Title: Fun & Games...
Post by: ruSTynutz on February 15, 2024, 08:55:27 AM
We're just one of thousands impacted by the storm and the loss of power since Tuesday. While some towns have had power restored, at this stage Ausnet are saying we might get it back Saturday.

As bad as the loss of power is, the lack of phone service was even worse... thankfully that has been restored, although it seems to be hit and miss as to whether you can make a call or not.

Luckily we've been able to cook basic meals using a little gas camping stove and we've been able to charge phones using a solar powered charging bank.

We haven't been able to refuel the cars as the local servo is shut due to no power. Apparently the next nearest town has a petrol station open but there are queues lined up for hundreds of metres.

Oh well, as bad as it is, it could be a lot worse, at least we're not having to deal with fires or floods!

Cheers  :beer

Thanks JD, probably our only concern is the food in our freezers. I suspect the meat etc will be starting to thaw very soon... Thankfully a friend in Inverloch has offered some space in their freezer so we're about to take the expensive stuff down there this arvo...
Cheers  :thumbs

When we lost power for three days a couple of years ago, I ended up cooking all the meat we had, and re-freezing it. We're still using the pasta sauce made with all the mince, and the couple of roasts got cut into smaller bits to thaw for sandwiches etc. I have a gas stove, so that makes it a lot easier.

Back at the end of 2022 we suffered an intense tornado like storm that lasted about 10 minutes.   Trees down everywhere, lots of damage, roads blocked, and power out for several days.    We moved food into the caravan fridge (runs on gas), and also cooked in the van using gas.   Our evenings were spent in quiet candlelight with no TV and it was almost disappointing when to power came back on.

Thanks for replies... :thumbs

I think the worse part of it all was the lack of phone service & internet.
It's a horrible feeling when you have absolutely no way to contact family knowing my sister-in-law's partner had had a heart attack and was in hospital awaiting triple bypass surgery.

Oh, one thing I did notice, with all the power outages around our area I didn't see any EVs out on the road...  :whistle

My cousin in the Dandenongs hooked up his EV to power his freezer.

That's good to hear!
I may have to go out and buy an EV now... :grin

What sort of range does his freezer have?
