2002 ST1300 for sale
« on: September 09, 2013, 07:35:57 PM »
 :13Candy

No photos yet as I will wait until I detail the bike but I have decided to sell my '02 St1300.

I have only had it since easter this year after flying to the Gold Coast and buying it from it's original
mature aged owner. I am 62 myself, quite short and to be honest this bike is just too much for me to
handle. The bike itself is absolutely magnificent but I am not. I only wish I could have afforded it earlier
in my life.

Colour : Candy red, 90,000ks. Registered (Vic) until easter 2014.
Will have 2 brand new Pirelli Angel GT's fitted over the next week or so.
New light tint after market screen from 'Screens for Bikes'. 12V socket.
Oxford heated grips, electric adjustable screen (original owner imported
this kit from the UK as the 02 model did not come with this). 33litre Givi
topbox, New Delkevic oval slip ons, Hella driving lights, sho-roo thingys,
fitted lambswool seat covers, throttle lock cruise.

2,000ks ago I fitted new plugs, K&N filter, honda oil filter, mobil 1 in engine
and mobil synthetic gear oil for drive. Since buying it in easter of this year I
have basically done one trip from Sydney to home in Melbourne plus a handful
of short trips for a couple of hours or so.

Apart from the tyres, yet to be fitted, this bike is absolutely ready to jump on
and tour Australia. It goes like a train and it doesn't need any money spent on
it. Normal marks for it's mileage.
Red book valuation for a private sale is between $7800 - $9300.
I am asking $8500 firm. It's basically what I paid for it 5 months but I have done
very little k's since then and have paid reg, tyres, service costs etc. I think this is
a fair price and I am happy with that. Hope someone out there might know of
someone else who is interested.
The bike k's have all accumulated on trips and it has never been a commuter.

cheers for now
Wayne'o

thanks '..pete'.

I will definitely keep riding, it's just a matter of find something suitable. Today I rode son of ST1300,
the Honda NT700V Deauville and loved it. Approx. 100kgs lighter, shaft drive, panniers, fairing etc.
Also narrower and very nimble. :thumbs

It won't have the grunt the of 13 but the ride today didn't disappoint me at all. I could live with it quite
easily and continue riding for many years. Health is good apart from not being as physically strong as in the
past. From my point of view, the Deauville is perceived as boring and slow, a bit like me I suppose, but I
think the bike is very underated.

Over the past 2 weeks I have riden also BMW's F800ST and a Bandit 1250. Both quick but not what I was
looking for.

Thanks again,
Wayne

I have a mate who tours on a Deauville, and met a guy in the middle of Victoria somewhere who had been across to WA and back on more than one occasion on his Deauville.   His experience was that he needed to row the gears a bit, but the performance was more than enough for touring.   A Yamaha XJ900 might be worth considering.    900cc, air cooled, shaft drive, all good for toruing

Good suggestion Pete. I actually have thought of them and are very familiar with Yamaha inline aircooled fours.
I have had 3, but none with shaftdrive. A friend of mine had an XJ900 Diversion and he thought it was very bland.
Nevertheless, one man's meat is another man's poison, so they say, so I will check them out as well and perhaps
put my bum on one if I get the chance.

I know what you mean about rowing the gears on the Deauville, but I did find the engine surprisingly flexible and changing
the gears is no problem. It's a very light clutch gear change.

Will keep you informed so..... :popcorn

May I ask what the problem was you had with the ST?
Was it just the weight? I mean everyone here can agree these things are an elephant to move around.

Or was more the handling of it?

Not trying to talk you out of it, I'm just curious

Hi Marcus,

It really is a weight issue for me. Yes, definitely have to think about where you put it all the time when parked. I can
barely move it when stationery. Sometimes I even find it hard to straighten up off the sidestand. I am only 1.7m.

No pun intended, but the weight weighs on my mind all the time when riding it. I find that I need a lot of body leverage
to tip it into corners etc etc. The handling of the bike is superb really, I am the weak link here. What the ST13 does it does
so brilliantly, it is unlike any other bike that I have owned over nearly 40 yrs of riding and I have had around 35 bikes in that
time. But, it was worrying me to the point that I would look at the bike and rather than seeing the enjoyment factor, I would
see the weight, so what was happening was that I wouldn't take it for a ride eventhough I wanted too.

When it gets to that point you must really start to ask yourself some questions. I can't get any younger, and I am not interested in
trying to regain enough strength to man handle it. I will just change bikes so that I can continue to enjoy riding.

