I have called metalgear, the GIRL is talking to her manager and will call back?? :whistle :well
I have a question? "are front pads different in thickness than the rear??
:|||| :|||| :blu13left

According to metal gear the pads are the same front and rear for up to year 2007. http://metalgear.com.au/view_model_details.php?model_id=4256 (http://metalgear.com.au/view_model_details.php?model_id=4256)
From 2008 the front pads change and the rear stays the same. http://metalgear.com.au/view_model_details.php?model_id=11392 (http://metalgear.com.au/view_model_details.php?model_id=11392)
The 1300 front pads carried over from the 1100A but the 1100 has a thicker rear pad http://metalgear.com.au/view_model_details.php?model_id=4253 (http://metalgear.com.au/view_model_details.php?model_id=4253)
I checked Partzilla and I find the 1300 rear has a different part number to the front so quite likely the rear also is supposed to have a thicker pad as well.
It's quite possible the 1100 and early 1300 OEM pads are identical but made by a different part supplier hence the part number change (common practice).
Even with the front pad in the rear it shouldn't wear that quick

:think1 My thoughts exactly, no more metalgear for Me :||||

I had the same problem on my VN900 pads went to bare metal and scored my disc after 1500Ks metalgear tried to get out of honoring the warranty so now I don't deal with them I'd rather pay a bit more and get quality.

Lots of us use Metalgear with no problems at all.
You need to check your brake system out especially check for rear brake drag. Check that the rear calliper is not over heating. Try it after a short ride with few brake applications or put her up on the centre stand and rotate the rear wheel, it should spin fairly easily.
Mine was running around 50 degrees hotter then the front, had to overhaul the calliper.

Well problem solved after visiting metalgear, brendale, the owner gave me 2 bigger sizes to try, free of charge just bring back the ones that I don't use. And free replacement of the right ones. THANKS metalgear. Will change tomorrow after checking caliper :like :like

My pads were put on by my local bike mechanic so everything was checked before I picked up the bike when he looked at the backing plates after the 1500Ks he said it looked like the pad material hadn't been adhered to the backing plate properly and had fallen off.
-
Thanks will check that also and put up some pics

STranger has been using 'METALGEAR' pads for the laST 8 1/2 yrs with out issue I checked the pads juST yeSTerday and there is appx 50% on them and I truST they should laST the trip to Perth and home. :thumb

I too have been using metal gear for years on the 1100.
On the (2002/03) bike, the front pads are much thinner than the rear, however the front pads do fit in the rear brakes.
-
Yes, Mr Brock they gave me 2 different sizes to try, will send pics tomorrow in case anyone wants to try them

:blu13 Thanks Allan, spoke to the owner at Brendale metalgear, he said try these 2 different sizes, keep the best fit and return the others, there is a little confusion, because there specs on their site give the very thin pads, whereas these 2 will fit if the is no backing plate (which mine doesn't have) :law So tomorrow will do it all again and see which is best :thumbs :thumbsup :blu13left

Until my last pad change all but one set were OEM and on the last change over I went to ceramic pads see here http://ozstoc.com/index.php?topic=7599.msg87290#msg87290 (http://ozstoc.com/index.php?topic=7599.msg87290#msg87290)
The OEM pads used the backing plate but with the aftermarket ones I left them out; maybe pads were a little thicker - no issue with them since fitting 21,000 km ago.

While the wheel was off yesterday for the angled valve stem drama we noted the front pads were nearing their wear limit.
Today I looked up the part number for Metalgear front pads (30-190-S) (where "S" = sintered) and noted they come with a 0.7mm shim. On previous fitments I found that the pads wouldn't fit with the shim and removed it. Today I saw a note that if the shim wasn't required, use 30-374-S. So I've now got two sets of them to fit tomorrow. And it gets better!! :grin :thumbs
The front sintered shimmed ones are $39.95 per set. The shimless ones are $34.50. Buy two comes to $69.00. Deduct the OZSTOC discount and I'm "go" (or is that "stop"?) for $62.10. It's 4.5km from my place to their Brendale warehouse so I got a little ride in as well. Lots of wins in that lot! :runyay
I have a bunch of rear pads in the shed so tomorrow Ruby 2sday puts on a few grams of brake pad.
-
I'm looking at fitting a new set of rear brake pads and was considering Metal Gear...
Unfortunately the Metal Gear 30-145-S Sintered pads aren't available and with no ETA for new stock was wondering if anyone has tried their organic pads...
They just happen to be at a bargain price at the moment but I don't really want to go to the effort of fitting a set and then find they don't last long or can't cope with hauling up the not inconsiderable weight of the ST plus me and the pillion in a million!
Any thoughts or suggestions appreciated... :thumbs
*Edit: Damn, the organic pads are sold out too...doh! :||||
-
The organic are still a great pad...
-
Thanks Brock! :thumbs
-
I no longer use brake pads, I just use my boot onto the rear tyre!
-
Just an update...
Seems there are different pads for the ST1300 now...which may explain why they had none of the 30-145-S 's...
I'd contacted another mob (after having no luck with the Metal Gear website) that sells Metal Gear brake pads (bikemate.com.au)
only for them to say they had none of the 30-145-S's either. But, they did email me later this arvo to let me know that they had
contacted Metal Gear and that they have now sorted the problem.
Anyways, the new part numbers are: Front & Rear - 30-057-S $47.90 inc GST.
or
You can have the next generation pads: Front & Rear - 30-057-S2 $39.90 inc GST.

I've decided to go for the next gen pads (front & rear) so it will be interesting to see what they are like... :thumbs :popcorn
-
:popcorn. I hope you will let us know how they go
-
I certainly will, Richo! :thumbs
-
Oh, I forgot to mention earlier, I tried the OzStoc discount code but no joy... :Wot thuh:
-
:popcorn :popcorn :popcorn
-
I must say I was impressed with the speed I received the brake pads, they turned up yesterday!
I did pay the extra to get them sent express but still... :eek :runyay
-
Well, I just fitted the rear pads...
No issue other than a bit of fiddling around to get the pistons pushed in enough to get the new pads in. :thumbs
-
Front brake pads fitted... :thumbs
Now, hopefully I'll get my bike all back together this week and then get to try these pads out.
To be continued...
-
Okay, I got my ST back together tonight so I then went for a 10-15 minute ride just to see how things were.
All good so far....
The brakes felt good although I only applied them fairly gently as they are still bedding in.
I'll probably go for a proper ride tomorrow... :13Candy
