Brake recall
« on: September 10, 2014, 08:02:06 PM »
I read in the news yesterday that Goldwings numbering in the hundreds of thousands have been recalled apparently for the second time over "an issue with a secondary brake master cylinder"  which potentially leads to over heating rear calipers and possible fires.

Would this be the same master cylinder which is on the left hand front brake caliper of the ST1300?

When I changed the fluid in the brake circuit recently I noticed that particular cylinder was quite stiff and hard to actuate and I wondered at the time is it was functioning properly. I suspected that it might lead to rear brake drag.

Has anyone heard of this in St's or is it a different problem in Goldwings?

So far this is a US and Canadian issue.

A well-publicised recall is currently happening in North America, but it doesn’t affect Australia

The American and Canadian recall of particular models of the Honda GL1800 Gold Wing does not apply to the Australian market, Honda Australia has announced.

In December 2011, a safety recall due to a rear brake drag issue was announced for GL1800 2001-2010 models in America and Canada. It is important to note that there have been no reports of injuries or crashes related to this issue.

Currently, there have been no reported cases of rear brake drag in the Australian market.

While the cause analysis into the American failures is ongoing there will be no action within the Australian market. If as a result of the investigation into the cause of the symptom in the American market it is determined that Australian market is also affected, the appropriate action will be taken.

Affected local owners will be notified directly by Honda Australia if any action is required at a later date.

As for the secondary master cylinder between 1300 and Goldwing it would depend on how the system is designed. The 1300 uses the same/similar set up to the previous 1100A whereas the wing may be different depending on the model and year.

The current wing seems to be electronically controlled between front and rear (green from front LH to rear)

The 1300 does require the secondary master cylinder to be at a specific angle for bleeding where the 1100 can be left in place. Even the secondary on my 1100A is rather firm to move by hand and I have had no issues with brakes.

I found this which seems to indicate the system is the same type as the ST1300 but the secondary master cylinder is positioned differently on the caliper plus it has an antidive plunger.  Maybe that is the issue. The info I read said it was a problem with the secondary master cylinder.

The older 1800 wing and 1100A/1300A are similar in design and work the same but the LH calliper set up is different. On ours the front brake activates the two outer pots on each front calliper. The foot pedal activates the centre pot on all three callipers.

Any braking by either hand or foot on the front wheel causes the LH calliper to pivot and activate the secondary master cylinder which then activates the two out pots on the rear calliper.
