Replaced PR3 tyres on the ST for the trip.    :beer
Put a new set of PR3,s on because I was more than happy with them, hang on really well and seem to be wearing well.  :thumb
I measured the tread depth on the new rear as close to centre as I could  6mm, I measured the tyre I took off (approx 7500Klm)at the same place 4mm.  The reason I replaced them is I wasn't sure they would make the trip over and back, they probably would of.
Attached is a photo of the tyre I took off, there is a slight flattening on the centre line, still not too bad for a tyre with 7500Klm on it. :grin

Surprised you found the Shinkos to be slippery, Peter.  I thought they were supposed to be sticky and short lived.

I'd include Continental Road Attacks in the discussion.  I found them to be a good ride, but sold that bike after only putting a couple of thou on them.

I have had a good run from Metzeller Z6s on the 1100 and 1300, so can recommend them.

Walking along the line-up at the FarRide in Eungella I could see a high proportion of PR2 and 3.  Those guys know their gear, so I'd have to give Michelins a tick.
Hi Biggles, did you like the Conti road Attacks for the time you had the bike? I have Battleaxe   And not that impressed bad cupping after 8 k's ,I want a tyre that grips well in the corners,
Cheers Aj :blk13
Haven't heard many good things said about Bridgestones or Dunlops, but both have their fans.

When it's all said (and done), I'd have to agree I'd prefer reliable grip to longevity of distance.  And I'd have to say none of Z6s, Road Attacks or PRs have let go on me.  Then I don't push them in the wet- too big a sook to want to know how far they go before they let go!

Yep, I did like the Conti Road Attackss but when I went to get them for Ruby they were out of stock, so I got PR2s.  Happy with them, but I haven't pushed them in the wet.  They feel planted in the dry.  Haven't heard many good reports of Battleax.

My BT023s seem to work well for me. The rear has done around 10000 give or take and looks like it has a few thou left however I'll be putting a new one on before the Southern Cross run in September, mainly because it will be around 3500kms with a trailer. I only put new front on recently and I'm very happy with the handling (most of our rides involve up/down mountain ranges). I run 42psi rear and haven't had any bad cupping I run 38psi front.

The BT 23 I'm running now needs replacing after only 11000kms in four months, similar mileage to the Metzler and BT-21 and nowhere near the claimed 30 percent more mileage.

I've all ways ran 36psi/42psi as stated on the bike........120/70 front..........160/70 rear

I put my second Rear BT 23 trye on after doing just under 12000kms on 23/12/2011.

So far I've done 7600kms on the second rear BT-023 since xmas 2011 and it looks half warn so might do another 4000kms on. I replaced the front in March after doing just under 12,000kms so on mine the mileage is about the same both front and rear.

My set of Shinko Verges are about done after the Lightning Ridge FarRide.  They are 120/70 front and 170/60 rear. Grip and handling still fine, but a slight speed deceleration wobble has appeared for the first time ever.  I have worn these tyres right down (but still with tread!) as they have been very consistent over their life.  17,000kms so far which is at least 4000kms better than anything else I have tried.  For $220 the set from the US and fitted myself, not too bad.  The bike is cheaper to run than the car once tyre cost go down.

So of course a different set of tyres is going on next - my $50 clearance BT021 Bridgestone in 110/80 and a Shinko Raven in 170/60.  All up cost $130.  I know the BT021 did not get great reviews, but it will do what I want.  They shoulf get me to a decent pie shop and back at least...

I'm sticking with PR2 front and PR3 rear. (Maybe a 3 on the front if availability allows).

I have gotten around 25,000km out of 2 consecutive sets with NO REGARD to 'protecting my tyre life' whilst riding, but a METICULOUS approach to consistent tyre pressures.

No need to change as I find their handling better than what I have thrown at them so far - i.e. they stick like sh*t to a blanket!         :eek       :grin

Low noise and good wet weather confidence - Now I sound like an ADVERT!

This has been MY experience.

Metzeler for me too. Both front and back put on 12,000 k's ago and still ok. Handle great. Very happy with them.

