Title: I love my Michelin PR3s...
Post by: BigTed on November 09, 2013, 03:34:59 PM
Hi folks, Earlier this year I reset the rubber on Little Miss STealthy due to the upcoming ride from Perth to the OzSToc National Rally in Middleton. The original Bridgestones were VERY done at 24,650km (front) and 26,739km (rear). From what I'd been reading, I was pretty happy - some hadn't made 20. Advice sought from this group and the shops had me grabbing a pair of PR3s off the self.

Attached are two photos taken this morning: front at 21,800km, and rear at 19,700km. It's a bit hard to judge, and I know it's like falling off a cliff when they get to the end of their life, but I reckon these are going to outlast the original Bridgies, possibly quite easily.

I'm very happy with them - both ride, handling, noise, and longevity.

Cheers, Rob.
PS. you can still see the flat spot on the front from the rally ride!

Bloody hell, I know the PR3's are a long wearing tyre but you must carry your bike everywhere on your shoulders to get that sort of mileage out of them. Your obviously a very conservative rider.

Diesel is the only other one I know who gets that sort of distance out of tyres. I would have push the bike a lot to get more than 15,000kms out of a set.

I'm on the good side of 50, but I do ride like my grandma used to drive. ;-)

:eek What IS amazing, is the milage you got out of the Bridgies. That would have to be a record without doubt. :-++
The all important question. "What pressures are you running?"

Indeed. I run the PR3s (and previously the BTs) on 42psi (real - after calibration). Interestingly, I only changed the tyre at the front after I collected the bike from its 24,000km service and the guy said it was dangerous. I had Middleton coming up, so I though - ok, time to change it anyway. I would have waited until the week before Middleton and changed it with the rear (+3,000km) otherwise. The rear still had a few thousand left of it (me thinks) when changed, but it wouldn't have got me to SA.

I never noticed any degradation in handling at all - quite likely due to my nanna-like riding style.

Cheers, Rob.

I've just pulled the trigger on my next set of PR3s on the 13. Haven't used anything else (cept PR2s).

Mileage: Current rear PR2 21,000km   :   Current front  29,000km

But I am pedantic about air pressures. I always get over 21,000km for my tyres - must have saved a fortune over the last 85,000 clicks.

For the neysayers, or people who are trying to make up their mind about which hoop to throw on - check this review on the PR3 ....

I'm also throwing in this balancing/ anti puncture compound this time round too....

The new Michelin Pilot Road 4: three different versions available from January 2014.

The Michelin Pilot Road 4 for sport touring, trail and GT bikes will be available in early 2014.
The new BMW R 1200 RT will be factory-fitted with the Michelin Pilot Road 4 GT.
Michelin has once again pushed the limits of braking. On wet surfaces, the new tyre’s braking distance is shorter than that of its main competitors.

In 2014 Michelin will bring to market an all-new range of motorcycle tyres, available in three versions: the Michelin Pilot Road 4, Michelin Pilot Road 4 GT and Michelin Pilot Road 4 Trail.

Intended for road use only, these tyres cover most categories of road motorcycles of more than 600cc.They were designed to deliver maximum safety in the most common conditions of use, especially on wet roads and in particular when braking.

Michelin will also be the tyre supplier for the new BMW R 1200 RT with the GT version of its new tyre. The fact that BMW has selected the Pilot Road 4 for this bike – the bestselling bike in its category – reflects the level of performance it provides.

In short, the Michelin Pilot Road 4 delivers enhanced safety in all situations and extended tyre life. They are a tangible illustration of Michelin’s Total Performance strategy of constantly and simultaneously improving tyre performance characteristics across the board.

With the Michelin Pilot Road 4 tyres, the aim is to enable as many motorcyclists as possible to experience safe riding in nearly all conditions.

None at all.  Probably the dealers won't know until they are released.  The PR2s and PR3s were around $420 a set where I buy them.  I'd be hoping the PR4s aren't too much dearer.  With a few manufacturers producing this line now it's competitive enough to prevent price gouging.

