Hello all,
Just purchased my first ST1100A and I'm impressed with most aspects of the bike. The motorcycle is a 1995 model with 128000 kms. A very limited service history but was looked after by a fitter and turner so that's good news. The bike cost 3000 dollars so on the cheaper side for an ST. It has taller screen, top box, heated grips and throttle lock. So far I have cut the hose between the radiator cap and overflow bottle to get rid of the damaged piece. I also found the front brake switch faulty so carefully pulled it apart and cleaned the contacts with a file and eraser. Ordered a new radiator cap and brake switch as my fix was only meant to be temporary.

I intend to replace all the cooling system hoses and thermostat. Also going to service the shaft drive. I usually ride in the snowy mountains area. I'm a bit concerned about alternator failure in the middle of nowhere. I'm not liking the price and availability of the 40A alternator. Might just rebuild the 26A unit if it fails. I'm happy to tinker so would have a crack at a stator rewind if required. My son works for a Honda dealer so that will be handy.

I picked the bike up on Saturday and have ridden every day since. My CRF250 and Ford Courier haven't gotten a look in since. I can see why these bikes are so revered. I enjoy the smooth power delivery and the protection from the elements.

Previous bike was a V-Strom 650 (lost my license on that one) and a couple of BMW K100s. I've owned other smaller bikes but this one impresses me the most.

Happy ST owner,
Cheers
Alfy

Hi Alfy from nearby Canberra. Some others here have also had K100s. There is no reason a 28A model can't last for many years if you clean all the connections every now and again, and don't overload the alternator.

Thanks for the warm welcome. ST got a service yesterday with new oil and filter. I reconnected the heated grips up properly this time. New radiator cap and front brake switch. All the connectors from alternator, rectifier/regulator and starter solenoid inspected. All good. Alternator output strong at 14.4 at 1000 rpm. Will look into some of the local ST rides as soon as I've completed all the maintenance.

Cheers
Alfy

Alfy12,
We have the Balranald Tri-State Overnight RTE coming up on 19th - 20th Sept.   An easy 400km doddle from Wagga, so perhaps we will see you there.

Thanks for the invite Pete but I'm heading to the turning wave festival in Yass on that weekend. Has become a bit of an annual event organised by the misses.