I have some PR2s ready to go after the next set.  They had better be good as the Shinkos have been near the best I have used wet or dry, regardless of price.  I should have mentioned that they are a harder tyre so don't ride as plushly as some

Put a new set of tyres on in the last few days.  BT021 front in standard size (110/80-18) and Shink Raven (170/60-17) rear.  The pair cost $140.  The BT021 full price was arounf the $200 mark so for $50 on cleance was ok :0 The Raven matches the pattern reasonably well so that is why I went for it. As usually, new tyres feel great.  As the BT021 is superceded, and the raven only available from overseas, and update may not be of any use to anyone, but they will be at the NSW RTE and perhaps the Border run if they last.

Just fitted a pair of 023's in standard 1100 sizes.  The front went on easy but the rear was a bit of a bugger, seems like the side walls are pretty stiff.

Interesting to see the difference in height between a (new) 160/70/17 and a (worn) 170/60/17 - looks like roughly 3.5cm.  If you add 1cm due to wear on the 170 tyre, that's still about 2.5cm.  I'll be interested to see how these tyre sizes affect handling - but I can say the bike is noticeably easier to get on to the centre stand!

Should cut your RPM for a given speed, but not affect the accuracy of your speedo, assuming those figures are for the rear only.
As for getting STs on their centre-stand, don't get me started!  Even Goldwings are easier!

Yeah it will drop the revs, didn't think about that.  Won't affect the speedo (unless we're being pedantic!) as that's driven by the front wheel and that had a 110/80/18 on before.

Front wheel tyre size???

I had a dealer in WA swear black and blue that the standard tyre for my bike was a 110/80 and the only way I could convince him was showing him the tyre info on the frame that it was 120/70. Guess he hadn't seen to many A models.

I've just put a BT021 on the front and a BT023 0n the back, the old ones were just about knackered!.

Question, guru's:- The bloke in the tyre place told me that he thought 42psi was a bit hard for these and recommended 38psi in the front and 40psi in the back, saying that they would go up by 4psi when warm and he thought 46psi was over the top. I pointed out that Honda say 42psi front and back, but what is your opinion???

I have to order another set of BT23 in August from jake wilson as the rear is almost due.

After that I want to try Avons and I hope the deal is still available when I need them. About $400 delivered

so you are running a cross ply tyre with a radial tyre and you have been told they will be ok, not sure I would agree with that mixture

I got told the opposite a couple of tyre changes ago....run a couple more psi in both.  I still run what Honda says and I thought that was 36 front  and 42 rear for the 1100?

Scary when 'experts' tell people directly opposite things...I can only assume that the manufacturer of the bike knows best, and go with the pressures they recommend.

Well I have just crossed through the 26,000th km on my front PR2 and got 24,000km from the rear PR3 by putting 42psi front and 44psi rear with the suspension preload and rebound set fairly high (stiff). I don't reckon I'll be listening too hard to someone who tells me to change this set up.     |-i

I have NEVER ridden to try and CONSERVE tyres or petrol either.

Did I mention I regularly scrape footpegs and boots too? (Handling must be OK on this set up).       :thumbs

Keep in mind though - these are NOT the tyres the factory chooses to shoe her with - so you should really talk to the tyre manufacturer of the brand you are running and ask their recommendations for THIS tyre on THIS bike in THESE climate conditions.

OR...................

Be like good ol TerryDJ and just ride the damn thing as he has done successfully for decades without worrying too much on the hypocritical 'devil in the detail'     :thumb

Hope this helps.

It think it depends on what sort of riding you do and what type of roads you travel on.  I don't think you'll have any safety issues with the tyre by deviating 4 PSI from Honda recommended tyre pressures.  Personally, I find the recommended pressures too hard for anything except very good road surfaces.  When riding solo, after much experimenting I find that 38 PSI/front and 40 PSI/rear gives me a much more comfortable and planted ride on our crappy regional roads.  When 2 up, 40 PSI/front and 42 PSI/rear. No doubt it's accelerating tyre wear but I've never been obsessed with getting a million miles out of a set of tyres.....I just want to enjoy my ride!
