In the 1100, I separated the horn into the compressor and Sound maker joined by plastic tubing. This made it easier to fit both bits. I usefd a relay switched by the horn button, with power coming from a custom fuse setup.

Yes- when I put one in my ST1100 there simply wasn't space to mount the unit without separating the compressor from the horn.  This meant there was a slight hesitation as the air in the tube was compressed.

Well, that was a waste of time...  :||||

I finally decided to have a go at installing the airhorn I'd bought ages ago.

After getting the right hand side fairing off I was confronted with a birds nest of extra wiring and black boxes etc related to the HID headlight setup that was already fitted to the bike when I purchased it...right smack bang where the air horn was going to be located.

I'm gonna see if I can move stuff around a bit but it's not looking good... :o

If I was more confident with electrical stuff I'd probably rip out the HID headlights as I've never been particularly happy with them and go back to the standard setup.

Without ever having used HIDs or having seen what ancillary kit is required to run them, I’d hazard a guess that they have been surpassed by modern good-quality LEDs

The HIDs actually throw a better beam, but there's a noticeable lag when they are cold.  The current drain is definitely higher than LEDs and the LEDs' wiring much simpler.  You just need to get LEDs with as tight a beam as you can afford.  Too many just throw a "glow" rather than a beam, but they all look to on-coming traffic as if you are firing lasers.

You're possibly right, Steve, trouble is, aftermarket LED conversions aren't legal as far as I'm aware...

I actually thought the HID's wouldn't be legal either but it passed the roadworthy no worries so I can only assume their brightness is under the limit.
I did question the seller about them and he said the roadworthy guy told him they weren't an issue...


Oh, getting back to the birds nest of wires etc, I did manage to reroute a few things and eventually cleared a bit of room around the horn area but I actually don't think the airhorn is gonna fit there regardless...  :||||

Well, after rearranging the birds nest of wiring & little black boxes I ended up installing my airhorn in the same location that Shiney recommended.  :thumbs

One change I did make though was with the position of the airhorn relay. This I mounted close to the battery behind the side cover.
I figured it would be much easier to replace it if it ever craps itself...and, I wouldn't have to rip the fairing back off...
This did make the routing of the extra wiring that much harder to run but I think it should be worth it.

Once back on the road, I'll be almost looking forward to some idiot doing the wrong thing so I can give them a good blast... :grin


What a birds nest of wiring! Hopefully none of it will interfere with the fitting of the fairing...



That frame gusset made the perfect spot to mount the relay. It even had a ready made hole for the bolt!

Well, yesterday I made an executive decision to remove the HID's and it's associated "birds nest" of wiring.  :law

It's back to a pair of H4's for me...
It shouldn't be majorly hard as I believe it was all plug & play...famous last words, I know...  :rofl

Hi Steve...

There are slightly brighter ones than the ones I fitted but they tend to burn out even more quickly.

I've used these particular type in my car and found them to be a reasonable compromise regarding brightness and longevity.

I guess time will tell if they last as long in my ST as they did in my car...  Wot thuh

Well, I took my ST for a brief spin tonight after finally getting it all back together.

Pretty happy with the headlights so far, certainly an improvement, I believe, on the HID's....much better spread too.

I guess a decent run at night is now in order to fully determine how good they are but from my brief ride tonight the results are certainly encouraging... :thumbs

*Just an update on the headlights...

Travelling from the Bruthen RTE back to our overnight accommodation in Bairnsdale last Saturday night was a good test of these globes.
This was actually the first time I'd ridden at night with a pillion since installing them so I was curious as to how they would go.

I needn't have worried as I found them pretty good, being able to see far enough into the distance and to the sides that I felt quite confident sitting on the speed limit in spite of being a bit wary of kangaroos.

I decided to order another set the next day, just in case these fail down the track.
The fact that they were available with a 25% discount if I ordered them before midnight Sunday helped with the decision...  :thumbs
