ST Replacement....
« on: June 29, 2012, 11:49:14 AM »
C'mon folks we've ALL pictured ourselves on a different ride, or thought about "what's next?" And since the ST has ceased production - she is on a limited time line.

If the ST wasn't sooooo good - what would you like to replace her with - which M/C could possibly take her place in your stable?

There could be a zillion answers to this - so I've picked out the usual suspects, but feel free to add your own flavour below - it'd be nice to throw up a pic of the bike in your text so we can all have a gander!

Such names like Victory, Triumph Ducati etc - knock yourselves out...

Cheers, Diesel

Hard to say, as what I have now does everything I want.

If mine expired for some reason I would try and get another ST11 so I can just swap things over relatively easily. Finding a reasonable one distance wise is another issue. In the US low mileage exaples are still around, but rarely here.  I am torn at the moment between what is currently available - Wing, BMW 1600, BMW GSA (or equivalent in other brands once they put on bigger fuel tanks) or the new Triumph 1200 Trophy.  I would have to ride a few of them to decide.  Of course if a little used ST13 in great condition with all the gear on it was available for a bargain price...there may be one available once members post up what they might do  :whistle

This site suggests that the 1300 is still in production with a 2012 model released in December of last year for the US market. The site includes a list of 2012 Honda models with the ST down the bottom.

http://www.totalmotorcycle.com/motorcycles/2012models/2012-Honda-ST1300ABS.htm

Also a US Honda dealer showing a link to the US Honda Site with 2010 and 2012 models available with earlier model being about $2000 cheaper

http://powersports.honda.com/2012/st1300.aspx

It's very unusual to stop making one model before releasing the next one.

But what bike would I get next?
There's not much choice anyway. I'd like the Goldwing GL1500 and 1800 but the 1300 fills the role at a cheaper price so it comes back to the 1300. Saying that, my 1100 hasn't caused me any grief yet so I doubt if I'd get rid of her even if I bought the 1300.

By adding wedgetail outriders to my ST it will see me well into the retirement home but a Lotto win may see it sharing the garage with a new wing.

But if for some reason I can’t locate any used ones in good condition :'( I guess the next move would be the ST1800 :thumb

I'm hoping for a few more years out of the ST1300, but a Wing beckons.  Fortunately Brian has pioneered the route for those not wanting to be the first to break ranks (I haven't mentioned Barry, because he'll see the error of his ways and return to the fold :grin).

Part of the temptation is getting my Flight Attendant back in the saddle after she gets her bionic hip which may be later this year.  She's down to 10% movement in the OEM jobby, so it's medical science to the rescue!

The Stelvio looks a bit too agricultural- I'm used to a bit more protection than it appears to offer.  Even now, we're talking about adding deflectors etc to our heavily faired bikes.  The Stelvio would need quite a bit of wind deflector treatment if that's what we're wanting.  It certainly has lots of other goodies.  We're obviously addicted to tankering fuel around, and it's certainly got that.

How many kays do you get out of a tank on the Wing, Brian?
For the modern man who lives in the city, riding a bike might be one of the only ways to escape the humdrum monotony. To take off and ride. To be both at one with nature and one with the bike. To feel masculine. Adam Piggott

Firstly , funny reply Streak . It was a very laugh out loud moment.
Hey Bill , the schWING has a smaller tank then the ST being a 25ltr asfor some stats its too early for true figures but its not an around town bike so as a mile muncher i believe it to be comparitive to its lil' brother.
Power delivery is smooth and plentiful, comfort is the best i have ever encountered and where i see my money well spent. Lugguge space pre top box rack is marginally better. As you say many ST pilots are ' weighing' down their STallions like pack mules , I equate this to loading a few cubic metres of top soil into the boot of the aurion. Its not what they were designed for...in my humble opinion of course. But its an individual thing and i do respect their choice to 'customise their toys'.......Cheers Brian

No plans to get rid for a while, but that's just purely down to finances - the ST is alright, but IMHO it's not the be-all and end-all.

A KTM 990 Adv might be first on the list.  I also like the Moto Guzzi Stelvio NTX.

If BMW could build their bikes properly I would like an RT or a GSA.

