Started building my trailer...

Frame: 40x40x1.6 RHS, 2 mtr long, 1.1 mtr wide, 1.25 wide over the wheels. Big enough to put a Swag on or a roof top camper or a trail bike or a quad

It's going to be a convertable... i.e. flat deck then add a box with lid or a camper on top... That is why the frame is a little heavier than some..

10x6" mini mags with boat trailer plastic guards

Still got to make the suspension yet, which will be independant swing arm with CB250 coil over shocks like Brocks http://ozstoc.com/index.php?topic=258.0

Got a set of Mini hubs and swing arms from the wrecker, cut down the swing arms to stubs then weld on my swing arms. I have left the brake backing plate mounts on in case i want to fit brakes later...

I'll post more pics as i go...

Impressive, but I would have thought that 25mm would have been enough.

I have thought about redoing mine with the cross tubes being reduced to 13 mil to save weight

Yeh, it's probably a little heavy, but because it is going to be a flat deck with no other supports, i figured it had to be stronger

Given that the bike weighs almost 300kg and the loaded trailer is allowed to be up to that weight, strength became more important than weight.
This trailer will go behind the car at times as well...

Its all experimentation. I have had my 105Kgs on my chassis with no flex, and Im sure it would take 300 easily, your certainly will.

The independent suspension is the bit the is the hardest to design, I will be interested to see how you do yours.

I've got the suspension in my head.. now i only have to get it to the steel

Found this 360 degree swivel coupling on Ebay for $146 landed out of the US. Should make things easy on that side of things.

Havent gone for a swivel hitch at the moment, I am going to wait n see if its needed. If it is then I will put on the thinking cap again.

Brock I have the swivel hitch on mine and it allows for a lot more lean angle when required (read fun) without limiting the relationship between the trailer and bike connection.

I've seen these Flexitor suspension units on bike trailers and would consider using them if I was to build a trailer. Available from SA Trailer and Chassis.

I looked at them too but the lightest of them are rated at 750kg per pair, so even fully loaded at say 250kg, my trailer would not even be flexing them...

ok, more pics.. suspension this time
also ordered a pair of shocks of Ebay to suit small quad..
adjustable spring pre-load and shorter than the CB250 ones which were 320mm long, these are 260mm which means i can stand them up straighter... about 80 to 90mm of travel which should do.

swing arm suspension...
stuff a bit of 25mm RHS down the hole in the cut down stub axle, weld a bit of 30mm RHS on the end in line with the axle, fabricate the rest as required... the cross bars are to stiffen it to stop twist.

used 22mm x 12mm nylon trailer spring bushes for the pivots... put the bushing tube all the way across to square everything up, then cut it down after..

next is mounting plates and bolts etc...

all the while, using the wheels against the trailer frame to line them up, squared to the ground, centred on the frame... hopefully it tracks true

the more you stand the shocks/springs upright, the better they will work.....
i intend to place the bottom of the shocks right down at the rim edges so i can stand them up as much as possible

That is so true.

My shocks are from a Z250 Kwaka, and are 300mm. The shortest I could find at Two Wheel Wreckers. I had to cpmromise with the angle and the overall height I was looking for. As Terry says, it works, it holds my 105 Kgs bouncing over the wheel

Haven't done much recently until yesterday... more suspension, now it actually stands on it's wheels!
Not quite what i had in mind but the springs on those shocks are very strong so i had to reduce the travel/increase the loading by laying them down. For 50mm of wheel travel, the springs move about 10mm! What this does tho is give me a nice soft initial wheel movement that gets harder with travel. e.g. i can 'bounce' the trailer easily for a an inch or so but i can also stand on one side (95kg) and it only moves another inch. Also, i have the ability to preload the springs when the loaded weight is higher like 250kg.

Anyway, it is all trial and error so will see how it goes :)

Yep its fun working that stuff out aint it.

My spring/shocks will take my 105Kg bouncing on em just nicely

The spring units look to be opposite way to normal on a bike swing arm, is this a better way to mount them?

probably not, but because they are so strong, i had to reverse it to get leverage... they are mounted on the swing arm from drop down mounts so 'up' on the swing arm becomes 'push' on the spring.. looks like it works so we'll wait and see :)

Its in the same style as this one on my trailer, just with more mechanical advantage.

A bit like a seesaw, but changing the pivot point
