News: Ben T has had a crash
« on: May 26, 2016, 08:07:51 AM »
The following is a bit of news I recently received from Ben T:

G'day Dave

Well it looks like its the end of the road for my ST.  We were coming back from a Honda/4 Club run the weekend before last and a 4WD ran into the back of us at Yatala. Chris and I were thrown off the bike, luckily onto the left side of the road and the bike was firstly thrown onto its left side and then flipped onto its right side so its a bit of a mess. the insurance hasn't been finalised as yet but the repairers reckon it will be a write-off!

Chris and I sustained quite a bit of soft tissue bruising and Chris copped the top box into her ribs and fell heavily on her left knee so has been having trouble walking and "laughing" is a real pain!! However, apparently there are no bones broken so that's a bonus??  Our riding gear was ripped and scruffed so we'll be going the driver of the car for new gear as well. I haven't decided on 3rd party claims as yet.

Anyway its a shame that the bike has ended its days this way. It was looking and riding as good as it has ever been so I'm really pissed off. Apparently I could buy back the wreck from the insurance co. but it would be very marginal as to whether it would be worthwhile financially as the parts along come to over $5,000. I haven't decided whether I will buy another one or something else as yet.

Obviously we won't be riding for a while and it might be longer before Chris is ready to climb aboard a bike again.

Catch you later. I'm happy if you want to send this message on to others in the club. We might see you some time at an RTE but we'll most likely be on the BMW!!

Ben T

Please join me in wishing Ben and Chris a speedy recovery.
I hope you both recover quickly and are able to get back on two wheels soon :thumbsup and remember, we don't mind if you ride the BMW or even drive a car when attending an RTE, it your company that is most important :grin

Cheers

That's a nasty accident- pathetic that drivers act in this way.  And why is it so often fourby drivers? (present company excepted).
Back injuries, even apparently minor, can last a long time and keep returning when you thought they had healed.  Make sure you get medical advice, especially regarding the back.  Damn shame about the ST.

Ben & Chris, sorry to hear of the 4bee causing an accident. Really pleased to hear there are no broken bones.

I can fully relate to Chris' nervousness regarding returning to riding.

Speedy recovery and hope the insurance is sorted soonest.
Cheers,

Ben, Chris

Just wanted to add my thoughts to those of everyone above.  Get well soon.

By the way, I still have that recording of you at the Perth dinner swearing to ride an ST (or was it "the" ST?) to the next Rally.  I guess we could always put some stickers on the beemer.......

Hi all,

I have received an update from Ben and he has asked me to pass it on to everyone.

G'day Dave

Unfortunately my ST1100 has been written off and the insurance company wanted too much for the wreck to make it economically viable to buy it back and repair it.  The cost of repairing it is simply more than what it would be worth or for that matter buying a much newer model with far less kms on the clock (mine had done 225,000 km). So I have accepted the payout and am moving on which is a shame as I've owned the bike for 20 years and we have done a lot of campaigns together!!  I don't know whether I will buy another one at this stage.  We might just use the BMW for the time being and see how things go but haven't ruled out getting another ST1100 in the future as I really like them.

While I am pretty well recovered from the accident, Chris is improving but has a few weeks to go before she is back to tip top condition and able to get on a bike again.  She coped a pretty big wack from the top box as it was broken from its mount and pushed into her ribs, and she fell heavily on her left knee so that is giving her some grief.  I haven't instigated any third party action as yet but am still considering action.

As for the RTE to Esk this Sunday, unfortunately we have our Honda CB750/4 club meeting this Sunday so won't be able to make it to the RTE but I've been talking to Dave Brown (DB5) who is planning a ride to the Bunya Mountain RTE later this year so I might see if we can get too that one.

If I can work out how to put some photos of the crashed bike on the forum, I'll do that!??

Catch you later

Ben T

Ben later sent me the pics, and here they are.

Yep- that amount of visible damage would write off an older bike.  Then there's the likely frame damage at least in the swing arm area.
A sad end to a very nice looking red ST!    :'(
I trust you are both recovering well.  All the best with the insurers.
