1300 tyres
« on: February 05, 2015, 05:44:37 PM »
O.k., due for a new set of tyres, and have decided on PR4's. However, the rear size for the ST1100 is pretty well impossible to get. I notice here that ppl have been putting on the ST1300 rear size.

My question is: has anybody had any adverse effects? E.g.: handling? Does the tyre, being wider, make the bike slower into turns? I would be using the `120/70 X 18 front, as that seems readily available.

Cheers

I assume it is a 96 on ABS so the front is correct size. I have used plenty of 170/60 rears on an ST1100 and could not really say it felt any different to a 160/70. You will have slightly more revs for the same speed, and it will be slightly harder to put on the centre stand. Both of these are no big deals for the advantage on being able to put on such a good tyre.

Sounds pretty good to me. I think I was basically more concerned about swingarm clearance, as the tyre is 10mm wider.

Gunna go for it!!

There's plenty of clearance for the 170/60 tyre between the swing arm but there's a minor hiccup if you have the ABS. You may have to angle the tyre slightly for it to go in past the sensor. I haven't noticed any side stand issues.

The wider tyre means slightly more grip on the road and I haven't noticed any difference in corning with the non-spec rear tyre.

I am running 1300 size PR4's front and rear on my 1100 and there are no issues at all. Awesome grip and very smooth. I mounted mine with the balance code at the valve and haven't had to balance them. Lent it to a mate to do a quick run down to town (50km) and he said they are great at 220kmh.

Just get the 1300 set in the GT version for best wear and handling.

Thanks for the replies. Now for prices. I might go the o/s route, as the savings seem very good, even with the crappy Aussie dollar.

I've just done some of that for mine

Angel GT spec about $AUD450 to my door ....bit less if you take off the balancing beads (at yesterdays rates)
PR4s in GT spec came to about $500 (last weeks rates)

plus your fitting costs
