Stopped at servo in Stirling to refuel on the way to work.

Finished refuelling and took off helmet to enter store. The guy behind the counter asked if I had a mask so I put helmet back on.
.
Problem solvered. Both he and the guy he was serving laughed.

I never remove my helmet while refueling, even before covid.....and since covid kicked in and wearing a mask has been a requirement I just leave my flip up helmet closed with the visor open. No-one has complained as yet... :grin
Mind you, I mostly refuel at the local servo so they may recognise my bike...

I never do when refuelling, but take it off when I go inside to pay.

I always take my helmet off before I start refueling but have never refueled with a mask on yet even in the car

I always take my helmet off as it gives me a break without it and saves any potential issues.
Mind you with everyone walking in with masks that is more of an issue with identity these days.

Apparently us scumbag bikies are more likely to rob servos than all these idiots wearing hoodies etc over their heads as they are free to wander in without being required to remove them...lol.

If I recall , over the years its always been more of a courtesy to remove the headgear. Covids a bit different with the mandatory mask!
I take mine off so my head can spring back to it`s normal size.
My benefit more than anything else, but everybody is happy. 2c worth> Wot thuh

Not allowed to wear my helmet into the bank, but can walk in with a beanie, sunglasses and a mask on and that's ok? :whistle

If servos insist on the removal of helmets it would be nice if there was actually somewhere to leave it while you go pay.
I know some will leave it sitting on the seat but that's just asking for it to be blown off by a gust of wind.
With helmets costing an arm and a leg there's no way I'm gonna risk it.

I know it doesn't help everyone but I put mine over the left handgrip with my Spot mounted. it fits there well. I have put it on the ground or on a spot near the pump on a horizontal surface which ou can sometimes find. I don't know if anyone insists on it I just do it for the break.

If your helmet cant survive a fall from a seat without damage, it has no place being on a head.. I once saw that written in a magazine, attributed to an engineer in a helmet manufacturer... I tend to believe that.
I have seen a russian on you tube trying to break a brand name helmet with a sledge hammer, it was banged up but not split. (took a small explosive to do that) Chinese knock off didnt fare so well.

I carry it in with me which was convenient yesterday, but like you say there's nowhere to put it whilst refuelling so it stays on my head for that part of the transaction.

Here's a link to an experiment I did with an old, but quality helmet. I'm satisfied that a fall from a seat will only do cosmetic damage, but a scratch to a visor is an expensove replacement.

I now always take my helmet off before refuelling.
There are 2 reasons.
1. My local shell servo, where I know the attendant well and who also rides daily, wouldn't unlock the pump until the helmet is off.
2. For a while (18 months), My son-in-law worked as a servo attendant, and was held up at gun point several times by people wearing motorcycle helmets.
Attendants get PTSD from this, so I don't want to do anything to traumatise them further.
Helmet off allows security cameras to see your face.

Yes, worthwhile looking after to avoid any damage. When going into the servo to pay, I will usually wedge my $140 helmet between the handle bars and tank bag. Which brings me to, does a $1,400 helmet offer better protection than a $140 helmet?

That $1400 does include my intercom system, Michael...so it's roughly a thousand for the helmet on it's own.
As to your question, as all the helmets are required to pass the appropriate standards one would assume they would all offer similar protection.
I believe the extra dollars are paying for the extra comfort, better aerodynamics and more exotic construction materials and probably much bigger profits...lol.
I think cheaper helmets are more likely to be constructed from polycarbonate while the more expensive ones tend to be made from fibreglass, carbon fibre and aramid.
I haven't been a fan of polycarbonate helmets ever since a salesman showed me how well they bounce on concrete! :eek
I know he was probably doing that to sell me a more expensive helmet at the time but ever since I can't get the image of that cheap helmet bouncing and thinking that would be doing the same thing in an accident but with my head inside it...lol.
