Ever left that essential but rarely needed item at home when touring, we have :|||| :||||
So I would like to commence this post with the view of establishing a Touring and Travel essential checklist that we can collate into a simple single page document that can be printed off to allow a member to tick off those essential travel items :whistle
So if everyone could add even just one (more if you like) SERIOUS item to the list below to allow me to collate the checklist and make it accessible for all, I will aim for completion just prior to National Rally 2014
Thanks for your thoughts :think1
Pockey :grin

If coming from W.A., a copy of rego papers since we don't have rego disks over here.
-
sun screen and ear plugs.
Vic weather may get hot due to ozone depletion and we will all need to hear the pre=prepared speaches.
-
spare eye glasses (if you wear them)
-
On a very long ride - a spare key - kept separate from the primary one in use. If you're riding in a group - swap the spares amongst your companions. Otherwise it might take a while for the spare to be mailed to you, or you might be waiting for an unimpressed spouse to deliver it to you personally.
-
Emergency contact details
Phone number of my Honda service dealer back home
Paper maps, as well as my GPS
Head Torch
-
Tyre repair options.....

Not a good idea to keep them with the bike especially if it gets stolen. Plus police nation wide know your rego details from the plate number before they stop you.
What I can up with is "generally it's something you haven't needed on previous trips and you leave it home""
But loo paper or baby wipes (better) come to mind.....Sorry girls but there times when you simply have to go and the nearest loo is 50 kms away.
Insect repellent........though the last time I used it the flies weren't told that it was supposed to repel them instead of nearly carrying me away.
Hair Brush........There's one in the bike at all times so Heather can do her hair after taking helmet off.
Pens.........I keep one in the bike for mileage details on fuel docket.
Cig lighter/matches......if you need a camp fire.
-
Water to drink. at least 1 litre.
-
First Aid kit.
-
A laminated card with 3 emergency family/friends contact numbers and address in your wallet/purse.
This does assist Emergency Services, when or if, the situation arises.
Mobile phones can be damage/lost/flat battery etc when when involved in an accident/incident.
My late brother always carried a laminated card and I got that call you dont want last year.
-
Wets.....
Torch....
RAN Number....
:beer

I stuff all of my clothing in a small sleeping bag "compression bag" and crank the bag up tight to reduce volume. I also use this bag as my pillow.
-
tape or wire a spare key somewhere under the fairing or some place
-
Multitool......
-
:think1 :think1 Chocks to stop Abes bike falling over and side air bags to protect Pockey :wink1 :grin :Stirpot
-
Goes without saying Well stocked Tool Kit I tend to use multitools. No where near as good as a regular tool, but heaps better at reducing space and weight.
Also Duct Tape and a small can of WD40 which can be used to light fires in wet conditions.
A.

Matchless fire lighter kit. I will post pic later. And 10cent coin to open the tin.
Has flint, striker tinder and hexamine tablet to get the fire started. I happen to have about 20 in a big bag if any WA ites want one, I could send some East by pony express if some is going that way with a bit of spare room..

Yes that skinny brown thing is what you think it might be. Closely packed cotton the expands and burns pretty well.
-
Cable ties
Insulation Tape
-
Reliable tyre pressure gauge.
Ya can't trust the Servos' gauges.
-
Hey Brock. Those fire starters won't work any more.
They're time-ex! :grin
-
Oh yes they do, Son just tested one, now I gota go put out the back yard.....
:||||
Well not really.
Never did work out how a flint and steel got timex, I think its just a good way to sell more..
-
I suspect the hexamine tablet might slowly vaporise, losing its flammability, even though it might be sealed. That's the only explanation I can come up with.
-
Visor and Windscreen cleaner
-
The first thing I pack on any ride these days is a camera of some sort, be it an in phone camera or a separate camera. Why? Just in case I am involved in some sort of incident/accident and I want photographic evidence of damage to my vehicle, damage to other vehicle, road conditions, photo's of anything that might support my stance in future proceedings of any nature. Don't under estimate the importance of obtaining timely evidence.
Not being negative, just saying be prepared.
-
Thanks for your ideas guys, keep them coming :thumbsup
-
Summer/Winter gloves look at your route of travel and the climates and seasons to be encountered....to pack appropriate clothing.
:beer
-
So anymore ideas to be added so I can put this resource list together in the near future ?
Pockey :wink1

Bottle/can/cork screw tool. Can be used for many other things. Multitool might do all of this. A roll of racing tape can fix up things that might break (eg roo strike or dropping the bike). Spare flexible straps as you can fix things, use for camping or help someone who has to attach things to their bike after a misshap. A roll of toilet paper is handy for all sorts of uses, such as visor cleaning and for when supplies run out at roadside stops. Cable ties etc have alreday been mentioned.
Oh, and a stunning pillion :)

And I don't even have to remember to pack her.......she is always first to the bike :grin
Test Light or even a small multimeter
-
I like to travel with my "loo kit". It is a zip-lock bag with a butt - roll (as in a part roll - smaller than a full roll) of soft toilet paper, a folding shovel (which doubles as a small mattock) and a small bottle of sanitizing goo. Has served me well for many years. I think I got the shovel from a camping store.

Gees with all that stuff on your bikes how do you fit on????

Gees with all that stuff on your bikes how do you fit on????
Easy! Clothes, toiletries, torches, chargers etc, first aid, spare gloves and waterproofs in left pannier. Tent & spare shoes in right pannier, self inflator and sleeping bag and kermit chair across the back seat in a waterproof roll top bag. Maps, food, cooker, water and "other stuff" in the top box. Like most of us, my packing has been refined and reduced over a few long trips. It all fits easily and there's plenty of room to spare :thumb

Touring two up, I get one pannier and Chris gets the other one, and we usually stay in cheap hard accommodation. Top box is for general stuff, drinking water, lunch and a compact cooker for a cuppa on the road.

We weather gear, spare set of gloves

In your wallet with your details please note any drug allergies or adverse reactions . It will help the emergency services should you be unfortunate enough to require their aid. An adverse reaction to morphine which is a first line pain killer can be either very detrimental or even fatal.

In case it hasn't already been mentioned, Eye Drops.
This piece of wisdom from Wombattle, after I got a acidic bug in the eye.
