28 amp alternator for ST1100
« on: May 20, 2012, 07:28:38 PM »
I have a question for the electrical gurus.  I have a 1994 ST1100 with, I assume a 28 amp alternator.  I run 35W HID lights, a GPS, cruise control and a spare 12V socket (charge phone or similar).  I am going to fit a set of Oxford heated grips and maybe spotlights at a later stage.  Will I need to upgrade to a 40 amp alternator?  Looks like it is a complicated procedure.

With the spot lights, you would be getting close to the max output, ( about 4 amps left ).

If you get a chance to upgrade then do it.

Part number for my 40 amp is 31100-MAJ-G41 from David Silver Spares for 485 pound or about $780 plus postage

and from the US about $450 plus postage
http://www.hondapartsline.com/fiche_select.asp?mfg=Honda&partnumber=31100-MAJ-G41

Guessing both with postage would be way cheaper than local dealer price.

Youre kidding me, that much!!!!!  Forget the spotlights, just go with heated grips.  Thats "divorce" prices.

Easiest 40 amp alternator upgrade. Put your bike on the market for $5000 in a Brisbane news paper. Ride up to deliver. Buy new bike. Ride home.

They're all pretty coy about the mileage.  The only one talking about it has 128,000 kays.
I know they go forever, but things like plastic do deteriorate with age.  All depends whether they were garaged etc.
Still the price is right.  I got my first ST from the dealer in Moss St.  It was ex-Police with 92,000 and served the purpose.
For the modern man who lives in the city, riding a bike might be one of the only ways to escape the humdrum monotony. To take off and ride. To be both at one with nature and one with the bike. To feel masculine. Adam Piggott

Just make sure that it is not a pre-96 model, as the police bikes have the 28amp alternator as well, they just have a heavier duty regulator/rectifier.
