Title: For $5.99, i'll give them a shot.
Post by: ruSTyEB on July 27, 2012, 05:21:22 PM
..
How do the Chineese do it?  One things for sure at $5.99 they are worth the punt and might just do the job (don't need a furnace).

I'll let you know once installed if I'd been better buying a lotto ticket.

Looks like you can't go rong!

"Fits for most modles."

"If the bike doesn't have a battery, just need to locate the DC regulator."

"Mount the switch in the rod of the rear view mirror"

"Connect the power line.  Line Red and Line Black are not divided into positive and negative, but must installed in the line control by the key door."

Couldn't be simpler!

Me too- joined the rush for the bargain.  Might be the worst or best $5.99 I've spent in a while.
We'll all have to wait and see.
Who's the first to install them and report back?

You got yours yet, ruSTyEB?

Might be Summer by then!

They look like they're single setting.  Might need to pick Brock's brains about a suitable rheostat.

I'll see how they go by turning them on and off manually.  Otherwise some sort of 12 volt step down circuit, kind of like this :  http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=MP3209 (http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=MP3209)

My $5.99 grip warmers just arrived.  Look fine.  Switch seems to be Jarcar quality (I know, theirs are made in China too).
The over-sleeves are a sort of vinyl, and they come with a roll of adhesive tape.
The instructions are in Chinese.  KRudd- are you there?  I'm wondering if the sleeves are meant to be heat shrink (hot air gun) or slip on, fold and tape, or cut and overlap and tape.

Has anyone bought any like that with English instructions?

Funny about the free postage.  The postmark dated 09 August has the Chinese Yuan sign and 00.00, making it look like it's the Chinese Post Office that's giving away the free postage, maybe as an aid to exporters.  Presumably that means the Oz P.O. is also delivering for free- that would be how international postage works.  Since mail from Oz to overseas would be far less than that imported, our P.O. would seem to be disadvantaged.  Mind you, when I pay $10 for a small package to travel 800 km, I don't worry about them going broke!

Mine arrived today too. Look ok quality, but will try and fit a two position switch and a resistor for two heat settings. Been a warm day today, probably wont need them now until next winter. I am planning to replace the grips, anybody got any suggestions?

They must have been posted together, mine arrived today too.  Pity so did warmer weather :-)

Biggles, the zero cost postage symbol 'could' be the Chineese equivalent to 'postage paid'?

As far as instructions, the eBay listing had some:

Installation instructions:

1.Place the heat plate on the right position

2.Wrap the heat plate around to the handlebars evenly, especially at the junction with the heating plate.

3.Put on the jacket tube and adjust the position, using a hot-air gun blowing outer sleeve shrinkage uniformity.

4.Mount the switch in the rod of the rear view mirror

5.Connect the power line.Line Red and Line Black are not divided into positive and negative, but must installed in the line control by the key door.

If you don't fancy putting your hands on them you could always attach them to the sump and power them from a charger during winter so the bike starts with better engine lube protection in those -C figures guys have been talking about.

Got to love instruction #5...how to mangle the English language!

Translation:  5. The polarity is not important, but the circuit must be switched by the ignition. (i.e. not hot wired).

But you had worked that out yourself.

@ Nh478m- it ain't the UK, mate.  The oil is still liquid in most of Australia on cold mornings.  The main time we see negative temps is on the road at dawn.  Except Canberra whose frigid temperatures are modified by Pollies' steaming BS when Parliament is in session- the other 90% of the Winter no-one goes outside to try and start an engine.

I might modify that as those in the Victoria High Country, NSW snow fields and inland NSW/Qld might say that sub zero temperatures are quite normal, but only down to -10c or so.  If I was inland Australia during winter I would expect -5c or less temperatures.  Of course nothing like the -20c temperatures on North America and other arctic zones. In Austrlia we would rarely see those sort of temperatures

You might also be able to rig up a heated seat with those pads too.

Has anyone had them installed and working yet?

Reliability report?

Interestingly - this guy installs them OVER the existing rubber grip.....

(by the way - music he chose was the YouTube Anthem - so sound off for this one)

NO NO NO NO

  :|||| :|||| :||||

Do not connect the power feed to the lighting circuit ever. A short will blow the lighting fuse, normal use could also blow the lighting fuse...

Not sure I agree with putting them over the grips either, too prone to damage.

...Hi Guys, look I know I have come in on this thread somewhat late but...I have been using these for about 10 years without any problems, but a few things to note from the installation I did:

1)...I placed the heat elements under the grips not over em like the bloke in the YouTube clip...and on the LEFT side I placed / fixed  a plastic bar sleeve in order to prevent the heat being dissipated along the handle bars...I have two (2), others to give away if anyone interested...and yes you can routinely replace worn grips...and yes works equally well with form type grips :thumb.

2)...I added  a ceramic ballast resistor (sorry can't remember value), and hung it in the breeze proximal to Left stanchion...this lowers the heat to a low setting.

3)...Replaced the on / off toggle switch with a on / off /on switch to thereby give a low setting and a high setting.

4)...Took the power from the ignition circuit at the battery and added a small relay (pedantic and really not necessary)...but taking the power from the ignition circuit idiot proofed me inadvertently flattening the battery :thumbsup and...

5)...used approx 15cm of heat shrink to cover the wiring from the elements.

As I said that was at least 10 years ago and at that time the all up cost was about $20...have spent much more on replacement grips since then :eek

 Ciao, the can :)

Evein' Biggles...

No problem...when you get the left grip off (I used compressed air), clean up any residue adhesive using a cheap volatile thinner...then (I used a  GP quick grip starting 1cm from the end of the handle bar), and without letting it go-off to tacky, place the 'tube' and leave for 24/24 to go off...then carefully cut off the sealed end so that the harmonic balance weight can be reinstalled later...I the wrapped the element around so that the 'gap' was proximal to where the end of my fingers would rest.

OK after the element has been 'fixed' to the tube...put GP quick grip only along the space left between the two ends of the heating element and if you don't have access to compressed air...use some soapy water (very sparingly), to the element and slide the grip on before the GP quick grip goes tacky and again leave for 24/24...haven't had a grip come loose yet...touch wood :whistle.

Cheers Dick :)

I've started a new thread with the video of the install:

Not sure how good these will be in Winter, pretty sure they won't do too much if temps fall below 0.

At least the wiring is there if I upgrade :grin