I would expect that they will replace the PR3s.  The Bridgestone T30s will hopefully be right up there performance wise to keep a lid on prices.

Here's an update... still quite a bit left too.   WOW:
And the new PR4s on order are meant to last up to 20% longer.  :grin :grin :grin :grin :grin :grin :grin :grin :grin :grin

Front @ 30,000km:

Rear @ 27,900km:

If you look at the rear - right in the middle just above centre - you'll see a little piece of metal adjacent to one of the finer grooves.... dunno what that is. The tyre's not losing pressure, so I'm not touching it until I have to (a new PR4 is on the way, and repair kit & pump is in left pannier).

I'll leave the mods to create a poll for my new name. I'll start with a few suggestions...

* Miss Daisey
* Hoke (Miss Daisey's driver)
* Captain Slow (as in James May)
* ...
Go on - have your fun!
Title: Uneven wear on my Michelin PR3 rear
Post by: John Meara on June 01, 2014, 06:05:19 PM
I just returned from 1,000 km ride via highways and many twisties, including Thunderbolts Way, Putty Road, Bylong Valley, Waterfall Way (but wet).  Ready for a service and checked rear tyre to find uneven wear.  Front is fine and should do (a usual) 2 rears for same distance).  Here is a photo (taken this evening) of the rear PilotRoad 3:

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/John_Meara/OzSTOC/RearTyre_zpscf5b92cc.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/John_Meara/media/OzSTOC/RearTyre_zpscf5b92cc.jpg.html)

Left side top & bottom of photo are of the left side.  Right side a lot worse.

Suggestion or comments?   I reckon its the road camber.   Just checked my records.... These tyres (front & back) have done an amazing 17,500 kilometres!   Cannot complain, so I think another one just the same to replace it.

Hi John,

That picture in the middle shows an identical wear pattern to the rear of a set of Pirelli Angels I had at 15000.

I thought I would get one last 700 kay ride out of them but they died completely on the trip.

Dr Google was ambivalent with any number of vague causes but nothing definitive.  I asked an number of "experts" about it but no one could give a reason.

Or maybe they were too polite to suggest crap riding!
Title: Re: I love my Michelin PR3s...
Post by: Diesel on June 01, 2014, 10:11:37 PM
I am also devastated to report an identical wear pattern on my PR3s. For some reason, mine are totally shot at 11,000km this time round.      :||||

All this on the back of previous bloating about 18-24 thousand km distances from my rear PR3s. I'll have to examine this more closely, but somehow have a niggling idea that I just did a lap of the Oxley Hwy with a slightly under pressured rear tyre which rapes 1,000s of kays off your mileage.

I have NEVER had uneven wear - but my current rear tyre, very much resembles John's tyre...     :o

Open to suggestions about the reasons for this if any members have experienced the same... Lost 10,000 kms from this tyre.      :think1

Apart from the camber of our Australian roads, the only other thought might be uneven weighting on the bike (not being centred), although I doubt this.

Possible evidence of significant camber effect is when I have the cruise control set and I take my hands off the grips and handlebar, I find I have to sit with a little more weight (shifted) to left in order to keep the bike running straight down a road.  I assumed this was to counter the camber, i.e. keep the bike leaned slightly over to the right (counter-balancing my weight to the left) would cause it to turn slightly to the road centre.

Any PRs you buy now will be PR4s, unless they're old PR3 stock.

How was your tyre pressure during your 1000 kays, John?
Title: Re: I love my Michelin PR3s...
Post by: John Meara on June 02, 2014, 08:33:13 AM
Tyre pressure on rear was 42.   The wear pattern was somewhat evident before the trip, but this finished it off.

I had the ST serviced today, plus fitted 2 new PR4 GT's. Check the difference in the pic: Rear PR3 worn, rear PR4GT new, front PR3 with a few thousand Ks still in it, front PR4GT new:

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v681/John_Meara/ST1300/MichelinPR4GTs_zps7573509a.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/John_Meara/media/ST1300/MichelinPR4GTs_zps7573509a.jpg.html)

On close inspection of the front when I arrived at Pro Honda to drop it off, the tread wear was not as it seemed to me in the subdued light of the shed without my glasses on!  It wasn't far off the wear lines.  This confirms what I used to get - about 20,000 km from a front (twice the rears). I paid $207 for the front and $290 for the rear (fitted). They feel very nice initially, so let's see how they go over the long haul.

