I'm still at the point and shoot stage then hope for the best, take a hundred pics to pull a couple of good one's and if we are lucky a memorable shot.

I just use me phone camera. The technology has come a long way and it saves having to carry both a camera and phone :thumb I still get some great shots :wink1

I think the secret is just remembering to take lots of photos  :grin

I prefer to use a decent digital camera, one with a view finder so I can see what I'm taking but it means stopping and getting the camera out of the top case. I do have a smaller camera but it's hard to see what your taking with the display on the back but I can carry it my pocket. I still need to stop, but I don't have to get off the bike.

I've tried taking pictures with the phone but the quality was never there so I gave it up. Our galaxy tab takes good photos but again, needs to go in the top case.

Regardless of what ever you use, you have to remember to take them in the first place.

It's a tough discipline stopping and taking photos.  Getting the camera out is only half the battle- even finding a suitable parking spot is a challenge on a heavy bike.  With a car you just pull off the road almost anywhere.  With a bike you spend time making sure it won't fall over or get sideswiped.  That's before raising the visor, removing the sunglasses, removing the gloves  etc.  Then digging out the camera!
Diesel has a simple system for a basic digital point and click that avoids all the above hassle.  He wears it on a lanyard and shoots on the fly.

Modern digital cameras are brilliant and take care of exposure and focus without any drama, digital film is cheap and you get instant feedback on how you photo looks.     Here's three simple tips which will make for better photos.

1.  Fill the frame with what you want to photograph
2.  Compose your photo using the "rule of thirds"    http://www.ultimate-photo-tips.com/photography-rule-of-thirds.html (http://www.ultimate-photo-tips.com/photography-rule-of-thirds.html)
3.  Landscapes and other wide shots need to include some foreground, middleground and background to be effective and give the image some depth and impact.

An excellent summary, worthy of "framing".  I especially like #3.

Every time you get someone to take your photo they stand back, locate the head(s) in the dead centre and click.  At least you can rejig it with cropping if the definition is nice and high, like 8 mpix or better.  That's if they gave the camera time to focus.

Thanks, all that photography training that I did in my past life was not time wasted   :thumbsup

This idea of Diesels we tried on our Middelton ride and continue to do so now, until I got my self sorted with the camera's controls with a gloved hand I had some great close up shots of my glove, Chris's helmet, and a particularly dark video of the camera spending half an hour under my shirt and jacket in a storm.

We scrap about 80% of our moving shots, but some of the keepers are great.

I tend to get handed the camera from Heather so I can do close up shots of plants that Heather likes. Some shots work, some don't. Two years ago I did some fruit picking for a couple months and these two subjects came up near where I was camped.

One is a Golden Orb Spider, the other a spiders web taken on a foggy morning taken with my Fujifilm digital cam

The following tip always works for me, but as usual, never in the right place at the right time.

If you have the time to hang around in one place for the better shots, then it's about "lighting".

Morning and afternoon lighting always (to me) gives the better results, it's a warmer light and not a harsh midday light.

That doesn't mean every shot has to be a sunrise or sunset. Usually the best shot is sometimes behind you. Recently we were in Europe for 3 weeks and I was constantly looking where I'd been.....and there was a shot!

I have a Nikon D7100 with all the bells and whistle, some of the best shots I have in Austria (of scenery), were taken on a $300 point and shoot, in a bus, thru glass travelling at 100kph.....go figure.

So really it doesn't come down to the camera to take a "good" shot. So don't flick the Point & Shoot.

As others have said Composition............... and don't forget.............Lighting. :thumb

Lighting, Location and Lots of Patience.

I'm also a shoot on the fly sorta person but when the mood is right I will sit for hours to get the right shot.

This is one of my most recent favourites.

The first photo I took after buying my wide angle lens:                                                                                    And another one I took a while ago that I like:

(http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww323/Tack9204/Photography/IMG_0625.jpg) (http://s732.photobucket.com/user/Tack9204/media/Photography/IMG_0625.jpg.html)          (http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww323/Tack9204/Photography/IMG_0894.jpg) (http://s732.photobucket.com/user/Tack9204/media/Photography/IMG_0894.jpg.html)

I'll raise you one Sgt.  This is my desktop at the moment:

(http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww323/Tack9204/Photography/IMG_3520.jpg) (http://s732.photobucket.com/user/Tack9204/media/Photography/IMG_3520.jpg.html)

My favourite subjects are the real reason I take up a lens:

(http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww323/Tack9204/Photography/IMG_8597.jpg) (http://s732.photobucket.com/user/Tack9204/media/Photography/IMG_8597.jpg.html)          (http://i732.photobucket.com/albums/ww323/Tack9204/Photography/IMG_3798.jpg) (http://s732.photobucket.com/user/Tack9204/media/Photography/IMG_3798.jpg.html)

Yes it went to the boundary.  The one of my daughter (she's on the right) is at the Cowboys stadium with a 500mm zoom from half a footy field away freehand, so I apologise for the clarity.

Here's an example of a Landscape, composed using the "Rule of Thirds" and also with Foreground, Middleground and Background.  The photo has great depth and impact.   The scene is from the top of Mount Carnarvon in the Flinders Ranges, looking north.

Evenin' All...

So with this in mind...

...now the only way this can be improved is by replicating that first Chikko Roll pic don't ya's think?

So (again), with this in mind (and as it seems you lot aren't bad at this photo lark), have any of ya's got any 18 to 20 yo scantly clad  >:() daughters, grand daughters who could value add to this subject matter then?  :whistle

Just a thought then I guess...eh  :-(((
