Title: New Game - Who's ridden in the hottest/coldest temps?
Post by: Diesel on June 24, 2012, 01:25:30 PM
Take a pic of your dashboard external temp readout WHILST OUT ON A RIDE and post it here so others can see how foolish  BRAVE you are. No pic - it never happened! And no pics of leaving your bike to idle and heat up the sensor either - honesty is paramount!      :-(((

Happy hunting - oh - and tell us where and when to keep it interesting for us all.

Cheers, Diesel

No display, sorry, but my missus and I rode through Gyra sometime in the early '00s in winter on our first ST. It was F'in cold. We pulled up and poor Rob fell off the bike frozen.

I'll try to re-inact that experience sometime soon. Any volunteers?

Sorry, no temp gauge on 1100's to cold for camera to work properly.

The coldest ride we've had is on 20th May 2006 which was the day we rode home from Bendigo after picking up  :bl11. The previous evening we were met at the railway station by the owner who took us to her home. After a coffee or two and the sale finalised we hopped on the bike and headed to the caravan park cabin we had booked for the night.

We left 6:30am on the 20th and never noticed the frost until we got out of town on the way to Serpentine (40kms from Bendigo). We could see the ice either side of the road and to cut the wind chill I slower to about 60kph from 80kph for a couple k's. About 5 kms from Serpentine Heather had to get off the bike, as it was to cold for her. About ten minutes later we were on the move again and stopped at the roadhouse in Serpentine and stayed inside until we thawed out.

No pic's Diesel as this happened a couple of years ago.

Several times, on the work bike, we've been on patrol and the gauge has hit its highest reading. If you've never seen it you're lucky. The gauge topped out at 50. :eek

DoM gave the temp's at early 40's but on the bike, with reflected heat of the road surface, etc, it was showing 50.

I remember in a day early March 2007 that I barely made it into Geraldton as they had their hottest day on record. The temperature I don't know but I wasn't used to it. I sat in the Coles shopping centre for two hours getting over heat stroke. At least the fairing helped a little but I did see a harley rider as well, not sure how he coped. It was also two/three days before cyclone George hit Port Hedland.

That was on my first trip to Port Hedland and I went via the coast rather the shorter inland route because I called in to see my sis who lives near Kwinana.

I never wore my wet weather gear around Port Hedland/Karratha either. If it did rain, it was warm enough to dry out in five/ten minutes....lol

No heated grips, or temp gauge. Tho on the way to work at 0530 (cold n dark o'clock) last week, I'm sure the water temp gauge went backwards.. When I started the bike the needle was on cold, and when I got to work it was below cold.... Really it was!!!!  ( the first two knuckles of each finger were frozen as well. )

At age 19 (a couple of years ago) riding Kwaka twin in -5 on black ice, was a regular occurrence in Rotorua NZ.
I was living outside of town so no hot pools of sulphur around to keep things warm.

to early for digi photo and to cold to think about using camera, just concerned about getting to work in one piece.

It's comforting to know that I'm not the only person who has noticed there temp gauge head back towards the cold end of the scale as it's happened on my bike a couple times. On Saturday's ride to the RTE it took about 40kms for the needle to get into the normal range and I'm begining to wonder if the thermostat is stuck open...........lol

Did the original Alpine Rally in 1970 on a Honda CB250 and rode through snow for last 50ks untill we arrived at the camp site (tents only) at Yarrangobilly Caves in the Snowy Mountains NSW. Must have looked cold when arrived as a fellow motorcyclist offered me a drink, when I said "what is it" his reply was "don't asked" so I took a swig and a fire started in my belly, I then asked what was that and his reply was Bundie OP.
Had the best nights sleep after that regardless of the minus 10 degrees.

Ok, not brilliant photographs but I'm claiming 38 degrees on the NW Coastal Hwy somewhere around Port Hedland in May and 32 degrees the same day but at 6:04 in the evening.

Hi Rob,

"Ok, not brilliant photographs but I'm claiming 38 degrees on the NW Coastal Hwy somewhere around Port Hedland in May and 32 degrees the same day but at 6:04 in the evening."

You struck that on a rather coolish time of the year for up that area. I spent about 2 years each at both Port Hedland and Karratha.

My feelings too Allan. I lived in Newman for 7 years and I know it was a dry heat but it didn't really get hot until about 42.

Aah Mewman .... the city of cats! lol

I went for an extended ride around my region in 37* heat and that was flamin hot in ATGATT for a prolonged period. Plenty of hydration kept all my senses online and alert - but comfort levels only returned around 28* later that evening.

