Title: Great news!
Post by: Kev Murphy on November 04, 2019, 01:27:25 PM
Todays flash news!  Best birthday gift ever!

I went to check on progress on my bike repairs this morning.

My bike is not there?  Then my neighbour, who lives in Melbourne, dropped in. He visits Portland every couple of weeks, and has been spending his time at the bike shop, hands on, repairing, and re-assembling my bike.
He said that this is 'payback' for me looking after his house, collecting mail and putting out his trash for the past few years.
My bike is now in his garage next door to my flat. He has repainted, repaired the smashed pannier, and fitted all the plastics himself!  :thumbs

He informed me that the only thing missing is the left hand mirror, and then the bike is ready for roadworthy as soon as he fits it.

The only costs for me are the roadworthy, and rego fees, Darren has taken responsibility for all other costs!

Now, hows THAT for a mate?  :hatwave

I tried to reason with Darren over the costs, and he came back with...
"When I bought this home as a 'fixer upper', you rewired it as necessary, at no cost (labour only, I did it on weekends)
Then when the shed was built, you wired it as well, and when you retired, you supplied me with all those power tools (I had duplicates of drills, angle grinders, bench grinders, cutters, hand tools etc that I no longer required) Then there were the fishing rods, reels, etc which you donated. Each time I came up to Portland, there was something new added, like the solar security lights in the backyard, the lawn had been mowed, and so on.
As I came into some money recently, this is my way of repaying you for your friendship."

So Kev, I take it that a left hand mirror needs to be sourced?

Come on fellas, somebody has one they don't need, I'll pay postage to Portland VIC.

:runyay Just had a phonecall from Darren. He said the bike will be completed this weekend, and to book it in for a roadworthy test and rego next Monday!

Bike has been fully serviced and tuned by the mechanic who will sign the roadworthy test, just waiting for the newly repaired and painted indicator/side shroud and mirror to be fitted on Friday.  :hatwave

Seems I am only missing two minor small pieces of grey plastic, one being the right hand fairing pocket lid, (the lockable one) and the other being the left hand cowl for the 'tipover' bar.

Been a great day! (apart from light misty rain for the whole trip)
Bike needed a good  run to get the cobwebs out.

So excited to be on two wheels again, I left my camera behind. Left home at 7.20am, heading for Mt Gambier. Not much traffic, so it was enjoyable. Got the wet gear out of the pannier about 15 minutes after leaving home. Discovered that the hand warmer grips are not working, will look at that later.

Had a hot coffee and a short break at Naracoorte servo at 10am, still light misty rain, but not a problem. This is when I realised I had left my camera at home.
Decided to ride through Frances to Goroke, Natimuk and Horsham, about another two hour run, Stopped for 15 minutes at side of road because of a heavy shower, arrived Horsham at 12.25. Short break at Maccas for a burger and another coffee, as it was a tad chilly on the road. Still warmer than Portland, tho..

Pointed the bike south to Cavendish to pass the Grampians on my left, was not keen to go through Halls Gap with the wet roads and arrived Hamilton at 2.05pm. Last leg back to Portland and arrived back home again at 3.15pm.

Bike had a minor miss when I left home, had to use the choke. Never had this problem before, but the problem went away within about 15 minutes. Otherwise it was a faultless run. No more cobwebs!

586 km, and 6 hours 37 minutes by google. With stops for coffee and burgers, this stretched to 7 hours and 55 minutes. A good casual cruise for the day.  :runyay :thumbsup

Spent yesterday tracing a minor electrical fault, the 12 volt ciggy sockets for the camera and GPS were not working.
Earth wire was crushed against frame, and had separated. Replaced, and thought my woes were over, until I discovered this morning that the heated grips are not working. They were fine on Thursday?
Will have to strip plastics to trace the fault. Might leave it for a couple weeks until my LED light bar arrives, and kill two birds with one stone as I fit the lights. Will see if there is room to fit this under the headlight above the mudguard. The light unit is 10 inches long, rated at 30 watt with side spread and has a spot range of around 70 metres.

I was thinking about it, but decided I need some more short bursts before I get serious again.

Also, the pocket is a bit thin this week, I need a new helmet to replace the wrecked one, as the old full face helmet that I am currently using is a bit tight on the cheeks after a couple of hours. Am buying a new silver one next pension.

Post by: Kev Murphy on November 18, 2019, 09:51:44 AM
The friend who loaned me the car for the last couple of years came and picked it up last night, so I am now committed two just two wheels again. Am gaining confidence in traffic via daily rides with short bursts on the local highways, but still wary of other drivers.
This has been the longest period that I have not had access to a bike, since I was 14 years old.
Had some minor teething problems with the top box lock yesterday, but have sorted that out.
My new silver helmet and the driving light bar arrive Friday and will be fitted next weekend, ready for the strawberry run to Malmsbury RTE.
Am cruising locally again today to increase my smileage, the skies are dry and blue with some sunshine, and it has reached 16 degrees with a top of 19 expected.

HMMM.... 8 days back on the road, and 1300 Km travelled, altho around 600 Km was one trip.

By the time Malmsbury RTE is over, I will need another service!  :grin

I know, I know... this is buggerall distance really, and pales in comparison to mileage covered by Nation Meet attendees, but I have had my bum glued to a chair at home for the past two and a half years, so I am over the moon at the freedom of the moment. :runyay

Took an hours highway ride today, seeing as it was great weather (read HOT! - 39 degrees in Portland?)

On checking the GPS a few minutes ago, I noticed a big 'oops!' (The road was clear, no traffic, and it was downhill...and only a 30 second burst) :eek

In between chasing spots, shopping, and otherwise fiddle farting around today, I have managed to fit my new driving light. Not yet wired, will do that when its a little warmer.

Be aware Kev, the wheel may hit that on a decent bump

I don't do decent bumps Brock  :grin  Looking at suspension travel wear, I still have about 35 mm clearance

I braved the cold and wet conditions outside this morning for the first day of summer?, and have connected the LED driving light strip.
Will take pics after dark tonight to see effect. May have to tilt the light just a tad, hard to tell in daylight.
Have not yet wired the rear facing camera, but the front one is operational.
Put all the plastics back on the bike, and now discovered that the heated grips are not working again. BUGGABUGGABUGGA! :||||
Maybe tomorrow will be better weather to check that out?
Have packed a backpack with necessary items for next weekend RTE, as the panniers and top box will be loaded with strawberries.

Let there be light! Doesn't show real well with wet road.

Paul, it's a pity that there is no heat to match the intensity of the light, otherwise we could have fresh fried emoo drumsticks!

Still cold wet and miserable here... have not yet been able to work on the handgrip heaters, and RTE is just 3 sleeps away!

It's looking like the weather may be reasonably good on the weekend, Kev!
Hopefully you won't need the hand grip heaters... :thumbs

I will, to leave home Russ. It's cold enough here to freeze the nuts off a tractor.

Still cold and breezy outside, but rain ceased, so I spent 90 minutes outside stripping plastics and found the wiring problem. Just a faulty plug/socket that one connector had come adrift. All fixed now. Ready to roll on Saturday morning. :thumbs

Picked up my new RJAYS flip face helmet today, a silver one to sort of match the bike.  :thumb