Riding the Deauville (236kg) felt so light and nimble even though that is still quite weighty, but not compared to the ST. Also, there are
times when I have to commute on the bike and did not like riding the ST in stop /start traffic. The Deauville, feeling so much lighter, narrower and nimble is a better ride in this situation and it is narrow for filtering.

I think swaping over to the Deauville is the next best thing for me, weight considering. I will certainly miss that freight train feel and
mountain of torque of the V4 but really when I studied how I was riding the ST, speed wise, I really didn't need it. The Deauville, I
feel, will tick the boxes for some time yet and if this is what it takes to let me continue to enjoy riding then so be it.

Believe me if I was a younger man (or taller and stronger)  I would be sticking with the ST.

Love the forum and will stay connected to it if that is OK?

cheers and happy travels
Wayne

Nice explanation Wayne...

I was just curious that's all, I assumed it was a weight issue... but was interested if it was anything else...

And by all means stick around the more the merrier... also don't feel like you can't come any any rides we plan... we're not bike elitest snobs here... hahaha

Anyway I'm glad you found something you're comfortable with... looking forward to checking it out in the future :D

Hi Wayne,

I'm a little like yourself, vertically challenged that is, I'm about the same height as you and prior to buying myself a pair of Tactical boots recently (recommended by Shiney), that have a very thick, non slip sole, I never knew what it felt like to be able to flat foot both sides at the same time, but I've never had a problem cornering the bike because I counter steer the bike so it becomes unnecessary to move your body weight around too much. As far as moving the bike around when stationary, yes, that's not always easy, but I improvise, I move the bike around without mounting the bike. I simply use my thigh to push the bike upright from the side stand and move it backward or forward before placing on the side stand again before throwing my leg over. I'm also very careful about where I park the bike, hopeful of making all of the above unnecessary! It works for me mate. Incidentally I've just turned 73 years young!  Ha!  I have to agree with you about riding the bike in traffic, they're not the best commuter! You have to be extra careful to keep the bike perfectly upright when coming to a stop cause it's bloody hard to hold up if it starts to go!!   Love the Deauville though........great choice! :grin
There are many paths to the top of the mountain.....but we all need to find our own way!

You're right Marcus, that is sort of funny as there really isn't that much traffic in Tassie, however my comment wasn't necessarily confined just to Tassie. Last time I rode through Melbourne it was a nightmare as I didn't really know where I was going and at that stage I didn't have any GPS rigged up. I wouldn't want to do that again! No problem with Brisbane though as I know it blindfolded. Well, I did five years ago!! Probably different now! :grin

With the two tunnels and a third on the way, plus the Inner City Bypass and redeveloped Kingsford Smith Drive, you'd need reorienting.

That Google satellite image is a couple of years old- construction stage.
For the modern man who lives in the city, riding a bike might be one of the only ways to escape the humdrum monotony. To take off and ride. To be both at one with nature and one with the bike. To feel masculine. Adam Piggott

Hi Wayne,
Neil from Emerald in Vic. I have a 2006 build NT700 Deauville in metalic mica gold finish sitting in the shed, its in mint condition, less than 18Ks, fitted with a OEM topbox, dust cover, OEM soft pannier liner bags, kryptonite disc lock & new rear tyre. Last trip was two up around Tasmania, a little beauty but since upsizing to an ST1300 last November the Deauville is not getting any running. Will sell with RWC, 18K service done. Mature owner, always garaged, purchased in 12/2007.
Cheers
Neil

Very handy to know Neil, and close to home, to boot.

The ST gets new rubber next week and then I will  post a photo on this site plus place it on  Gumtree and BikeSales.

I am hoping that it will be sold quickly as it really is ready to rock 'n roll.

As soon as it is sold I will come back to you and see if yours if still available but rest assured I am very interested.
As soon as the 'big bike' is gone I will come calling.

Neil, would it be possible for you to send a few digital photos of the bike to my email address:

waynelkerr@yahoo.com.au         (only if you can be bothered, no problem really)

thanks again.

Just as a follow up to this thread. I got my tyres fitted (Pirelli Angel GT's) on monday , spent most of the next morning cleaning and polishing and finally got to place the bike on the internet for sale. Link as follows:

That was wednesday and I sold the bike this morning for my asking price  :thumbs and it is going back home to right next door to the Gold Coast, where I bought it from in May this year.

The new owner is getting a great bike and I am sure he will have many happy travels on it.
