Hi all,
I have question for you all regarding the battery in 2004 st1300, I went to start the bike yesterday and nothing turned the key all the dash lights came on and the headlight. when I pushed the go button nothing happened (damn it), now I can hear what I assume is the starter solenoid clicking but nothing after that, the trickle charger was left unconnected for a week.
when I spoke to the local dealer in regards to cost of new battery, his reaction was one of surprise the the solenoid sounds to be clicking but not starting.

any suggestions please.

check voltage before starting and i think a new one is needed by the sounds

As I have just had something similar, check the kill switch.

Wont be the kill switch, as if its off, the starter button will do nothing, and no click.

Once again, sounds like a failed battery. If battery drops below 10 volts when the button is pressed then its flat, probably dead. Easy way to check is connect to the car with jumper leads, and try a start.

Thats exactly what mine was doing on Sunday, all lights were on and when I pressed the starter I could hear the starter relay making a slight click. Its all in the topic below this one.

Time to visit your auto store, they should have a cheap multimeter that would do the trick.

You can find reasonably good basic ones for $10 these days since they went digital.

ok guys I put a set of jumper cables to the battery but still nothing, so im thinking it may not be the battery, maybe the starter solenoid? can somebody give me an idea of where it is, the clicking sound appears to be coming from under the plastic wheel arch cover under the seat.

Did you try a multimeter? I would do that before jumping to starter motor

Or get your roadside service to come out if you have membership if you not sure they can load test the battery

Have you tried flicking the kill switch (on and off) on the right hand handle bar?

I have battery chargers, jumper leads etc etc so if you need some help let me know. A dead battery may not allow starting even when using jumper leads, and the jumper leads have to be good ones.

If you take the battery to Nico at Motorini in Botany st Phillip he will test it for you
If it's no good he has Motobat batteries you need the MBTX9U and his price of $88 is good

After lots of swearing and head scratching the fault has come to light.

turns out there was an electrical fault/loose wire which was forcing the neutral light to stay on, turns out the bike was in gear (dumb ass here forgot to check) and as we all know they won't start in gear.
any way a quick electrical repair to fix a loose wire take the bike out of gear and bingo she starts first go.

how dumb do I feel, so thanks for the advise but crisis averted.

Don't feel too bad, as a relatively new ST1300 owner had the same issue about not starting when it is in gear and sidestand down. After a few calls, jumper leads etc etc problem solved! And that was at the start of a long FarRide...

Years ago my Kawasaki GPZ 250 would start but had no power, after a lot of playing around found the side stand was not hitting the switch when it came up.
