ST1300 Battery
« on: October 22, 2012, 04:13:19 AM »
On Friday morning I was getting ready to go to work, got all my gear on and jumped on the bike, and that was when I got a rude surprise…
The battery didn’t have enough power to start the motor :||||

Anyway I rode the cruiser in to work and started to look around for a new battery.
(Battery for the ST1300 is YTZ14-S)

1.   Battery World: quoted just under $250 for a Yuasa
2.   Repco: said they only have a couple of motorbike batteries and none of them would be suitable.
3.   Supercheap: quoted $440 for the Yuasa :eek :eek :eek and said they would have to order one in.
4.   Batteriesdirect.com.au: quoted (+ $15 delivery) $228.65 for the Yuasa or $117.78 for a SSB… I called them to find out what the difference between the two brands was.
He said the price difference is due to just the brand name and that the SSB actually has higher Cold Crank Amps at 285 as opposed to 230 for the Yuasa.
5.   Turbo Batteries: quoted $123 for another brand (I forget which one :fp)
6.   Allpurposebatteries.com.au: quoted $95 with free delivery for the SSB.

So that was prices worked out (All Purpose Batteries the winner :thumb:think1 the next step was to work out if the issue was the battery or the alternator.

When I got home from work I had RACQ around to test my battery and alternator… >:()
Battery was stuffed, alternator was good producing a solid 14 volts.

Had a chat to him and he said the battery must have been on the way out for some time but as I ride almost every day it wouldn’t have been as noticeable. (I hadn't ridden for a few days as I had stuff to do around the house and didn't get a chance to ride)

So at the end of all that, I went for the SSB from www.allpurposebatteries.com.au for a saving of $155 from the original quote of $250 :thumbs

I made the order late Saturday so will update when I receive the delivery.

Cheers

I can’t wait for the battery to arrive… it’s only been a couple of days but I miss riding the ST (even if it is only to work and home)

I got a battery from 'All Purpose Batteries' back in march for tht ST1300 it was purpost to be a complete sealed unit. when it turned up it was a add acid battery. I rang them and he said this is the way they transport them  :cuss.
Anyway I put acid in and charged it overnight. I put it in bike and no go. I pulled it out and took it to a battery place and they said it was "NO GOOD" so I sent it back 'at my expence'. For them to say it was no good but they would not send a refund as this was not there policy. Even though I believe they sent the wrong Battery. They never evan sent a credit slip
:cuss    " SO I have placed them in the do not deal with list"  :cuss
I then went to Battery World and bought a Yuasa which I should have done in the first place. As I was heading off on a 5,000Km Ride to the Ulysses AGM in Mildura the following week

I hope you have better luck than I did

The ST13 supposedly has a slightly undersized battery that what it needs, so looking after it is crucial.  Many of the 'sealed' batteries do come with the acid separately, including the normal Yuasa replacement battery.  There are other batteries that are sealed from the factory, Yuasa now make some and I have a Dekka that comes that way.  There are so many battery brands around at wildly vary prices that it can be confusing. Sometimes the cheaper batteries can be just as good as ones twice the price, and cheap and expensive ones can just fail.

I'm in the market for one myself shortly I think. It's getting a bit slow to crank. It's been in for 3 & 1/2 years. It was a cheap one, an Aero for $95 from memory.
I was actually out on a ride when my last one failed. Pulled in for fuel and wouldn't start. I was told that they are designed to collapse when they get to a certain point so as not to stress the electrics with low voltage or something. BROCK ????
Anyways, let me know how you go Shiney but I was going to ring around locally as I thought I might carry one with me on the weekend, but in the top box, not on my back, alar HarieG style.

Skip, if you’re after a local place "Turbo Batteries" are located in Brendale.
They quoted $123 and have YTZ14-S batteries in stock (I just can’t remember what brand they supply)

Anyway I will update when I receive the battery from All Purpose.

Posted here once before about batteries and said that I had just got a new Gel one.
Trouble was the experts said that their were no Gel batteries for bikes, even though the one I had said it was Gel, the company said it was Gel and the shop flogs them off as being Gel.

I would recommend getting a Gel Battery cause I'd get another one for sure if the one I have gave up the ghost??????
Just don't tell anyone, that's all

I think some places call them gel, but they are actually AGM (absorbed glass matt) or VRLA fully sealed batteries from the factory.  True gel batteries are more for deep cycle use (eg powering stuff for a long time) rather than for starting an engine due to the way they are constructed - power delivered over a period of time rather than in bursts needed for starting.

If you really want to read up on batteries have a look at this http://www.batteryfaq.org/ as it has more information than you really need.

Shiney,

I got the very same battery from the same place and it's turned out to be a good buy. It came ready to use. I didn't actually use it for about 4-5 months, that's when my original battery died. I put it in and fired the bike up, no charging done, and it's been sweet ever since.

Dave that’s awesome news, :thumb I was starting to worry that I had purchased from the worst place around after reading Leo’s trouble with them :-[

From the sound of it they might be a company to only order non-acid batteries from. >:()

Thanks again guys :hatwave

Quoted $103.10 for an AGM from my local STealership today. Even had one in stock. Haven't picked it up yet so can't verify that it is indeed an AGM. Its on hold for me though. Will confirm later in the week.
Cheers.

From memory I think they said it was a Power Volt and from Brisbane Motorcycles Caboolture. I'm sceptical about it being a AGM for that price but I'll let you know for certain after I've been to collect.

The Motobatt AGM for my 1100 was only $75.00 from the local battery place. The AGMs seem to be a lot cheaper than lead acid types. Have Motobatt AGMs in two other bikes too.

Battery arrived yesterday :hatwave
The order was processed on Monday and arrived at my house by courier on Wednesday :thumb

Removed the old battery (took a photo side by side with the new one :wink1)

Installed the new battery, :think1 wow, the starter turnover is much faster now and the bike is running well :runyay

So at this point it is doing as any battery should :) and my dealing with www.allpurposebatteries.com.au was trouble free.

Thanks for reading all, I hope all the info will come in handy for anyone else that finds themselves needing a new battery :grin

Was the Battery you recieved a fully sealed from fatory, because if it is which I suspect he lied to me when he told me that because of travel you add the acid later. I think they were out of the fully sealed one and just sent me the other. But it still doesn't explain why the one I received was a dud. I'm glad you got a good one

Leo,
The battery I ordered and received is factory sealed and liquid free (no acid)

I’m not sure if they send acid batteries without the acid in the battery >:() (a strange thing to do to a factory sealed battery I would think :well) but as you say they may have just sent you the non-sealed battery :fp

So for people after an “acid free” battery I would say they are a mob to consider :thumb… but if you are after an "acid" battery it could be better to look elsewhere :phone
