Rear Tyre
« on: February 29, 2012, 01:56:15 PM »
Has anyone had experience with fitting a larger tyre to the rear on a ST1300? 180/55/17
I ordered some tyres from the US & stuffed up got the wrong size I'm told it will work on the ST1300 but not 100% sure
Any suggestions appreciated

I have heard of people using that size on ST13s.  Here is one thread, and it seems the revs per km difference is not much at all, so should not affect.  Now if you could easily use a 17" front rim there would be a world of tyre choices available.

Larger rear tyre shouldn't be too bad. It could be likened to adding an extra tooth to a rear sprocket.
The other side of the coin, Noel, it will wear out in 15 to 20k. Change it then. :thumbs

ST11 rear can take up to a 170 series rear tyre, but even some of the 170s are too wide to fit.

You've saved $100 at Brisbane prices.  Now you've just got to get them fitted for free.  $60 per pair here, unless you take the wheels in and buy the tyres from the fitter.
For the modern man who lives in the city, riding a bike might be one of the only ways to escape the humdrum monotony. To take off and ride. To be both at one with nature and one with the bike. To feel masculine. Adam Piggott

I got mine last week and fitted them myself..... :hatwave  no problems at all, Oh and the 180 fits nicely on the rear of my 1100.
I also had to replace the rear brake pads, got them from the gold coast and my risers and bullet lights arrived today so I fitted them as well.

What brand 180/55 rear tyre was that?  It would be good to know if one fits as they are readily available.  On mine a 170/60 just fits with a enough clearance on the right hand side, so it must be a narrow 180 methinks.

I also brought my Pilot Roads from Jake Wilson...............great price..............great service :thumbsup. I haven't fitted them yet though.  Also had a rear Dunlop Sportmax sent out at the same time as I needed that to match up with the Dunlop on the front.
Contrary to the opinion of many others I find the Dunlops great. I got over 17,000kls from the previous one. I've ridden our twisty roads in the wet many times and not once have I felt unsafe on the Dunlops. I've actually had other riders who I've ridden with complain about the road being slippery and their rear wheel sliding out, but I've never felt the Dunlops let go :-(((.

I took my rear wheel off myself and had the tyre fitted by a dealer..........cost me $25.00.............I still saved heaps on local tyre prices!! :)
There are many paths to the top of the mountain.....but we all need to find our own way!
