There is an essential mounting plate that may or may not be supplied automatically when you buy a topbox.
For the modern man who lives in the city, riding a bike might be one of the only ways to escape the humdrum monotony. To take off and ride. To be both at one with nature and one with the bike. To feel masculine. Adam Piggott

My first top case was an Rjays one which I had on my previous CX500. To mount that case I need to buy the Honda rear rack which I don't think is available anymore.
My current Third Gear case also mounts to the Honda rack.

This the Honda rear rack that I bought

and you can order one here http://www.davidsilverspares.co.uk/parts/by-part-number/hpart_08L42MT3B00/

Givi has their own rack for the 1100 which I was looking at should I replace my current case in the near future

I was looking at this case for mine and would need the above rack to fit it

and the light kit to go with it.

If I was going to get a new top box I would check out the one that Cerebral Knievel and Abe had on their STs :thumbsup

I believe it was a Givi with the brake light upgrade :thumbs

(Something like this)

Yikes!  Nearly $700 for a big box and mounting plate, plus more big $$ to get it sprayed to match the bike.  The OEM box for the ST13 was ~ $990, included mounting plate, back in 2013, dunno what they're asking now though.

I looked at that one but preferred the one in the link I posted - hoping the grain harvest will be better than last season though doubtful at the moment

All 3 of our ST1300,s are fitted with Givi 55's c/w mounting plates & the top case rack, an excellent product.
You are right, not much change out of  $1K each but we have found them brilliant, well worth it.
And the size suits us to a tee for 2 up travel with tent, airmats, sleeping bags and groundsheet all in a silver Ortlieb bag on the rack. If the weather is looking dodgy on the day, our wet weather gear when rolled up tight fits under the outer duo strap of the Andy Strapz if reqd. The A S,s are another great product.
Std Givi  Red, Silver or Black also match the ST colours so the whole set when loaded onto whichever bike still looks the goods!!
Cheers
Neil
