Santa Bought Me an Early Xmas Present...
« on: November 23, 2022, 05:44:56 PM »

No, not another ST!

He bought me a "motorcycle dolly" which should make things a bit easier when it comes to manoeuvring the mighty ST in my single car (bike?) garage.
An hour or so bolting it all together and then it was all ready to use...  :runyay

Yes, a little easier moving the ST1300 around the garage, a little easier with a castor wheel upgrade - going from 50mm diameter to 75mm diameter.  At $55 for the upgrade, it makes the $150 for the motorcycle dolly look positively cheap.

Is that something you've tried, Michael?

I'm thinkin' with the larger castors that would actually make it slightly harder to run the bike up onto it.
Also, I can see another potential issue...the lever at each end lifts the castors slightly off the ground so when you run the bike up onto it the dolly doesn't move forward...with the increased wheel size I suspect that will now not work...  :think1

Thanks for the suggestion though!  :thumbs

Yes, but a little bit of trial and error, read on ...

I'm thinkin' with the larger castors that would actually make it slightly harder to run the bike up onto it.

I found it a little difficult with my shortish legs having to stretch out on tippy toes to support the ST on the dolly and needed to run a 40 mm planks (thicker than necessary) each side.  The extra 12-13mm height would have been more problematic, but okay with the planks.

Also, I can see another potential issue...the lever at each end lifts the castors slightly off the ground so when you run the bike up onto it the dolly doesn't move forward...with the increased wheel size I suspect that will now not work...  :think1

A couple of sturdy G-clamps (from a tool bin in the garage) applied to diagonally opposite castor wheels keeps the dolly from moving.

Sounds like too much mucking around for me...  :think1
I think I'll just stick with the standard castors for the moment and see if they do the job.
As the concrete in my garage is nice and smooth I'm not anticipating too many issues with the smaller wheels...and, at the end of the day the dolly will probably only get used when I'm looking for a bit more room for some projects etc.

Thanks again for the suggestions though!  :thumbs