I don't know too much about the hottest because that was when I lived in Brisbane and without a temp gauge, but I do know about the coldest.............ridden in 2 degrees for a few kls and 3 degrees for quite a few kls a few times. Usually when it gets down to those temps in Tassie it's accompanied with a cold wind and the recorded temp doesn't allow for the wind chill........even with temps in winter at 10 degrees it feels much colder because of the cold wind. :crazy

Mind you............we do get many beautiful days in Tassie as well!! 8)

My first long(ish) ride with my ST1100R was from Canberra to Sydney in January this year was doing well until I got to Goulburn and the temperature went straight up... BY the time I goit t Campbletown it was 42 degrees and I think I might have lost a few kilos - took a few hours to cool down and rehydrate, then to top off the ride home - refueled Marulan and it started to rain and by the time I got to Lake George the rain was falling sideways in buckets! I read in the paper the next day that they expierienced a mini cyclone with trees being uprooted all over the place!
Then back in the 90's I used to ride my XS1100 to work from South Canberra into the city for a 6am start and would often be scraping ice from the beard and jacket!

I don't have a temp guage but the coldest would have been an early morning 10km ride into work when it was -5c on the GS1000. My hands froze and I nearly dropped the bike when I could not feel the brakes.  Coldest I felt was a winter ride over night from Canberra to Carpendeitc (Vic) in 1979 on the Suzuki GT750 - I was nearly had it by the time I reached Yass, with another 800kms to go. Shortly after I put on a sport touring full fairing and heated grips.  I have been riding in 40c plus days quite a few times over the years, both day trips and when touring.  A few extra stops and plenty of hydration. Having a fairing to deflect that extra hot air makes it more bearable.

Last Saturday heading to Saddleworth for the 1st RTE in SA noticed the air temp reading at -1 at 6.50am after leaving Roxby on route to Woomera. Reached a scorching 2 50k out from Woomera and topped a blistering 6 from there all the way to Pt.Augusta. Total travel time 2hrs 20 minutes. Grip warmers saved the hands. Up here temperatures hit high 40's in summer and have noticed 46 on occassion. Despite my little story the thing that impresses me is the temp guage has never moved off 3 bars once operating temp reached, nor does fuel economy seem to be effected. The bike accepts the conditions and works with me. My old ST1100 was the same though I noticed more thermo fan activity in extreme heat. I love my bike.

Mt Ruapehu today (1 July). Ok, didn't get a photo of the thermometer as every time I stopped the engine would warm it up to an unimpressive 0 degrees. It did get down to minus 4 but you'll just have to take my word. (Yes, it was feet on the road for the icy bits!)

I doubt I can compete for hottest temp over here. But wait until next winter and I will give the coldest a good shot. I have ridden in the past with snow pilling up on the tank and climbing up my chest, the road conditions were icy so the shield was no use at all, and that was only going to work. Got to love those heated grips and jacket.

Just came back from a week in Alice Springs. Bloody middle of Australia, middle of the desert and it was minus 2 Celsius at night and the week before it was minus 4 Celsius at night. And "SNOW" the last time it rained their was January and the temps were up their at times around 45 Celsius

How about 3 degrees at Yulara in June this year.    Note the time of 7.36am....   none of this 6.00am middle of the night stuff.   The temp acutally dropped to 2 degrees at 8.00am, but there was no way that I was going to stop and take my hands off the heated grips to get a photo.

Since this is about PICS of your dash showing the coldest temp and NOT 'ripping yarns' - looks like I've got the prize......

Took this pic as we left Silverton NSW for Broken Hill, then back through Wilcannia, Cobar, Nygan, and on to Qld.....

Those big S.A. softies still asleep back at the Cabin (PhilSTer, Steve and Aaron) wouldn't have known any of this as Growly found the remote and turned the heater up for them as we left!       :rofl

My heated grips worked every day that it was 6-9* C - but chose ONE DAY to stop working - you guessed it!!!         :cuss

I can beat it with -2oC out near Warwick a month back, but it was too blary cold to get off the bike and try to operate a camera, so you've won it for now.

I have no pic but back in my mid twenties along time ago, i was in my trial first marriage ( 2 years ) we lived in Maryborough Qld and i traveled to Gympie every day for work on my bike. My parents had a cattle property just outside of Gympie on the the way to Maryborough so i use to call in about 6.00am for a cuppa then be at work by 7.30am. In winter by the time i got there mum use to come down and undo my chin strap because i could not feel a thing.Temps there got down to around -5 in winter. Oh yea i am now married  20 years to a wonderful lady, Tracey would have to be wonderful to put up with me this long. Sorry about the long winded story you can all wake up now. :whistle :wht11

Back in the mid eighties I was stopped at Cocklebiddy (on the Nullabor) because it was too hot to travel, (and changing tyres on trucks is as boring as writing out cheques for new ones, and the damage they do when they let go.)

We were sitting on the verandah with the manager who'd just brought out his barometer and showed us the temp which was a moderate 53.2 degrees celcius.

