Mundulla Overnight RTE - 16th October
« on: September 22, 2017, 08:56:12 PM »
We had fantastic weather for our Vic/SA RTE to Mundulla, a little historic town just over the border and not too far from Bordertown.   The SA contingent had a very lazy ride, meeting at the Wellington Courthouse Cafe for a long morning tea overlooking the river.   We crossed the punt and rode to Coonaplyn via Meningie for another stop at Coonalpyn's Silo Cafe, which is over the road from the silo mural.   See  http://www.adelaidenow.com.au/news/south-australia/coonalpyn-grain-silo-artwork-by-guido-van-helten-showing-portraits-of-five-children-finished/news-story/7e6e3da571eda0e34f02762d848a2917 for more information.  The Silo Cafe has the biggest pasties I have ever seen, and would have been at least half the size of a dinner plate.

Our accommodation at Mundulla was in some pretty tidy units over the road from the historic pub.  The pub was really on fire on Saturday night for our meal.  Both the A and B grade footy teams had played in their grand finals, as well as the womens netball.   B grade and the women's team won, so there was lots of celebrations, which were still going at the footy club at 6.30am the nex tmorning when I went for a walk.

This was a terrific location for a  gathering of Ppopeye & Chris, jdbiker & Chippy, Shillas, JohnG and myself.   We all found our own ways home, and I had an easy ride back to Adelaide on the Highway

A bit more to add from what I wrote in the Mundulla RTE post.

The pasty Pete has mentioned is the Ploughman's pasty. Delicious. But after the lamington at Wellington, the pasty at Coonalpyn, meant I couldn't order the mixed grill at Mundulla, although Sir JD did offer to share, and it was suggested the leftovers would make a breakfast as well. My compensatory steak was very good though.

I highly recommend the ride from Mundulla to Kingston SE. Just over an hour's ride, a few bumpy sections and some nice bends, hills & straights. One very bouncy section of 3ks about 20km from Mundulla, but there is a warning beforehand.  Overall very good. A bit of wildlife to watch out for, saw alive & many dead roos, as well as deceased echidna & wombat.

Refuelled at Kingston after checking a few memory spots,  pic of Larry, then off on the roughly 260km to home. The highway has some good bits, but a lot of bouncy sections. A couple of overtaking lanes added since my last time on that road closer to Meningie.

Left Mundulla around 9.30 am to the sounds of still celebrating football players, with the stop at Kingston, was home by just after 1.30, in time to cut the lawn.

All up, around 655km round trip for a very enjoyable SA/VIC RTE. Good food, drink, great riding & most importantly, great company.

Glad you all had a great time and wished I could have joined you.  My plan for the ride for day fell through rather late in the piece but I did that ride yesterday.
