I've done all the dumb things!

In the immortal words of Paul Kelly  today I added to my dumb things....
Turned on my helmet bluetooth, put my phone on the seat.....put on my helmet and jacket and off to work on a glorious riding day in Victoria.  Strangely, not long after the bluetooth faded out....is it low on power I think?
Hmmmmm......oh crap.....where's my phone?
Backtracking I discovered the poor old iphone4 (yes, laugh now...it's an old model eh)....lying sadly facedown on the road edge with a busted screen...but still working!
So, my wife was not amused as I did the same thing with my glasses a couple of years ago but never found them. 
Add these activities to some of my famous workshop stuff-ups and  you get the general picture of my motorcycling life

 . It happens to us all.  How many of us have tweaked this or tightened that to save 10 dollars only to have it cost 10 times that to get it fixed properly.  Could be a good section in the forum, what is my biggest or best stuff up (bike related)

There are a whole range of swear words, cusses, iterations and rantings related specifically to this kind of thing. Unfortunately, I too am fluent in all forms over the years.

It's the nature of motorcycles- we're exposed.
I always leave my helmet, gloves and sunglasses on the seat while I pay for my petrol (currently in QLD that involves taking out a second mortgage).
Once in Parkes I forgot the sunglasses (prescription dual zone) and rode off, then returned to find them on the ground and flattened by a car's tyres.  I still have them- they're favourites, but now have a 5mm star embellishment in the top of the left lens.

My “DUMB” story involves leaving a pair of gloves on the top box after a brief stopover on the side of the highway up in the Pilbra.  I don't know why I left them there and must have been tired.   They were a very nice pair of summer gloves with hard knuckle protection.   They quickly blew off once I got going, so I did a "U" turn and went back to get them, and then stood on the side of the road and watched them get run over by a road train and dragged down the road.   I walked fifty meters back down the road to retrieve them, only to watch them get run over again my another road train going in the opposite direction.
 
I needed a new pair......

Some of the dumb things can bring a wry smile to one’s dial . . . Like filling one’s bike with a different fuel then usual or sitting on a BBQ to warm up in a cold discussion, or putting one’s bike on the sidestand only to find one forgot to extend said stand . .

There was this one time, in the garage, where I tried to start the bike, it kicked over, but wouldn't start. Checked fuel - OK, checked plugs for spark - OK, checked fuses - OK, running very late for work, then I checked the kill switch.
Somehow I'd managed to turn it off without realising it.

Not bike related, but getting to the Airport for a work trip to Melbourne to realise I'd left my wallet at home.

Coming back from the Loxton a couple of years ago we stopped at the Northern end of the Burra Truck bypass as we usually do. It was starting to get to dark for the sunnies so I decided to remove them. Not sure where I put them but I never had them when I got home. We went back there a few days later and no glasses.

I'll preface this by saying it happened once..........ready to set off for work a number of years ago........bike warmed up stuff safely packed in the gearsack (yup that long ago) kiss the wife.........sunnies on ...jacket done up.....gloves on ..........down the road I go....VVVRRrroooom......wind noise louder then normal in the ears.......forgot to don the lid...D'oh!!

In Port Lincoln the Mobil servo has a pump dedicated to boat fuel (50:1) in amongst the others. I was in a hurry one day, raced in with a bone dry tank and completely filled the XD Falcon with boat fuel. The attendant waited until I'd finished then wandered out and asked if I always filled the car tank with boat fuel. I thanked him profusely for waiting until I'd finished filling the car. The XD was a well oiled machine, that one.

Yep, done this one, kill switch is now the first thing I check.

I think we have all done that.  I know I was told to check that when I first bought a bike... but somehow couldn't recall this advice when the moment arised.  I was getting very close to kicking something before thinking to check that.

Yep, done this one, kill switch is now the first thing I check.

I've done that several times but on my ST if the Kill switch is OFF it won't even crank! You push the button and nothing. Very disconcerting.
