here's a copy of a Facebook post from a Honda UK Pan European UK Owners Club member, adding to the info about BikeQuip.   This information was posted on the 1st August 2016.

"Bike-Quip has paused trading at the moment due to the owner Keith in process of recovering from a significant heart-attack. Do email Bike-Quip if you have an interest in any items, but service may be limited at the moment."

On Wednesday I sent the following email to Bike_quip:-

Dear Keith,
This Glen Douglas from Perth Western Australia, as previous customer of Bike-Quip, an ST1300 owner and member of Australian ST Owners Club (OzSTOC) I was saddened to see your web site is closed until further notice due to illness. I hope that whoever is ill is on their way to recovery, there are a lot of OzSTOC members whose thoughts are with you and miss your site.
Please notify me when your web site is back up and running as I am interested in a screen for my ST1300 and I will update the thread on the OzSTOC forum about the Bike-Quip web site
Cheers
Glen

Today I got this reply:-

 Dear Glen,
My most sincere thanks to you for your genuine interest and care about the situation that currently exists within Bike-Quip.
Bike-Quip is very much a 'one man band' but that said, I am thankfully assisted by my wife June on the essential paperwork side of things.
Back in March, having just visited one of my local suppliers, I collapsed in their car park. I am so lucky to still be here! I suffered an aneurysm in my aorta and, I am told, medical help was with me in a couple of minutes. Within another couple of minutes, an ambulance arrived and took me to hospital about 10 miles away.
This hospital, having diagnosed the problem, then had to find a hospital with.... not only a bed for me but also, a surgeon with the appropriate expertise. I was then transferred to a London hospital and the emergency 6/7 hour operation got under way. I should make it clear that I thankfully knew nothing about any of the foregoing, other than chest pain immediately before collapsing.
They got me to 'come round' in Intensive Care and, after 3 weeks, transferred me back to my local hospital. I had a total of 5 weeks in hospital, during which I received excellent care and attention.
My wife June then took on the role of 'Matron June' and, suffice to say.... she has done an excellent job and continues to do so.
Bike-Quip:
My family very wisely decided to close Bike-Quip immediately we were 'hit' with this problem. My wife and I live on our own (our kids flew the nest years ago) and we moved house just 3 months before this problem happened.
Whilst I am making good progress in my recovery, it has been a long and hard haul for both June and I. We were 'warned' that full recovery from such a major operation would take at least 9 months and, when I reflect on the past 5/6 months, I can relate to 9 months being realistic. That said, it may be sooner than this or indeed, it may be a little longer.
Rest assured, I am keen for Bike-Quip to re-open as soon as possible. However, when this happens, I want it to be 'the right thing to do' from every point of view. I want it to be correct for both June and I. There is no point in us doing something in an untimely manner and causing some kind of setback on us and our health. I want it to run as efficiently as it always has. This is also what my customers naturally expect.
So.... when do I realistically think we may re-open?  Considering what we have been through, how I am currently feeling and assuming no significant setbacks, my best guess is early in the New Year. I do hope it is sooner than this.
Again, I thank you for your interest and indeed, your offer of getting a message out there to my existing send potential customers.
I am happy for you to use any part of the above email in your communication to any of our ST1100/1300 colleagues.
In the meantime, if you want to drop me the occasional email, I do not have a problem with this.
Again, many thanks to you and my best wishes to you.
Keith Munro.

Glad to hear you're recovering Keith. I've seen a lot of you're windscreens here in Aus and was quite envious.

Just wondering if you have anyone you can trust/train to start the business again earlier.

Of course your health should always be priority number one! None of us want you to have a set back.

HI Keith - Love my Bike Quip screen  :thumbs Take as long as you need to recover from this type of assault on your body. Coming back when you are 100% will be much easier on your body long term than trying to get things up and running again if you only feel 95% fit.  :wink1

And yet another potential customer here.
I'm on my third ST, and looking for a custom screen.  I've got a VStream off my previous ST in a box, but wasn't so rapt by it that I've bothered to fit it.
All the best with the recovery.  Thank God for ambos with their equipment and surgeons with the skills to overcome these physical frailties.
Great that your wife has stepped up as your nurse, switching from her role as clerical assistant!   :grin

I'm investigating the possibility of having Acrylix Plastics in Adelaide manufacture a copy of the BikeQuip screen, given that BikeQuip are not able to supply for the the time being.   AP have previously made custom motorcycle screens.   If I can get an indication of numbers, it may have an impact on their price.

How many would be interested if this proposal gets some legs?

The screen has a very slight smoky finish, and is about 50mm taller and 50mm wider than the OEM screen.   It has a turned up lip at the top.
I find that it has cut the wind noise caused by the OEM screen down to almost nothing, and you will find the reviews of other users on the forum.

I will know more after I have been to see Acrylix Plastics this week.

After an encouraging phone conversation with Acrylix Plastics the other day, I took the bike and went to see them this morning.   As soon as he saw the compound curves of the BikeQuip screen he said that they could not do them.  This is a disappointing outcome, and I'm sorry to have raised people's expectations.

I note that the Bike Quip web site is now no longer, and suspect the resurrection of Keith's business may not be a possibility.    Perhaps our only chance to source more of these fantastic screens  would be to find out from Keith or his family who was manufacturing them for him, and see if we can submit a direct order to the manufacturer.

Thanks for looking into this Pete. If you do find a willing manufacturer I'm keen. I'm guessing it is the curve at the top which does most of the good work.

Yes, thanks for looking into this.  Like Mark, if you find another manufacturer, I'd be interested.  I imagine there's someone somewhere in OZ who could make them, all we've got to do is find them!

