PR6s are here
« on: February 02, 2022, 11:36:49 AM »
Fans of the Michelin Pilot Roads will be intertested to hear they've reached their 6th iteration.  I ordered tyres on Monday and my guy says they were due for release yesterday.  He's waiting for his shipment.

Looks like they have gone back to the earlier PR4. Certainly see the DNA in them>

The Beemer is due for a new set of tyres, and I may consider these.    Some users have reported low mileage from the "Road 5's", and the dealer that I spoke to advised that the "Road 6" claims better wet handling, more grip, and longer life.   I reckon every tyre manuacturer says that about every new tyre that they bring out.

Any experience out there on the life of the Road 5's compared to the Road 4's??

I’m a fan, though I’m not due for a new set yet.  The 5’s have been terrific in cornering but noisier than the 4’s.   I’ll be interested in your views once you give the 6’s a run.

Got them today.  There's a name change- now just Michelin Road 6 CT+  $555 fitted by da Man.
I'll also be interested to see if they're quieter.

https://nsmctyres.com/michelin-road-6-road-6-gt-sport-touring-tyre-range/

I'm not sure about the "GT" designation in his link, because it isn't found on the tyre or in the road test:
https://www.tyrereviews.com/Article/Michelin-Road-6---Launched.htm

Here's the history (and I've had all of them):
- 2002   MICHELIN Pilot Road – the first Road tire range
- 2007   MICHELIN Pilot Road 2 – the first Road tire range featuring sipes
- 2014   MICHELIN Pilot Road 4 – the first Road tire range with a dedicated GT version
- 2018   MICHELIN Road 5 – the first Road tire range using 3D sipe technology

It looks like they dropped the "Pilot" on the 5s and I didn't notice.

My current ST13 came with new Pirelli Angel GTs and gave me 17,600 km.
The PR5s I put on gave me 17011 km.
I used to always get 23,000 km and I was blaming the Pirellis, but this is looking like the new norm.  I suspect it's because my riding has had a much higher percentage of pillion kms than previous tyres that had more FarRiding solo kays.

As I'm no lightweight and with Sue being no skinny mini I figure a "GT" may be better suited on the rear of my ST.

Unfortunately the GT's don't come in a 170/60R17...  :||||

They do do a 180/55R17 though which, assuming there's enough clearance width wise, would probably be okay.

The lower profile means the 180/55R17 is actually slightly smaller (diameter wise) than the 170/60R17 but the difference is minimal...see below:

Has anyone fitted a 180/55R17 tyre to their ST???  :popcorn

I have a 180/55 pirelli on my st at the moment and there is plenty of clearance. Left getting tyres to late and that is all that was avail. Haven't noticed any diff in handling, but there are a few more mm on the side of the tread that I am not using now. Pref the pr4gt that i was running, but i pref the pr4s over the angels anyhow. (Seem to wear more evenly). Will be interestng to see what the pr6 are like :-)

I gave the Road 6s a good run on Saturday and am delighted to report that they are much quieter riding upright and don't make that loud hum when cornering that the Road 5s did.  So now to see if I can get more than 20 thou out of them.

I'm sure I've told you a million times not to exaggerate.  However I do have a couple of longish rides in the near future now our warders have opened the gates (at least, on the East).

The weekend before last I did a FarRide to Bathurst to nab the FarTreasure.  The round trip over two days was over 2000 kays and the tyres were fine.  They are definitely quieter than the PR5s.  They still "sing" when leaned over, but not as loudly.  I did 400 last weekend and am off to Canberra for the weekend, so will start to get an idea about their wear.  Regarding grip, I haven't tried them in rain, but they hold on well on wet tar.  I had a lovely time on the New England Highway north of Tamworth swinging through the 85kph corners at 100 with Rubina purring her heart out tracking a mobile radar van who was doing the GPS 100.   :cop

OK- had plenty of opportunity to try them in the rain on the way here yesterday.  It was hissing done between Coffs Harbour and Nabiac- two big storms with scary thunder.  No one was driving above 40kph in the worst of it, so aquaplaning was on the cards.  They held on well. Once it settled into steady rain I noticed they were a bit noisier, presumably because the sipes were working hard pumping water. No dramas in the bends on very wet concrete, which is a real test- not much friction available there.

Having ridden my K1200RS on PR's from PR2 to PR5 I finally got tired (no pun intended) of not getting more than 11-12K out of a rear and a bit more on the front, my local tyre shop recommended the GT variant which has a stiffer side wall but the same tread compound. the first thing I noticed was an improvement in handling due to the reduced sidewall flexing as the GT is stiffer in that area so with less flexing less heat is generated hence better milage, so if you ride on PR's talk to your trusted tire dealer about switching over to GT's
If you are wondering why a BMW rider is here it is because my recently purchased ST1300 arrives up from Melbourne tomorrow

Yep- bikes that weigh as much as STs require the GT variant.  I'm surprised your previous suppliers didn't know that.  I think my throat has been cut if I get less than 20,000 kays out of a pair, but then, I do dawdle.

Just back from a 4250km weekend in Canberra.  That brings up 7774km and both look as good as new!