My previous PR3 rear wore badly on the right.  My bike mechanic puts it down to road camber and under inflation.  The current PR3 have similar right side wear and at not quite 11000 km, 7000 or which Tas to Alice Springs (return two up).  Tyre pressure checked, probably not as regimental as I should and found to be 4 psi low.  I have tyre checkers that indicated pressure was OK.  Gets ridden with gusto around Tassie roads.

I'd put it down to my pillion sitting off centre to lQQk over my shoulder.  but seeing other tyres with the same unusual wear on the right side mayB they made a few bad ones.
I now have a PR4 on the rear, and I hope I can get double the K's.. my front will need replacing soon its a PR2 with apx 16,000K's..and PR4 will B next  ++

Not much left now... but hey - winter's nearly over so maybe I can run them as slicks for a while and see out the summer.  ;-*

There is quite a bit of cupping, but I think that's largely due to me forgetting to check the pressures: they got down to 37, now back to 44 psi.

18,000 is actually pretty good for Bridgestones.
Plenty of riders report less.

But you won't regret the PR4s.  And I think the money is about the same.

Hi

Just got home from my 16,000km round trip, I had a set of Michelin Pilot Road 3 fitted just before I left.

I have done east- west four times now 3 on my DL1000 other on my ST1300 but I know 16,000km is nothing to sneeze at Its just I never seen so much uneven wear on one side of the rear tyre before.

Is this normal for a shaft drive bike or just normal for PR3's.

Long hours on the bike, combined with road camber, maybe slightly under inflated and a strong is sidewind thrown in maybe...

I've been following this discussion for a while and was all set to get a set of PR4's but apparently none in Australia and dealers have no idea when stock will be arriving.  Given that rear is down to wear marks I thought I'd check out Jake Wilson but came across this in the fine print:

Please note:

Items that include, but are not limited to: Chemicals, Batteries, Attack Graphics, Oversized and Heavy items such as: Tires, Fenders, Full Chassis Skid Plates, Loading Ramps, Nerf Bars, Bumpers, Trunks, Snowplows, etc. are excluded from international shipping.
Also, certain brands or product lines cannot be shipped internationally due to vendor restrictions.
[/i]

Has anyone been able to source tyres from USA recently (I notice Saaz got some a while ago)?

Any comments/guidance greatly appreciated!

Cheers :think1

More likely it's our local wholesalers supported by some tyre companies. I did read something about this a year or two ago where some tyre companies look at where their profits come from on a regional basis and others look at a global level and don't care to much where the tyre is sold and to who (free market???).

This will be my last update for the PR3s – wear bars have just started showing in some places both front and rear. Interestingly, the right side of both seem to wear the fastest. People say it’s the camber in the road, but I’m surprised it would make that much of a difference. Also, if you look closely, you can see what appears to be join in the lamination of both halves of the tyre.

As usual most probably due to my riding style, I can't really say I've noticed anything different in handling.

I'm fitting the front PR4 next weekend, and the rear probably the weekend after that.

That's phenomenal mileage, Ted!  Can only envy it.  I'm happy with 2/3 of that.

Regarding the uneven wear issue, my preferred theory is that riding on the left side of the road, it's further around RH corners than it is around left, therefore we're leaned over to the right longer.  It's not much taken as a percentage of the tyre's travel, but it's enough to make the difference.  The 2o of road camber isn't enough to do the deed across 30o of tyre profile.

