Excellent buying at that price and mileage.  If it's ex-Cop, it's got the dual, plus new bits and power outlets.
Also the last model built.

If it's a ST1100PY then it's year 2000 as 2003 model should be ST11003P

The 2000 model year was the last to use letters as the year code. 2001 models onwards used a number for the year code which followed through on to the 1300 models

I was the unfortunate sod that bought this bike. I live in Toowoomba and also own a 2001 St1100A. I wanted this ex police bike for an extended trip around Oz and it all sounded good. I went to collect it to ride it back to Sydney initially and when it started the owner let it idle at 200rpm and it was running sick as a dog. He claimed he had done all his own maintenance including the valves but had stuffed everything and was running a cheap car oil filter on it. Anyway I attempted to ride away and couldnt turn out of his driveway. The front tyre had 2lbs of air in it and he knew I had to ride it to QLD!  I managed to get it to a servo but couldnt get any gears or neutral and had a terrible time just riding it to my sons house. I put in new plugs air filter changed the oil and filter etc and set off for QLD only to suffer major clutch problems and barely made it home to Highfields. Its been at Toowomba Honda since and it had a completely stuffed clutch, carbs full of dirt, metal on metal on the rear disc - the list goes on. Bargain -NO! The mongrel knew all the problems and the bike had not been ridden for 18mths but no mention of that in the ad. The lesson - dont buy on Ebay unless you can inspect the bike first and unfortunately in todays world, treat sellers as liars until proved otherwise. I'm collecting the bike today Wed 19 Sep but even after stripping the carbs the dilligent mechanics cant get it to stop running rich on the r/h bank, even after checking valves , ignition etc. Anyone heard of this problem before? I may ultimately have to source a decent set of second hand carbs. Happier times ahead I hope. Bob Matthews

The only consolation is that after spending maybe two grand, you'll have a good bike that you know all about.  $7K might be a little too much in today's market, but it does have some new bits.  I hope you didn't have to buy new Honda disks!
I bought a 2000 PY back in 2006 for $7840, but it had 92,500 kays on it, so while you had serious disappointments, it's not such a hopeless case.
It's a pity there is an ST owner in the world who has such poor integrity- maybe that's why he's an Ex-ST owner...  couldn't live up to the standard!

Thanks for the support guys. I'll pop into see you soon Graham - I have relatives here today so am just picking up the bike. Its a testament to the ST's great design and strength that I was able to ride it back the way it was. I'm philosophical and will get it right. I bought a new ST1300 from Toowoomba Honda back in 2006 and owned it for six years and it was a pleasure and incredibly economical - I rode from Highfields to Walcha on a tank (just over 550k's). I'd also owned an almost new blue 2001 ST1100A I purchased with 5K on the clock in 2002 and put up decent k's on both those bikes. As a traditionalist I just like the styling on the 1100 a bit better and the gentle relaxed nature.  :)

Sorry to hear about your experience. I don't know how a bike with that few kms could get in such condition.  I don't have any further ideas about only the right bank running rich as it seems all the basics have been looked at.  Sometimes after a bike has been in such poor tune for so long a decent run and using some fuel system cleaner helps a lot.  I am also trying to chase down a similar issue with a front right cylinder on an ST11 fouling the spark plug after 10,000kms or so, and always looking dark. Carbs have new jets etc and synch have been done so time to check the valve clearances.  If I find anything I will report back as it may help.

Warhorse,

You should have found us earlier, some one could have gone to check the bike out for you. You say he did the maintenance himself??? Dont think so, what a cretin. You should have a great machine once the Doc get through with it.

SAAZ,

Try swapping plug leads , it may not be firing properly on that cylinder (If you havent already ) or moving the plug, it may be faulty.

Previously I tracked down a spark problem. The lead needed trimming and it fired fine then. I think whoever serviced the bike (ex-police) must have just pulled on the leads to get the spark plug caps off.  A few plugs have been tried, so there is an underlying problem somewhere.

Just picked up the bike and the new clutch is fine - thats the good part. They cant find why its running rich on the r/h cylinders and have done their best after removing and replacing the carbs four times, thoroughly cleaning them etc. Its had two new sets of plugs and they tested the coils, valve clearances etc, all fine. Its ok & rideable but a way off being right. I've just put in some carb cleaner and am going to give it a good highway run to get that through the system but I suspect that wont do much. The bike is also a bit chattery at idle even at 1100rpm. No where near as quiet as the 1100A.  The mechanics never mentioned it and its hard to define where it coming from -maybe the timning belt or pulleys? I'd have to listen to another with similar K's. I have mixed feelings of happiness with the work thats been done but an uneasy feeling that theres more to come, My wife was right, I should have been happy to have just one ST!!

Saaz, I'd be looking at valve guides and valve stem oil seals.

I had trouble with a Ford V8 years ago that had similar idications and turned out to be a blockage in the header pipe below the manifold.

Yes Sabie.  It's a pun on the phrase "casting aspersions".  Sometimes called a "Spoonerism".
