BMW R1200RT Service Costs
« on: October 19, 2019, 06:51:04 AM »
Info for prospective owners of an RT
The service interval on my RT is 10,000km and dealer service costs alternate between $350 for a standard service and $750 for a major service.  Every service has included software updates.
She's had the Standard 50k service yesterday, and now that my warranty period has expired, I'll probably be doing the standard service with oil and filter changes myself.

Tyre life, irrespective of what tyres are fitted, seems to be around 10,000km, which is much less than I expected.

Service intervals and costs seem on par with most major makes  :like, surprised at tire wear though, what would you get on the ST previously? On our trip west  the Dunlop roadsmart 3 tires have done 16000+kms with still about a mm left at the TWI.

Tyre wear is a shock, considering the Beemer is lighter than the ST.    I was getting up to 20,000km from PR4's on the ST, but got just 7,500km from a PR4 on my lap with the Beemer....   :eek      I am advised that the police get around 10k from whatever tyre they fit to the RT's.  I'm currerntly running Pirelli Angels which are supposed to give good mileage.

I’ve been logging wear on my Pirelli Angel GTs. The rear was installed at 26000km with 6.3mm tread depth. I can’t recall if this was to a wear indicator.

I just measured the wear at 35614km. Still 3.5mm to the wear indicator at numerous places around the Tyre.. I’m happy with that, though I might not make it to Tassie and back home.

I discarded my last Angel GT at 20000km with less than a mm left. Too flat on the centre and scalloped.

Wear on the front is a different story. Discarded the front Angel GT in Mackay last year after 8000km because of horribly uneven wear.
Replaced with a PR4 and managed 13000km.

My 30000km service which included valve check, cost me $885.

Pete, does the $350 include the fluids, filters and sundry other standard consumables for the service?
Cheers ... Mark

That price was all inclusive, no more to pay.   :thumb

Hey Pete... so long as you don't want to 'ride-it-like-you-stole-it'... and to stir the pot a bit... maybe give a thought to these numbers  175/55R17... just thinking that that type of tyre is giving us much better mileage on both Scarlett (ST13  205/50R17) and Silvia (MP3 250  145/70 R12)... Hi Pete, Tyres are always a good talking point. My 1200 that I bought in Jan this year had just had a set of PR4 s fitted. Done 1000k`s. I've put on another 5K since and I would guess they are at 70%, front looks new still. The owner was a Federal Police Officer working out of Canberra ( current ), and he preferred the Angels because they have a stiffer sidewall. Will be interesting with the next set that are used, more locally so to speak?  :o

BTW Looking seriously at the SA/NT ride that's on offer.

The Angel GT on the front of our 1300A was new at time of collection in July 18. As of yesterday the tyre has done 14,000 km and I would give it another 1000 km at most before replacement. On average about 2,000 km better than a Bridgestone on our 1100A

My 30000km service which included valve check, cost me $885.

My last major was $975, which included valves, all fluids, spark plugs and air filter.

I'm consistently getting 23,000 km out of PR4s, but I wear them until the rear hits the flat spot, not the wear bars.  The front always get changed at the same time, but has rubber left above the bars.  I just couldn't be bothered mucking about with more visits to the dealer, and anyway, it's the front that decides how every corner is tracking so it's important for it to have good sideways grip. The rear wears first because of the drive and the fact I brake more often with the rear (e.g. entering corners).
For the modern man who lives in the city, riding a bike might be one of the only ways to escape the humdrum monotony. To take off and ride. To be both at one with nature and one with the bike. To feel masculine. Adam Piggott
