Here is a link to a youtube clip of the latest progress on my steam engine.

Fantastic. I could watch stuff like that all day. :popcorn
-
Very nice. Lots of effort gone into that. ++
-
Impressive stuff. I have no idea how it all works but any one who can put something like that together (and make it work) has the right to be commended :clap
-
I have a small steam engine that my late father-in-law built from scratch. He finished the engine and partly finished the boiler before he passed away.
-
Always magic when you first connect air and it actually runs. WELL DONE.

Looks like you're making a shay loco

Note for stinkypete. I don't know how much you know about what you have. That boiler could be fired on anything. From a blow torch through all burners and wood and coal. It even has a superheater.

I really have no idea what I have, but at some stage I would love to have it finished and running, as tribute to the old fella.
-
That must have taken quite a lot of time and effort, awesome work mate :clap :clap :clap
StinkyPete,
Finishing your late father-in-law's project sounds like a brilliant tribute, good idea :thumbsup

Yep it's a Shay and it has taken three years so far.

Beautiful to watch. Just one question from someone who knows nothing about steam engines- what is the function of the reciprocating rod driving off the rear axle?

Will you be also taking the drive to the front bogie as seen as in this example?

Thanks for that pic, Alan- that's a spectacular example showing off Lorien Vale's miniature components in their real-life location.
I had never seen that propulsion system before.

Hi Bill That rod will ultimately drive a water pump to force water into the boiler against the boiler pressure of 100 psi when the train is travelling. A steam injector will do the same job when stationary. They are a very interesting gizmo as they use boiler pressure to force water into the boiler against boiler pressure by exchanging pressure for velocity. Look them up on google you will find the methodology very interesting.

Hi Allan yes the front "truck" will be driven as well. I was just celebrating the moment drive had reached at least one set of wheels. :runyay
There were four of these beasts in Standard gauge imported to NSW to haul shale oil from Newnes in the Wolgan Valley to the western mainline at Clarence. Hence my interest in them.
-
Here's a couple of Shays taken at Wolgan that I got off of dad. He used to work for NSW rail as a fireman before we moved to SA a little before 1960. Also have a few taken at Newnes

Long time since I have posted anything. But Here is a link to a clip taken the day my shay passed it final steam test. Enjoy.

Wow. That is so cool. I'm extra impressed because I haven't got a clue with anything mechanical.
-
Great work. Very impressive
-
Wonderful achievement. Looks like a fabulous tracks layout.
I deduce the brick is keeping the firebox door closed. Or is it weight for traction?
-
Les - Well done.

Yep its keeping the door shut. That problem has since been fixed. The Track is the "Hornsby Society of Model Engineers" track at Galston in Sydney. I am currently a member of that club as well as my home club in Mudgee as we don't have a boiler inspector in Mudgee.

Isn't it 7 1/4" gauge? bigger than miniature? three sets of stevenson is an achievemnt in any gauge, good stuff, well done

Well I guess miniature is a bit of a misnomer but what do you call it? It weighs abt 320 kgs.
More than an ST.

Guess it's relative to what you're comparing it to. It's miniature compared to the prototype but gigantic compared to say HO gauge which is bigger than N gauge.

Glad to see you got her up and running
-
That's very impressive Les. Well done. Until you put it up there, I had no idea of the mechanics of steam locos. Next time you're in Galston, PM me and I'll come over and say g'day.

Came across this thread and thought I'd post a few pics of a train I inherited from my brother... 8)
It runs on 5" gauge track...
He imported it from the UK and paid some ridiculous amount for it.
I guess its like most hobbies, someone thinks of a crazy price and then they double it or more... :crazy
I'm really not into model trains at all so one of these days I'll have to try and sell it. In the meantime it's stored in a cupboard.
Any takers??? :whistle

Here's a link to a video of one of these trains on the go.... https://youtu.be/bug-E2KyBa4 (it's not mine)
#Edit: swapped out the video link for a better one...
-
Given to power cord in second pic, I'm guessing it has an electric motor.
..... In the meantime it's stored in a cupboard.
Must be a big cupboard.
Any takers???
We have four grandsons (from 11 down to 2), and they would all love that, so would grandpa.
Just don't think I have a cupboard big enough.

Thanks for that, Les....I have glanced at that site previously but wasn't so sure it was still operational as no photos appeared.
But, in saying that, I just tried opening up an incognito window in Chrome and they decided to work so it must have been something to do with my browser settings... :thumbs
I guess the biggest problem for me is how much do I put on it, dollars wise... :fp :think1

Yes, it's electric...it runs off a car battery.
It's not as big as you may think, Michael...it's just stored in the bottom of our laundry cupboard.
Here it is...

That will give you an idea of pricing.
-
Cheers Bill... :beer
I almost choked when I saw the new price....from $3900! :H
I'm thinking of asking around the $1000 mark... :Wot thuh:
-
I'm thinking of asking around the $1000 mark
Ask for $2500, gives some wiggle room. Anything over 1000 is a bonus. If you ask for 1000 they will try for 500..
-
You're probably right, Brock... :thumb
I had that sort of thing when I was selling my brother's car, the Suzuki Burgman & the Kymco scooter.
Lost count of the times I was offered half the asking price. But , being a stubborn bugger I stood my ground and eventually got a price I was happy with for all of the vehicles. :grin
I figure it's pretty much a waste of time trying to sell it while this Covid 19 thing is happening...
It can just sit in the Laundry cupboard for a bit longer...unless of course someone feels like giving me a thousand bucks... :grin
-
wow thats super cool Russel. Denis.

Thanks Denis! :thumbs
