Title: steering issue
Post by: spanner on October 17, 2015, 03:00:53 PM
Well Gents and Ladies,

After my big ride to Sydney the steering issue became really REALLY apparent.

I can not let go the bars with out the bike wanting to go right.

I have correct tyre pressure.

My thoughts were when I changed the steering head bearings AND the fork seals and oil I stuffed something.

two things come to mind straight away that might be a culprit:

1/ I dropped the lower steering head bearing and it kinda bent it. It still worked well and was packed with grease and went in smoothly and when it was done up there was no grinding, clincking or catching when moving the steering back and forth.

2/  I did not have extremely accurate measuring device when filling up the fork oil. It said in the manual +/- XX mm so I went with the close enough ( and it was quite close) .

I have tried the undo XX bolts and YY bolts on the triple clams etc but these did not really do anything of great value.

Any advice on what I should look at next or do I need to reorder and replace the lower Steering head bearing or do I need to drain and refill (somehow) the fork oil with a much more precise measuring beaker?

Cheers,

Spanner

I believe there is a sequence to follow when refitting and tightening the front wheel. Also, the forks may be biased slightly right in the triple tree. You may need to loosen all the bolts and try adjusting the handle bars slightly to the right to correct it,. (this will cause a slight movement of the wheel back to the left I think, if it doesnt try the other direction.)

Did you move the piece which goes clamps each shock absorber?

My guess is when you pulled it apart to do the steering head bearings, you may have put a twist between top and bottom clamps.

It will only need a slight twist to put the forks off straight.