I have been in contact with Keith Munro from Bike Quip and he has sent me his current stock list with special prices for us (Glen D Price) and will do a deal on freight.
Talking to StinkyPete we have not been able to confirm exactly which 1300 screen Pete has but feel that any of the screens would provide the vast reduction in wind noise that Pete has experienced and that we assume is what most people would be looking for.
I have asked Keith if he could provide a pros and cons for each screen in stock but he is about to head off on a break for a few days so it may be a while before I get a reply. Also his health is not the best.
Attached is the stocklist.
So thoughts for the 1300 screens are that those who have expressed interest via this thread would have first options based on the order they expressed interest.
Pete has the tinted version but says it is a very light tint is happy with it not interfering with his vision.
It may help if those members who already have a Bike Quip screen can provide feedback on which screen they have and their thoughts about it.
In terms of freight my thoughts are that we would need to pick a single location and work around that. I am still flying back and forth to Sydney on occasions with a good luggage allowance. I shall also be passing through Melbourne and Adelaide in July.If you are serious about any of these items please pm me and add you email address. As there are a lot of other items I will also start a new thread just to advertise this more widely. Of cause the prices listed do not include freight. These items are also subject to prior sale as people are chasing Keith down.

I have a Bike-Quip screen so here is a little about it.
(The one I have is the Flip Top with 2’ Wider each side (Extra Wide). 21” Tall with the Light Grey tint.)
I have tried a couple of screens on the ST, and this one is by far the best screen I have ever had (on this bike or any other).

(http://i1075.photobucket.com/albums/w435/ShineyOzSTOC/2017-04-23%20OzSTOC%20RTE%20Glasshouse%20Mountains%20Tavern/20170423_114807_zpso2kk3fqa.jpg) (http://s1075.photobucket.com/user/ShineyOzSTOC/media/2017-04-23%20OzSTOC%20RTE%20Glasshouse%20Mountains%20Tavern/20170423_114807_zpso2kk3fqa.jpg.html)

The tint is nice looking and not very dark, I find it easy to see through when fully raised.
With the extra height and width I find that I am protected from bad weather (when moving) extremely well.
The only part of me that gets wet in the rain (with the screen raised and while moving :wink1) is my arms but that's mainly due to me being a large bloke.
The screen is well shaped and fits past my spotlights without hitting anything (I have the Police over mirror mounts with "Australian Moto Gear & Clothing" 20W Spotlights)

Anyway if anyone has any specific questions let me know

Cheers
Shiney

Some feedback from Keith:-

It appears Pete has got one of my ST1300 Flip Top & 2" Wider at each side screens (Extra Wide) and 22" tall.
This is a screen which I used to make available but then I decided to reduce the choice, purely from the point of view..... I could see no worthwhile benefits in the 22" tall when compared with both the 20" and 21" tall versions.
Since making this decision some time ago, I have had no enquiries or adverse feedback about this particular screen being 'dropped'. Sorry Pete!
My own views on this are simple...... (and please push to one side the fact that my ST1300 screens are 100% my own design which I then have manufactured for me):
- no matter which of my screens any customer chooses, the difference in performance when compared with the original Honda screen is huge. This being the case, it then comes down to (for me) aesthetics and I think the 20" screen is the best looking screen, followed by the 21" etc etc..  Again.... sorry Pete!
In summary...... and I say with total confidence having sold over 4000 ST1300 screens, all of your friends and colleagues can look forward to enjoying the difference, no matter which of my screens they put on their bike!
Another thing I would point out to you (all) is..... no matter what the weather, (wind, rain, fog, snow etc etc)., you will not find any benefit from looking through the screen. The highest you will ever set the screen (obviously, only on elec screen models) is to the point where you are looking.... just over the top. With the foregoing in mind, you can ride with either Clear or Light Grey tint.

That's a bummer.
After trying a handful of different screens i can't recommend highly enough the extra wide flip top 22 inch tinted screen.
The fact that he has sold over 4000 screens is very impressive though  :grin

Picked up and fitted my new tinted screen at Glen's today and though only a quick run down the freeway home noticed much less wind turbulence from over the top and much better coverage from the sides, and love the look of the smokey grey tint on my black ST, plus as an added bonus i got to ride in Glen' side car attatched to his Gold Wing :runyay. Let me add my thanks to Glen, Richo and anyone else who was involved in the purchase and dissemination of the windshields. These things are brilliant. I fitted the windshield Wednesday night and rode to Victor Harbor Thursday morning and back Friday arvo. The effect of the windshield was immediately evident - less wind noise and less buffeting at higher speed. The critical test will be with Julie (SWMBO) on the back as she reckons she had a more comfortable ride on the Shadow VT750 with less wind buffeting. Still waiting for the fog to lift (11:06am??) here in the Adelaide Hills so might have to wait for another weekend.
Thanks again to all.
Regards ... Mark

Thanks Shiney for letting me into your man cave and helping (well mostly) fitting the screen.  As others have said the difference is quite marked.  Being a couple of centimetres wider, mine is same height as original, the airflow around the rider is pushed out and the lip pushes flow up and over.  There's some flow around the head when the screen is fully down and raising it about halfway puts most up and over.  I learned all this on my 350km ride home on the M1/Bruce Highway.  I've yet to wind it right up, probably have to wait for rain!

Thanks Glen for organising, shipping and liaising with Keith, great job.  Thanks Shiney for becoming Bright Shiney Depot and thanks Carrol for the coffee , I needed it.

PS new screens collect lots of bugs just like old ones!!

Went for a bit of a ride in varying road types from twisties to freeway, country and towns, visor down & up. Reduced wind noise & buffeting at all speeds, so quite happy with the screen. The Honda V4 decals are a great little edition (see my pic post on the website revamp thread.)

Here's a shot of Candy all done up.
