TOTAL POWER LOSS (electrical)

Well I just don't believe it, after 170,000klms with NO problems, started my 2003 NON ABS ST 1300 bike up, rode 1 klm and it shut down completely, no power.  Checked the battery and then all the fuses but not a sign of ANY electricals anywhere, not even and ignition light.  Boy hard to push 300 kilos home that 1 klm.  On the bike mover to the mechanics, his reply, wow, it sure doesn't have any electricals?????  Let you know whats up in the future, he is assuming at this stage maybe a wire in the loom has parted/snapped????

Thanks for letting us know, could help someone else. Last problem like this with an ST1100 turned out to be a failed battery.

Two Three four points to check.

The plug for the ignition wiring from the switch, and the ignition switch itself, The main fuse in the starter relay. Lose the main fuse, lose everything The plug to the starter relay assy, may have burnt connections..

I am not familiar with the ST13 wiring, but there may also be a main fusible link (looks like a strip of metal) in addition to the main fuse in the starter relay, if it is like the ST1100.

The wiring diagram shows the fuse, just the same as the 1100.  Of course it could be battery failure, easy way to check is to try and jump start it from a car. if it starts then battery is main suspect.

Check the easiest things first, and eliminate them. It makes life much easier

Whopee, knew it had to be something siiiimmmmplllleeeee.

Checked all major bits and fuses, battery etc...no find...off comes all the plastic and start manipulating all the wires(wobbling them) trying to find a break in a cable....THEN...a light comes on, pull the nearest plug apart which supplies power to the ignition switch, and the wire to a minute flat fitting pushed into a plug had become (unsoldered) apart.. New 5 cent bit, minute bit of solder and whoopee, the big red bike is on again, possibly for another 170,000 klms.....Only catch was 2 hours work by the bike mechanic but worth every cent (it wasnt a modem or computer)...

Poblem caused me to purchase a second bike to run around on (a 2008 Honda Varadero) in the meantime whilst my TRUE LOVE was having a rest with the bike mechanic.  Don't let anyone confuse you, with only 2 cylinders it is just agricultural, back on the fanmtastic smooth ST, what could be better... Thanks for the advice..Hope this helps someone in the futurs as their bikes get older with higher mileages.

Any idea of the cause?  Is the cable under tension with the bars full one way or the other?

Very glad it turned out to be simple- but annoying regardless.
Even two cylinder Hondas are good.  Heck even Postie bikes are good, and two would be a luxury for them!
