Rode home from Snowtown Wednesday evening as there was no work until maybe Sunday with all the wet weather we had.
Went to start the bike this morning and dead as a DoDo. Ignition lights came on but dropped out as soon as the start button was pushed. Jump started the bike and headed off to Snowtown with Heather on board. On the way I stopped at the top of hill just outside of Crystal Brook to see if the bike would start and hoping if it didn't a roll down the hill would get it going again. Nice plan but fell apart as soon as I turned the key back on and still dead.
Waved a 4x4 down hoping they had jumper leads; but no. Not a good place to park the bike so I rolled down the hill into town

The 4x4 driver had a test meter (turns out he has a Suzuki 750 and is moving into Peterborough) and the battery read 12.76 volts. As before, I checked all the fuses and all ok.
Heather managed to get some jumper leads from a house across the road and the bike started up ok. At that time I wasn't sure if it was battery or the generator so I removed the headlight leads and head back home. I have one of those cheap 12 volt temp/volt gauges that goes into the power socket and it showed 12.6 volts (with no headlights) at 100 k/h which to me was not right as it usually shows around 13.8 (with headlights on).
Parked the bike in the back yard at home and before turning the key off put the headlight plugs back on and no change in the voltage and though the headlights were as bright as normal. I'm think the generator is ok and it's the battery but the voltage of 12.7 makes me think it's not.

To properly test the battery, you need to read the voltage with the start button pressed. If less than 10 volts the battery is knackered.
Jump starting shows that the bikes elec system is ok.

I get nothing when I turn the key on but I notice the clock goes out and turns back on with the key off.
Can't do much until Monday morning. Hoping the tyre dealer has a battery in stock or I'll have take the car to work until one come in.

Sounds like a collapsed cell is the battery.

Bike back on the road again today - $115 for a SSB (Super Start Batteries) STX14-BS which is the 2nd one of theirs I've used; two years out of the last one.
Amazing how there was no sign of the battery failing as I stopped and started about 25kms from home on the Wednesday evening and it was a no go on the Saturday.

++ you can ride with confidence again. I hate the feeling that you get when the battery starts going. Will it start or won't it. My battery failed with notice at Truro and a I only got going again after a fellow rider helped me with a push start.
