Trailer Esky, what do you use?
« on: May 21, 2014, 07:59:47 AM »
Everyone seems to have a different Esky on their trailers, what do you use, and why? is it able to be tied down, how do you do it?

The glass one Abe is refering to used to be made by a company called Downunder at Slacks creek.......they used to offer factory seconds really cheap  WOW:

I bought our 80 ltr about 14 years ago from them.......new was then $350 paid $180 delivered, still have it and going strong.....light, seals well.......use to get 7 days from a 4ltr Ice cream container of ice providing the Icebox was kept off the ground with circulating air  :thumbsup

The factory seconds were generally slight bubble in the topcoat etc..... ;-*

I use a small hot / cold 12v esky that sits nicely in my trailer, I connect it to power via a 12v outlet in my taillight  cowell. Soon I will be rewiring my trailer plug to include a power source within my trailer, with power on with ignition. I keep milk, marge, water and when I remember to stop at a shop, meat to cook for dinner and left overs for tomorrows lunch.
It suits my needs when out and about    :thumbs

I use an IceKool 25 litre poly esky inside my trailer, it sits directly above the axle so the weight is balanced. I generally don't need to carry too much just some water and snacks and a couple of cold bevvies. Everything else packs in and around it nicely.

Our now much used and old esky used to be carried in the trailer but the new one due near xmas time will be on the draw bar once I get a plate or a rack made up for it.

We bought a couple of small ratchet straps (about 25mm wide) from one of those cheap discount stores which should be enough to hold the esky on.

To save space in the trailer I freeze up three of four 2 litre soft drink bottles of water which then becomes the water we need for cooking or for coffee etc

My Classic Trailer is fitted with one of their custom made ice boxes shaped for the trailer . . It works quite well, just need to obtain ice when necessary, when beginning the journey, I do the same as Alans1100 and fill some plastic bottles and freeze them. If I was making a trailer like you are I would seriously consider either a 3 way or 2 way powered frig/freezer, but it also depends on how much you would be using the trailer and of course the fridge can be used in the car/4wd . .

I agree with STroppy.
Buy an Engel or Waeco and carry it inside the trailer along with a 120amp deep cycle battery powered by the bike.
I had my trailer lid raised to to 500mm inside to accommodate the fridge.

As Lionel says, or you could build a lockable, vented box for the drawbar to accommodate a frig . . . Bear in mind that this will be heavier than an esky type and you will need to balance the load in the trailer to compensate . . . The advantage Lionel has with his setup is the frig is pretty much over the axle and good trailer balance . . Disadvantage is longer larger items may be harder to accommodate and the frig space should really be vented to operate efficiently . . . Lionel's may be vented . . I can't remember . .

Thanks Gents, I will only be using the trailer really when Teela comes with me, so an esky will suit fine, i would like the frdige, but that is something for down the track  :thumb so the esky will be more than sufficient

Graham we use an ICEY TEKI 25lt it will fit 3 x 1lt bottles across the bottom, we freeze one overnight in the camp Kitchen the previous one will be 1/2 melted and the third will be good and cold so we start using it and just keep grabbing a fresh one each day and into the freezer over night, done 25,000k of touring that way, Tassie, Darwin, Red Centre.   would do it any other way Light high tech construction and strong.
an Odyssey is "A Long Journey" and this Odyssey Rider loves doin' just that on my Honda ST1300
