The calculation is simple.

Current (Amps) = Power / 12 (nominal voltage). So a 55 Watt lamp will draw approx 5 Amps. (4.6). I tend to use guesstimation to give rough figures, erroring on the high side. So 55 is approx 60 (easily divided by 12 giving 5 A.

I have been known to use this on-line calculator at work on more than one occasion, it's very good!
