Old War Planes

Not sure if there are any rules about this Wot thuh, but I'm riding from Orange down to Temora on Sat to go to a showcase day at the Temora Aviation Museum.

If anyone is interested in old warplanes, then this is a great day :thumb.

The theme for the day is Pearl Harbour, with a Spitfire, Ryan, Tiger Moth, P-40 Kittyhawk being displayed and flown. The Spitfire has only just been returned to the air after a rebuild of the Merlin in the US. Also, HARS from the Illawarra will be bringing their Catalina up for a demo, so I can't wait for that!

Gates open at 10, and admission is $20 for adults, $18 for over 65's and $10 for kids under 18.

I'll be getting there at 10, so if anyone wants to meet up on the way or there (Orange, Cowra, Young), let me know.

Maybe this should be moved to "Other Upcoming Rides" as it's not really as OZTOC event, just me going for a ride. Moderators?

No rule against planes, quite a few of us have aviation back grounds. (22 yrs RAAF Electrical/avionics). Love the sound of a Merlin under power

 I think a multi row radial under full boost sound better, but a merlin or allision with 25" being pushed into it would be ok.

It is a very good Aviation Museum at Tomora.
I dropped in for a look a few years ago and was impressed
The planes are in very good condition & I think nearly all flyable
at any time.

I like the sound of them all! I will have to admit though, at Warbirds last year, the Sea Fury with it's multi-row Bristol Centaurus was my pick as the best sound. Beside the Sabre, which didn't fall out of the sky as I remember as a kid from Newcastle  >:(). Oh, and the Connie. I often hear on old Warbird flying over on the way down or back from Temora, and they all definately have a sound of their own. :-++

I would have loved to go, but I already have two events on..what planning  :||||  have to plan around another fly day.

Planning to stop in at Temora on way home from Nat rally. They fly something first and third sundays of every month. Won't be flying when I get there but will still be good to look around.
The super Connie (constellation) was kept here in Tamworth for a while a few years ago, and although I never went for a flight in it it did sound good crusing around over town.

It actually wouldn't be a bad place for a trip, as they cater for groups pretty well. They had a Ferrari club there earlier in the year when I was there last, so maybe a future trip, if not a day, a weekend get-together?

If I hadn't realised that the Barry Sheene challenge is on the same weekend, then it would have been a simpler choice. Arrrrg!  :crazy :crazy :CB--
Middleton is still top of my list, pending work commitments and the possibility of time off. There really is just too much to do in the time we've got! Mind you, the Phillip Island Classic is on in Jan, WSBK in Feb, so maybe a more relaxed weekend in Mar is the best way to go,

I'd be in that, for sure. They're slightly bigger than what I used to fly (ultralights), but anything with wings is great, even the ones with the wings that go round n round

Hey Atoyot,

Read this thread last week and thought I would meet you at Nubba(?) just 40kms from Temora. Went test riding yesterday to change my riding technique at stops. Am using mainly rear brake now and since brakes are linked and a small amount of front brake is happening anyway, the stops are much smoother now.

Still needs a bleed tho and am working on a document that can help anyone with their 1300 bleeds.

Anyway, looking at your thread again yesterday I saw you said Sat not Sun. Whoops. No harm done.

Going for a ride up to the Southern Highlands today instead but the winds are a-blowin and Terese is not a 'fan' of the breeze. The battle to keep ST.George as a permanent member of this household is not won yet!

Funny you should mention that.
I was sitting in class at Newcastle Boys' High when that one went in just east of the railway tracks.
It almost hit our Deputy Head ('TOC's) house!
I always think of that when I see a Sabre or the MIG rip-off.
I remember riding the bike down to see the site.
I wonder whether he ran out of fuel on his way back to Williamtown.

Hi Biggles, the official report was engine trouble after coming out of a cloud at 7500 ft. I was only 4 at the time, and I can't remember it, but I can remember reading about it a few years later. Only the pilot was killed, one civilian injured in the chest, and a further 2 suffering from shock.

We occasionally heard of them crashing into the sea off Stockton, at Williamstown, or on Stockton beach, and it's interesting looking through the serial number records of all the CAC Sabres to see what fate they met. I can remember the Sabres being replaced with the Mirages, and depending on which Squadron it was, F111's or later F/A-18's.
