cheers

was two until recently now sits at three.

Read an earlier post that seemed to suggest that it may be less than good if it sits at two or less. Something along the lines that the bike may not be running as efficiently as it might.
 Couldnt understand the logic.

Actually exposure it in very cold weather (<1 °C) down south. 1 bar and occasionally less. The fuel consumption went up by quite a bit. 2 bars was normal otherwise and occasionally 3 on very hour days at around 37 °C

My ST1300 has always sat on 3 bars, irrespective of the ambient temperature.

My ST1300  has sat on 3 bars from the day I picked it up.  Like Pete's bike the temperature does not change for summer or winter.

I agree with the last 3 posters- 3 bars regardless of ambient temps.
For the modern man who lives in the city, riding a bike might be one of the only ways to escape the humdrum monotony. To take off and ride. To be both at one with nature and one with the bike. To feel masculine. Adam Piggott

Hmmm In looking back at old photos, I correct my previous post, 3 bars is normal (just above the 1 in the 19 °C in the photo below. This photo was within 5 to 10 minutes of start up, on the way home from work). Most times it barely moved, but I did have some of behavior in extremes.

The centre mark on the Guage.  I haven't looked at a temp Guage on an ST for a while.

The thermostat is there to ensure the temperature of the engine under normal running conditions does not vary due to ambient temperature variations and the engine will heat up to correct running temperature quickly, reducing wear. Your engine wears most when it is first started cold and is below designed operating temperature. Engine oil is designed to run within a certain temperature and viscosity range according to the engine design. This ensures the viscosity of the oil is correct due to its designed running temperature. A faulty thermostat will result in the engine running outside its designed temperature and oil viscosity optimum which can result in higher wear and poor performance. The old days of running an engine without the thermostat as it didn't matter if it was there or not is false thinking and your wallet will pay the price sooner than later.

Always 3 bars once warmed up and I've had the bike since new in 2003. I did change the thermostat many years ago because it would take a long time to warm up in Canberra's winter mornings and that helped for quite a while but eventually went back to the previous longer warm ups. Best solution to the problem was moving from Canberra's winters to a more moderate climate :).
Even on hot days stuck in traffic the temp gauge never goes over 3 bars even though the fans are cycling on and off.