Whilst we were making nodding noises about the situation he stood up and exclaimed 'Sh.t' We followed him to the chook pen and there were all his chooks laying down dead. Under the trees next to the pen were about a dozen small birds feet up and expired.

I spent a few years doing rig shifts all over the top end, but that's about the warmest I've seen registered on a barometer.

I know it won't be snowing but I'm going through the Bylong Valley 1 June, then onto the back of Goulburn 2 June. All up nearly 1000K of about 5-15 degrees. Thank God for a bigger screen, heated grips and seat. At least the gear is good these days, not like before when you had to shove newspaper in a cloth linen jacket that stunk like bitumen! (Don't miss getting into trouble for staining everything black when visiting Mum!)

No photo again but the lowest temperature at the NZ Brass Monkey rally was minus 14 or minus 17. Drink water bottle was frozen at 10pm, no bedtime coffee and the ride home next day was "interesting" When I hung up my tent to dry on the Tuesday morning, after the tent had been in the shed for two nights, there was still ice wrapped up in the tent. Still keep on going back for more pleasure or punishment, undecieded which.

Frack that youngSTer!

I'll stick to the icy cold Tassie climate thanks!
A heating suit is easy...a cooling suit is a lot more cumbersome!

Coldest I've ever been was in England. Alphafang can understand !!
1972, November 5th. Guy Fawkes night. Always wet and cold !!  Had to ride from London to Camberley (around 70 - 80 kilometers on my naked Bonnie. Freezing fog, melting snow and drizzle  :-[ Worste conditions ever !!  Only had a thin leather on, borrowed two extra T shirts and a thick jumper. Goggles kept freezing and misting up so gave them the flick and settled for ice on my eyebrows (all open faced helmets in those days) - finally got home and sat in a hot bath for an hour just shivering. Then didn't move from in front of the fire for the rest of the night drinking coffee and whiskey. S**T I was cold..
On the opposite side of the coin, last year out the back of Toodyay (WA) was so hot that puting your feet down at a road junction made the inside of the legs start to cook with the heat of the road   :H.
Learnt to stop without taking my feet of the pegs that day  :runyay :runyay.

Once again no pics, but hottest I've been through was riding Sydney to Darwin via Melbourne and Adelaide when I first bought the bike in February 2006.  Kinda glad I didn't have a temp gauge and that I did have my camel back.  Best I drank in a day was 18 litres!!! :H :H :H

Last year i was restricted to riding on 4 wheels instead of 2. However here is a quick snap of me on the bike on a nice balmy day only -13 deg C. I think the coldest i have ridden in was -27 deg C, 65 km/h winds and a light blizzard ( about 100m vis). was a little scary. By the way did i mention i was on sea ice...lol

Sorry Hendo, but it doesn't count.   Go back to the original rules on the first post.   :law  No picture of the temp on your dashboard and it didn't happen.   However, -27 is impressive.   :eek   We may get close to that at Uralla during the Christmas in July.

I have ridden Perth in minus 1 when doing courier work. (Damn cold on the finger tips)
And stupid enough for both the missus and I to get caught up coming home one day when the temp peaked at 45. It also turned out to be the one day no bugger had their sprinklers on when they shouldn't, I was looking for any water source.
We were literally peeling our jackets and cloths off as we walked through the door and spent the next 10 - 15 min sitting on the floor in the shower with the cold water running. (Damn hot)

Dave                                                                        :wht13

Feel your pain Poppy Dave, and the service blokes take the heat shielding out of the tanks im sure cos you just cant touch them after a short while if the the air temp is above 30. Many many red inner legs.

Had -5 a few times last year on the way to work at around 5am from the Wheatbelt.

And I thought 5o forecast for Saturday in sub-tropical Brissie was a tad chilly.

Live it up, folks!      :rofl

You know you're going to win this comp.
I'm happy to let you, since the penalty is to live in Guyra.

Did you beat Stanthorpe's MINUS FOUR?  Pretty good for Queensland, but then we're used to winning stuff...     :whistle

Jan 1st, 2012... cruised from Warragul, Traralgon, Sale, Bairnsdale, Orbost, Eden, Bega, Cooma, Canberra, Cowra to Parkes... 40-something degrees heat and my hands suffered to the point where the skin peeled off in one slab 4 days later.

July 2016 to September 2019 sees a 1.3oC drop in temp.  I though Climate Change predicated (not misspelt) a 1.3oC increase every 10 years (or something).
I know, I know- you can't compare Perth with Beaufort.  They have nothing in common.

It’s pointless looking at such a tiny amount of data.

Early Feb, 2013. Hot day near Mt Isa, I made the mistake of riding without gloves in 42 degree temp.
Temp had reached 45 a few days earlier.

Hands peeled in one slab 4 days after photo was taken.
