Title: Recommendation wanted - phone holder - 2019
Post by: spanner on October 22, 2019, 09:21:07 AM
Just wondering if there are any recent variations for phone holders that people have discovered over the last 12 months.

I know people have recommended the ram mount X style holder.

I ride over pretty rough central Queensland roads and get seriously bouncy sections so need to have a solid and secure system.

Anything new seen and or recommended?

Cheers all.

This is my phone and GPS set up on the Migsel Mount.

The power cradle for the GPS is hard wired into the bike and is switchable with the key (includes the accessories position).

I use a Techmount Techgripper for the phone https://www.techmounts.com/index.php (https://www.techmounts.com/index.php) which I bought from eBay. ( https://www.ebay.com.au/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=m570.l1313&_nkw=Techmount+Techgripper&_sacat=0 (https://www.ebay.com.au/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=m570.l1313&_nkw=Techmount+Techgripper&_sacat=0) )which I first used on the 1100. On the 1300 I had to get a 17 mm to 25 mm ball adaptor to use it with the Ram Mount items that both Migsel and Tom Tom use.

I sourced the Ram Mount Products from here https://www.motogps.com.au/ (https://www.motogps.com.au/)

I have the large X gripper from back in the days when I used an 8 inch tablet for the GPS but to much mucking around securing it with the rubber retainer which if you don't use will be just about the end of your device.

Not sure what the smaller one is like but I guess the same would apply.

The other thing you need to consider is how waterproof or not the phone is.

For me, the phone is in my jacket pocket. Check it when I stop. Not interested when riding. Sat nav is my only distraction. Another 2c...................... :eek

That's because you haven't got any friends and any calls you get will be about an outstanding bill.

Hi-jack warning .......

My mobile is provided by work, the advantage is it doesn't cost me anything, except for the disadvantage of needing to keep it switched-on and take calls afterhours.  In nearly 20 years with my employer this only happened a dozen or so times, so not a big deal.

Another disadvantage is when no.1 son calls to advise that he run out of fuel on the Hume Freeway near Wangaratta, I'm riding on the Princes Highway near Bairndale, about 5 or 6 hours away, I wasn't much help.

And on the way home from Wooli, riding through Cessnock, a call from daughter because the clutch on MY car had failed, again I was not much help.

In both cases, with the Sena bluetooth connection to the iPhone was nice to know your family can contact if needed, or not needed.

..... end hi-jack.

I have the small Ram X gripper, it's fine with the iPhone 6s.   The iPhone is NOT waterproof.

I was wondering what that bit was :-). Get to try it when I get back (in March, no roads/riding till then, unless you count a quad bike)

 :Like:

Only ever had one bluetooth phone call on the bike years ago and after the call thought I don't remember the last 500 metres so no more phone calls

The phone is more an MP3 player for me than anything else while out in the more boring sections of our highways.

In theory the phone is also needed for the GPS to update traffic but I have never been able to get it to work; anyone have a three old kid?

On the rare occasion that both phone and GPS are linked into the helmet headset the phone will set to play music only (if needed) and the GPS takes over the phone call functions. We've only ever tested the systems at home just to make sure they do work if needed.

the phone is my Map. I don't have a separate GPS or sat nav etc. I also don't use it for music (at this stage as I haven't got a head set for the helmet and I cant find ear phones that seem to work well enough..... mind you I would like to have some decent ear phones or a decent coms system for my helmet. I have a shoei neotec flip face.

I’m using a quad-lock system now onto a RAM mount....previously modified a Lifeproof belt holder and bolted it to a RAM mount. Both work as well as each other.

Cheers

I'll report back.

True, adjusting for inflation would now be at least 5c.................
