Killing the Darling
« on: January 29, 2019, 03:10:17 PM »
Now that our Do Nothing, Prevaricating, WAP, In the Pockets of the Cotton Industry pollies have managed to kill the Darling, and are blaming it on everything except their weakenss and inaction, I wonder how long it will take before they allow the Murray to die?

This makes me quite angry............   :well

You're not alone Pete.

Every man and his dog knows rivers need water, and to have a former Water Minister boasting about stealing environmental flows, makes my blood boil.

I am disgusted at this government also. They really should be anchors in the River systems  that belong to the country the planet.
This last week I've cried a River maybe I could help save one
Picton  if it doesn’t flood higher than previous times.

It's sheer madness growing cotton and rice in a country as dry as Australia.  How did that idea ever gain support?

I usually do all I can to buy Australian products to support Aussie farmers and businesses, but I'll ensure that I don't buy anything made with Australian grown cotton.

We could do an RTE to Bourke, whch would support local business in a region doing it tough (other than the cotton growers) , and there's a nice Caravan Park on the outskirts of town called Kidman's Camp, where Chris and I stayed.   See   http://www.kidmanscamp.com.au/bourke/

While we are there we could pull some plugs.     :grin   :law

This is the story I heard.
"The American Parker brothers brought cotton growing to Aus in the early 1960's when they bought grazing land near Narrabri NSW. They had poisioned the land where they grew cotton in US to the point where it would grow nothing, so they came here and bought cheap grazing land and developed it into irrigated farming using as much water and chemicals as they wanted."
I saw their original property in the late 1990's and it will now not grow much now, even weeds.
This is my opinion.
To not buy any Australian cotton would be I believe a bad move in so far as all the people who are employed in growing the best quality and cleanest cotton in the world would be out on their ears. What would you buy instead? Nylon and similar synthetics made from oil? Wool? Other countries that produce cotton (eg China/Pakistan) will not do it as well and clean as we can. Cotton is a 'dirty' product because we want to buy a T shirt or undies for a couple of dollars. To get a cotton product to the market for that price requires the farmer to use lots of water. Dryland cotton yields about 10% of what irrigated does, so are you prepared to pay a higher price for those undies as if not then a farmer cannot produce a product for the same price with higher costs and will quickly go broke.
Our politicions have failed us because they have let too many investors (not the average farmer, as most large cotton properties are owned by banks/investment companies/overseas companies who don't give a stuff about the land or people so long as the profits roll in) open up more and more country to irrigated cotton (and other high return crops) for a 'backhander' under the table to get them re-elected,  with the result that now when the country is in drought there is no water in rivers. When you see set-ups like this to pump water from rivers then you can get an understanding of how quickly they can move the water into the storage dams on farm.

I live in fairly save Liberal seats (both State and Federal). I have an appointment to see my local Federal Member on Tuesday to express my concern about some of the current things happening in Federal politics and the Darling/Murray river System will be high on the list. Don't thikn it will do much good but at lease I shall have my say. I suggest that you all do the same.

Hemp with no THC, is a great alternative to cotton,  and produces stronger, longer, and softer lasting fibres.

It needs no pesticides.

It grows 7 times faster and can be cropped several times a year, and uses far less water.

It was, I believe the American Du Pont company back in the 1930's that put pressure on the US government to ban hemp growing because they had just released a new product called Nylon (again big money talks) and put the hemp growers out of business. A bit of info here.
 https://ministryofhemp.com/hemp/history/
Imagine if Australia's pollies had enough balls to stand up to the chemical companies (which are mainly American or European owned) and let farmers grow hemp again, then we would not need to be draining the Darling or Menindee Lakes to water a water hungry crop like cotton. There was a lot of hemp grown around here in the late 1800's and now we grow lucerne to feed horses (another crop that needs lots of water).

The Conservative Party is making one of their policies re-examining the water licensing. They note the Chinese are the real owners of Cubbie Station, so they're using Australian water to get their cotton rather than using their own.  We've sold way too much of Oz to the Chinese. And it's not only the LNP that's to blame.   :OldMan

With the SA Royal Commission report released, we can now we can sit back and watch the political spin doctors on both sides do their stuff,  amd the pollies will continue to do nothing to ensure more water to flows into the river system.   :OldMan

I would love to be shown to be wrong.

They're essentially a committee.

A committee is a group of people who individually can do nothing but together can decide that nothing can be done.
