Bike only, or 4 wheelers as well?
« on: June 11, 2012, 05:20:34 PM »
The Ride to Work thread made me wonder - what vehicles do you have at home?

I just have my bike, so I ride it pretty much every time I go somewhere.  My wife has a car though, so I can use this if I need to and she doesn't need it.

Much as it would be nice, I reckon life would be inconvenient without access to 4 wheels.

I plan on adding another bike to the garage at some point, maybe in 18 months or so.

Obviously, that will be an ST1300.  Just a matter of choosing a colour now.
For the modern man who lives in the city, riding a bike might be one of the only ways to escape the humdrum monotony. To take off and ride. To be both at one with nature and one with the bike. To feel masculine. Adam Piggott

I have my ST1300, which I ride most days, plus a VY Commodore which holds the floor down in the garage and only gets used when I need to go shopping or it's belting down with rain outside. I don't find it fun to have to suit up at 6.30 on a wet morning for a 10 minute ride to work. If I ride to work and it rains while I'm at work, that's different :p

Ruby   :13Candy rules the roost, but has to share with the Camry sportivo.

Missus Biggles takes the Camry to work, so when I go out, it's the bike that is called upon.  Most of the time these days when we go out together, it's the cage that is called upon, since Missus B has a dodgy hip/knee and finds the bike a bit of a task for more than a short run.

As well as the wonderful ST my wife has a Honda Civic Si and there is also a Toyota Camry Altise in the garage which is there for when the heavens open. I agree with you Peter, rainy cold mornings at the crack of sparrow f**t are no fun, so I roll out the Camry for those rare occasions when I can't be bothered to run up like Nanook of the North.

Mate, I'm not surprised they love you if you pay rego on all those!!  Ever thought about trimming the fleet down to the ones you ride every week, for instance?

In our house we have

2004 Commodore Wagon
2008 Voltzwagon Caddy
1996 Honda ST1100

Wagon and Caddy get used 90% for work, and the bike is play and work to, wish I could use the 2 wheels more, but work and kids are not so friendly to it.

I was bike only till I was 28 the Missus was due with our first so I had to get a car licence, but that was a long time ago. These days I drive my VZ ute to work most days as it only takes me 5 mins hardly any traffic so by the time I get my gear on I'm there in the car th occasionly I'll take the bike.
But with the Missus' WK stato my ute the ST & it's trailer as well as our caravan, Rego's & Insurance keep the bank balance light

You are right Biggles, try 4.8 litres/100ks for the ST against 15-16 litres/100ks around town with the ST having similar performance and much more fun.

I just filled today after a long CMA ride.  550 km with 27.94 litres at the bowser, Standard Unleaded, riding two up, including all of Esk- Crows Nest via Perseverance Dam and right over Mt Glorious and Mt Nebo.  I say that to show it wasn't just bowling down the slab solo, the bike was working pretty steadily all day.

Don't need no Premium.  Don't want no "mileage extender".  Still the OEM aircleaner after 29,300 km (I'd better have a look at that).

ST1300s have 29 litre tanks.  I think there is 0.5 unusable.  Would have liked to ride it to a stop- I carry a 1 litre tin of petrol in the pannier, just in case.  Had to use it once.

Up untill 6 months ago only had the bike.
Rode home from a site up North in  a thunderstorm for 2 days in December and when I got home the lady said maybe I should get a car??? So I got myself a Statesman with all the gear and a DOOF DOOF in it. Last 2 jobs have been FIFO (Fly in fly out) so basically the car stays in the car park at home
