Electronics Cruise Control
« on: November 14, 2013, 08:44:09 AM »
Now that I have a near New ST1300 I was thinking about fitting a Electronic Cruise control
I am currently using a BRAKEWAY throttle that I got of Yorkie a while ago that works well
I had a electronic one fitted on my Kawasaki GTR1000 from Motorcycle Cruise Control here in Australia and it worked very well
this was a vacuum type. I was looking on US st-owners site and they have a fully Electronic one.
I know all ST riders that I have talked to have the MCC type but would a fully Electronic one be better ?

That is the current model that Lionel has on his ST1300. It still uses the vacuum cannister, but operates very well.  I am still using a hand me down McCruise off Lionel's original ST1100, and it also works very well.  Who knows how far that ones gone!  It will last the life of the bike.

McCruise were looking into fully electronic units, but the disadvantage might be the size of the unit.

The Rostra units are popular in the US, and I can see why at the price they sometimes can get them at.

PART ONE OF TWO

I have just asked that same question and this is the reply (one of):-

Hi Dave,

We hadn’t planned on upgrading the ST1300 kit with our new electric servo as the new software delivers virtually identical performance from the vacuum servo we have used since 1997, however if there is demand for such a product we can revisit it.  The only significant advantage will be the ability to adjust the cable interface unit to servo cable free play without having to take the tank off or air box.  That is a pretty substantial advantage on the ST1300 and FJR1300s however, so  I will bounce this off my partner tomorrow.  However we expect an F6B to come in late this week for development, so we may not be able to get to updating the ST1300 for several weeks.  We also have a backlog of development for the DL650 2013 model, Rewaco and Panther Trikes and I want to get a KLR650 in as well.  Too much to do and not enough time to do it in!

Nonetheless we will get back to you tomorrow with an answer.

Here are the complete instructions for the existing ST1300 kit.  The only change would be the servo, but we will have to make new mounting brackets and that usually means obtaining a bike – not easy to do quite often.

PART TWO:-

Hi Dave,

I have spoken in detail to my partner about this, but it is clear that it is pretty difficult to do for you.  Until we get a bike we can’t determine where the electric servo should, or can go – or how to mount it.

I hope you are aware that the existing vacuum servo-drive cruise kit is fully electronic in any case and performs brilliantly as long as you setup the free play properly in the ‘carburettor’ cable.

We could supply a kit which you then have to take responsibility for mounting the electric servo and I will quote on that if you are determined to go down that path, but my recommendation would be to go with what we already have – it works, is reliable and performs brilliantly.  And it has been tested in the field for about 7 years on literally thousands of bikes. See here to buy: http://www.mccruise.com/collections/honda/honda-st1300-st1300a

Thanks Abe, It is good to know where we stand with MCC on this matter  :thumb
My local Honda dealer said they have had no experience in fitting them, so I would be better to find someone who has had experience fitting them. So there is a fellow up near the Sunshine Coast that fits them or Dale McLean.
I've got 9 days at Mooloolaba in December so will check it out and will contact Dale to see what he can do for me
Or in the mean time someone may come up with another idea

Dale has done quite a few and IIRC does it in less than one day.
I installed my own and reckon I could do it in a day now I've fought the good fight.
(but I'm not offering   :grin )

Everything Tony from MCC says is true.  The device works brilliantly, so long as you get the cables right, and it's not brain surgery.  The instructions are extremely detailed and the hardware fits precisely.  The key point regarding the effective function is to set the "play" at exactly what they say (1 to 2 mm as I recall).  I set mine a little bit slacker than that, and while the system worked well, it was a bit sloppy engaging.  Once I bit the bullet and dug down into the throttle body again and tightened the link to spec, it got that bug out.

The MCC guys are also great with their telephone support.

Yes, $984 is a big hurdle.  But if you're planning on keeping the bike and doing more than half day runs,  you'll come to regard it as essential gear.  Without the electronic cruise control I'm sure I would have been pinged for speeding more than I have, and I could not have done the trips I have in the time I did.  It's right up there with the highway pegs and Airhawk in my survival kit.

Leo...I gather by you saying the local guys you're referring to Toowoomba Honda?

They fitted mine about 6 years ago......but...

...I was just up there a week ago to have the bike serviced and I got them to look at my MCCruise as it wouldn't engage.

They fixed it! So I know they have experience with MCCruise.

Gotta agree with everyone elses comments regarding the MCCruise. I got the version with the new software ( and has been said elsewhere, got the cable slack just right ) it works brilliantly. The difference between the one on my 1100 and the 1300 is quite substantial !!!

The new one is so smooth and holds the speed much better. Yep not cheap, but worth every cent in my book, I need to keep my license !  :thumbs :thumbs

You also mentioned Dale McLean but didn't mention his location.

Have you actually called the guys at MCC??? They are very responsive and will let you know who is nearest should they not be able to resolve it.
One day you will wake up and there won't be anymore time to do the things you've always wanted so do them NOW!!!
Remember there are 7 days in a week and Someday isn't one of them!

Dale is in Swansea.  I believe Farkleit in Brisbane also installs cruise controls.

I tried both the phone numbers but received no response so that listing may be out of date.

The Brisbane contact will no doubt sort it for me.

Thanks again.
