Clutch Cover - RAM Mount
« on: May 28, 2016, 09:31:26 PM »
As there is not space on the handle bars on my ST1300 I'm trying to figure out how to mount my phone so I can use it as GPS. I've been looking through the RAM mount catalog and yet to find a good option on how to fix it to the clutch cover on my bike as I think that might the best space for it. I already have a cheap ALDI GPS mounted in the middle of the bars and this makes fitting the keys a PITA so i wont to get rid of it as it does not even work properly (the screen is busted).  I have one of those LifeProof case bar mount which were designed to wrap around the bars and there is just no room on the bars for it.
I like the look of these:
http://www.rammount.com/part/RAM-B-349U
but they don't sell one with a small enough fitting to go in the holes that the clutch cover screws come out of.
Anyone have a suggestion on how I can get a RAM mount on?
tks

Where do the MCL parts originate from? If they are from the US they are going to a bit more expensive than the list price when you include freight and currency conversion. I was just looking at these ones:
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/RAM-Mount-Motorcycle-Brake-Clutch-Reservoir-Base-2x1-Balls-GPS-RAM-B-309-2U/151443190057?_trksid=p2141725.c100338.m3726&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20150313114020%26meid%3D932dc09e0b2346f5819ddf1d399c8872%26pid%3D100338%26rk%3D16%26rkt%3D19%26sd%3D151419671081

They mount in front of the clutch or brake brackets and might be an option though I do have a switch in front of the clutch master cylinder for the Oxford heated grips.

Motor Cycle Larry (MCL) is a US company, so you need to convert the cost from USD to AUD and add freight.   This makes it an expensive accessory, but if you can afford it, the price is forgotten long after the quality and neatness is remembered.    Some of us recently did a group purchase, so we only paid one lot of shipping for the purchase of seven units.

Mmmm ........ I have one of those I don't want, brand new, still in sealed plastic wrap - $35.00 posted to anywhere in Oz.

I've just realized that my phone mount (LifeProof case) has a 22 mm ball and all the RAM mounts are 25 mm. Not really sure what to do now as the handlebar mount I have is designed to wrap around the bars and there is nowhere to do this on the ST1300. I've just Googled 22 mm ball mounts and they look to be pretty hard to find.
Not sure what to do now.

The short or long "joiner" for the 1" mount should clamp down on one end to a 22mm ball- maybe require a little trimming of the inner edge to allow it to be tight.

Ram mount have an adaptor from 25mm to another size. I am not sure of exact size. Check the good range here.....

The LifeProof mount has the female end so I need a 22 mm ball to fit into it otherwise I'm going to have to cut the ball of my original fitting which might not even work and leave with no other option than to buy a new one.
Clever mongrels to design it that way so you can't use RAM mount balls.
