2009 ST1300A WONT IDLE
« on: November 06, 2013, 11:51:42 AM »
Hi Guys as a newbie was wondering if anyone has had this problem before. M 2009 ST1300 wont idle properly. Honda replaced the Map Sensor 18moths ago and now the problem has come back. Once you have the revs up the bike runs ok, however take the your hand off the throttle and she stalls. Any info greatly appreciated. Chast Canberra

I'm guessing the FI light is out.
The FI can be cantankerous to troubleshoot and expensive to replace.

BTW, as a rule, it's best to wait for the FI light to go out before cranking the donk.

Apart from that, have you done a search on the ST-Owners site?  If there is an answer anywhere, it's there.
You don't even have to register to search.

Soory I missed this (flu and all). The clogged 5 way tubes are a common condition, and hopefully will fix the problem.  After that it trickier.  Good luck.

Thanks to one and all for your replies. Yep the answer was clogged 5 way tubes. Somehow got gunked up maybe from dirty fuel. All is well  and the wonderful machine is purring again. Cheers Chast :

I had a similar problem and everyone said it was either doggy fuel or MAP sensor, actually turned out to be a really simple problem, gum in the 5 point vacuum connector on the top of the throttle assembly, blew it out with a air jet and problem gone

Hey guys

So it seems I have a similar problem.

I have checked5 way - looks clear

I just replaced the map sensor - no good, if not worse.

Idling at about 850 - 1000 rpm cold. If I give throttle it seems to surge in regular waves.

Any idea where to go from here?

Hate having to drive the car!

It sounds like it's not running on all four cylinders.... Feel all the the pipes, I bet one of them is cold or colder than the others...

So I checked and tested all the plugs, leads etc. all appeared to be working. Mucked around for a couple of hrs...

I decided to take everything off again and have a look under the air box. turns out one of the hoses from the 5 way had disconnected at some point. Put it all back and it runs again! YAY

Still seems to be a bit low on the revs when cold starting tho... and is a little twitchy with the idle speed but is acceptable.

Hopefully it starts in the morning when I go to work

Was the 5 way clean inside

This was ST2UP's 5 way. (little video)

Hope this helps.

Yep all clear.

Might buy a new set of plugs. Is running not bad but seems slightly off.

Thanks for the advice

Hi Chaps

I seem to encounter the idling problem about every 50/60,00klms or so, just chuck in half a bottle of injector cleaner and all is well again, now done 180,000 klms.. might be accumulating a little water in the tank over time or a shonky tank of fuel.

If it's water, a cup of metho into the tank will ensure the water gets dissipated and moved on.

You'll need a litre of metho if you take on fuel in Wilcannia.  :||||

Seen two 2009 STs with loose intake manifold clamps leading to bizarre and intermittent problems. ?.

I bought some "cheap" fuel from Coles and my 2009 ran very rough and started stalling.  I had no idea what was happening and had to keep the revs ups when at traffic lights or it would stall.    I went back to my usual servo and put some good fuel back in as soon as I could and this seems to have resolved the issue.    I am now cautious, saving 10c a litre may not be a good savings if there is crap in the fuel.  Richo