More realistically, the V-Strom and Wee-Strom have caught my eye, I quite like the idea of a Wee - that little 650 would be more than enough with our suffocating speed limit.  I quite like the new Wee.  Maybe a Triumph Tiger 800XC would be worth a look.  The downside to these bikes is that they don't have anywhere near the fuel range of the ST.

I wouldn't mind a go on a ST1300, I reckon I might like that a bit more than the 1100.

I also quite fancy a KLR650 to try some 'Adventure' riding on, but this would be in addition to something else.

Just need some $$$$  :wink1

I've been to the uncertain hell that is BMW ownership. I'll keep my 1100 for the next 10 years or so I reckon. I would have been looking at the Triumph Explorer, but I'm more a fan of wasting money on appreciating assets now.

My '01 1100 is a 'new' machine anyway! My cars were made in 1977 and 1975.  :grin

What's better for the job than ST1100??? Don't know. Have thought about the Guzzi Stelvio but had a sit on one at the gold coast bike show and was un impressed with seating, height and top heavyness. New VRX1200 sounds good but suspension is less than ST. Triumph, mmm maybe but chain drive. Bemmer, forget it, priced any parts for one lately? Ducati, ditto. Harley, don't want to know, too many grissle grabbers. Suzuki/Yamaha/ Kawasaki, no better than what I have now so wont be going there. No, comes back to 'I have the best bike for what I do' and am happy to keep riding it till it dies.  :)

Should the day come when my ST 1300 dies, then I suppose it would depend on the state of my body as to what I get next. If my legs have completely failed to work or my bum has completely died then I'd go for the 'Wing, but if I can still walk, talk and chew gum at the same time then I'd probably go for the new Triumph Trophy. I have a really big soft spot for the Trophy, my best mate when I was growing up had a Triumph TR6 Trophy, wonderful piece of machinery!, and the new Triumph bikes seem to be as good.  However I have no intention of changing any time soon!

I'd love a BMW if money wasn't an object, maybe a K1600LT.  I've always liked their ergos and the suspension set-up on their touring bikes is probably the best at dealing with our crappy roads.

Been looking very closely at the dual sport market.  They've come a long way these last few years and seem to be really well suited to the wide range of riding conditions we have in this country.  I've been steadily test riding them as they become available and the Triumph Explorer is top of the tree at the moment.  The new Trophy has stirred me up a bit but I think I'll eventually make the leap to an adventure bike when the ST dies.

Pillion in a million, myself on the ST on STeroids plus my mate Geoff and his wife on their ST1300
went down to Byron lighthouse on Saturday for a ride and to checkout the whales.
If you haven't been it's worth the ride with parking at a premium it's only $3 for bikes.
After enjoying the breathtaking vista we returned to the bikes only to find some overseas tourists taking photo's of each other beside/ Infront of my 1800 schWING... Hilarious ..
Geoff jokingly asked if they like pictures of his ST ....lol.... Nah we're good... Was the reply

My ST13 is only 14 months old... if I mentioed this thread to wifey I think it would become my new home.   :spank

However a coupla things...
  • The VFR1200 is a beast - really nimble, packs a whallop, but it so not in the same class as the ST: smaller range, compact riding posture, etc.... it's a street bike, not a tourer.
  • The 1400GTR was my 2nd choice when I bought my ST. It has all of the fruit (TPMS, traction control, heated grips, etc.) as standard. REALLY nice to ride, packs a punch, and is cheaper. It has a smaller range, but manageable for me. The thing that turned me off was the reported maintenance costs.... $1,200 service for valve clearances at 18k intervals.

Dear Wifey, the ST will do me for retirement  :well . This is because mine has only done 17,000km - it's barely been around the block.

The other thing that makes me wonder - very interested to hear other OzSToc-ians - electrics vehicles are fast approaching. While they're along way off, I bet they will be commonnplace when I need a new pair of wheels. Some would say an electric motorcyle isn't a motorcycle - certainly not as we know it. However, think of this: maximum torque at 0 RPM, reduced maintenance, etc. It's those who like to drive a gear lever and clutch, like the noise they make, or those that go bush for extended rides that might still be driving the 2010 ST1300A antique - you never know, you might be on mine!
