I have had heated grips since 1980, but in the early days they were off snowmobiles - metal coated ceramic inserts that went inside the handlebars.  They worked, but not as efficient as the new ones.  Have to look up what I paid back then....

I had the control unit on my Oxford heated grips fail in under 12 months.   The dealer replaced it under warranty, but said they there had been some failures of that component.  The Oxfords are MUCH cheaper than the Honda OEM heated grips, and are very effective.

Heated grips were trialled at my boys high school in the 1970's. Bicycle handle bars were adjusted with ends facing up and filled with hot water on sub zero mornings. This worked very well but went out of favour when a year or two later the bars broke in half while riding !

Honda heated grips are top notch, but sadly I'm led to believe you can't buy them any longer! :'(