This will be my last update for the PR3s

Big Ted, 35,000km is truly remarkable.  I was pretty pleased with my own 22,000 from a set of PR3's, and I think Diesel managed around 27,000km.  There may be lessons to be learned here for all of us.    What pressures do you use, and to what do you attribute your long tyre life?
Title: Re: I love my Michelin PR3s...
Post by: BigTed on November 17, 2014, 09:33:58 AM
Thanks Biggles & Pete,

44psi both front & rear. However, I don't check the pressures as often as I should (only every 3-4 weeks) - I usually have to put about  3 pounds in the front & about 6 in the back.

Looking at one of my previous photos there appeared to be a little object in the rear that may have caused that.

However, I'm convinced it's my riding style that had greatest effect. I'm a bank manager's son at heart & therefore a tight-fisted w***er through 'n through... I rarely fang it through the corners, always gentle on the throttle, & stick to the speed limits. I also never go 2-up.

Of course, it might be that I'm just lucky - hopefully I'll get the same or better from the PR4s.
Rob.

It's not necessary to ride hard and fast to enjoy riding a bike. The mileage that you're getting out of your tyres is truely amazing, I've recently fitted PR2s to my bike and as yet have only travelled a couple of hundred kms but so far they feel great. The only reason I fitted PR2s is because I purchased them a couple of years ago before PR3s came out from Jake Wilson in the US and I've had them sitting in my garage since then. I previously had Dunlops and was happy with them as far as handling goes, but I never came anywhere near what you've been able to attain. I try to keep my tyre pressure at 42 psi but occasionly I'll ride with a couple of pounds less pressure, simply because I've been a little slack in checking the pressure, but I've never ridden with less than 39 psi.

I have a set of PR3s with about 5000 kays on them. A guy who would supposedly know was looking at them and said I had cold tearing on the edges.  He said I should run the tyres at lower pressure to heat them up more.

I have been running them 42 front and rear like the manual says and I don't ride particularly hard,  although just prior him seeing them I had a bit of a fang, well a lot of a fang through some of my favourite half dozen corners near home.

I know the tyre pressure thing has been done to death but would a half dozen high speed corners do that?

Pictures might help, I havent heard the term before.

If it looks like this, then I would think that the tyre is under inflated and overheating. I have seen tyres like this after guys have been to a trackday.

a half dozen high speed corners do that?

That's the softest part of the tread and I've had some BT 23 rears do that within the last 1000 km of the tyre's life. Taking 85 k/h bends at 100/110 k/h did that for me on at least two of them.

Pressure may have been down a little and tyre got to hot and the rubber just melted off while gripping in the bends might be a better reason.

Keep in mind peoples, that if you are putting on 42 psi front and rear because "the manufacturer said to" then you should be running the OEM Bridgestone tyres that were originally fitted to the bike!  Other than that? You need to find the sweet spot on your Michelins, Pirellis or Dunlops yourself as they are a totally different kettle of fish. Even then,  Honda would have used a carefully calibrated air gauge,  so be careful out there villains.

I run 42/44 by MY GAUGE. This could equate to different numbers on your gauge, but the PR3/PR4 GT combo at these pressures feel great.

Beatup might vouch for their handling performance. ;-)

Rob.

If you get that amount of km out of a set of tyres because you are gentle on the throttle, and stick to the speed limits
I would be interested to know what average and best fuel economy you can achieve riding like that  :popcorn :popcorn :popcorn

I'm getting between 18 & 19 km/lit based on my fuel log (not the gauge)...

Ps. That's mostly suburbs to city freeway commuting in Perth of about 30km each way.

For those that may want to keep an eye on their fuel usage, I have posted a link below.

The page with the date (2015) is for entering fill data, Fuel 2015 will give you all the stats. To start put current odo reading in the first Kms cell on the Fuel 2015 page, and start with a full tank.  enter the next fill on the 2015 page, and the fun starts.

Any problems let me know and i will fix it. I have been using this spread sheet for years.

I still use a spreadsheet out of habit, I also use the www.fuelly.com (http://www.fuelly.com) site but since Jan this year I've been using this https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.sweypro.driverdiary&hl=en (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.sweypro.driverdiary&hl=en) on both Samsung Tabs (one each for car and bike). This is the free app but there is a "pro" that you gives you more features if you wish to buy it.
