This is just for general interest sake as I dont have the dollars to change my pipes anyway ...BUT.... why do people change exhausts from the OEM to something different?
Os it just for sounds and looks or is there another reason to do with better running?
I know some people like loud pipes and there is constant debate about loud pipes save lives ... and this is not the thread for that argument.
I am personally a fan of super quiet bikes .... to me when I hear a super quiet bike idling with that sexy hummer it just screams silently of quality and hidden power .... but that is my tale on sounds.
But back to main question... is there an advantage to aftermarket pipes?

I have fitted after market mufflers , Delkevic DL10 , to my 1100 and They enable me to hear what the bike is doing , also the bike is breathing better with these pipes .

:blu13 My Blue BeaST is fitted with 1kg Delkevic mufflers opposed to oem 9kg mufflers plus you can touch them almost immediately after stopping the motor jmo 👍 ++ :blu13left

There is little to no performance gain to be had with any mods to the STs, they just run extremely well. Some change the pipes for a "Nicer Note", but I like the bike as is. The ST is actually pretty quiet with no muffler surprisingly enough.
Do not throw dollars at the bike for "Performance", as guys in the states have tried to no avail. It just cost them a lot of money.

My ST ran very well on the OEM pipes. They looked good on the bike and sounded OK to me, but I'm certainly not a fan of noisy exhausts when touring. Like Brock suggested, there is little point in chasing performance increases as the performance of the 1300 is more than adequate for the task required.

The difference:
* Little performance increase (but not much, for the price it is not worth it for this reason alone)
* The sound.
* The weight saving.
* The look.
* If carbon fiber pipes are used they cool down extremely fast.
I have Delkevic DL10 carbon fiber pipes on my ST1300 and enjoy all the things listed above, for me it was worth the price :grin

Precisely why I won't change the mufflers.
I would have thought that after 20 years the OEM mufflers on our 1100 would have needed replacing but so far all is good.
I like triangle design of the 1300 ones.

I have the Staintune exhaust
It's all about the look and a little about the sound :grin

On my 1300 I have Staintunes and run them without the removable final baffles. Look good, sound a little better, you don't hear them at cruising and definitely weigh less. Value for money?? By putting a small indent on the bottom (with a hammer and piece of scaff tube) you don't have to remove the right muffler to get the axle out when removing the back wheel.

When it comes to "the look", I like the designer's idea of the two triangles echoing the engine's "V" format, and the four holes announcing the number of cylinders. They'd have to be among the most distinctive profiles around.

Sorry if you’ve talked about this elsewhere, but what did you do to achieve extra note with the stock mufflers?

I have heard a 1300 with a stock muffler modified by knocking a hole in a baffle, but I reckon it sounded quite horrible.

Sometimes I wish the ST1300 sounded a little less like the George Jetson car but as I say to my Harley riding mates.
"If you ride a jet, it'll sound like a turbine!"
I followed 6 Harleys with deafening pipes out of Newcastle after bike night last Friday. i couldn't hear my CB1100 and the vibrations I was feeling at first made me think there was something up with my bike!!! I couldn't think of anything worse than having a bike like that.
Their slow promenade along the Newie waterfront had the desired effect though. Most diners and bar hoppers turned and looked when they heard the racket.
And I got to bask in the reflected glory tagging along behind!!!
